F5: Reams F5??

Another possibility for delaying the big reveal:

Could it be that when Reams says he's holding off sharing his hack because he wants to give Sony time to respond legally, that he may instead be waiting for a payoff to bury it? Very cynical thought, granted, but maybe he has alimony payments.

Can we safely assume that whatever this "hack" actually is would void any manufacturer warranty? With that, I dont know if rental houses would be able to stop their clients from doing it but I doubt they'd want them screwing with the camera's firmware(or whatever). Dennis, like you said previously, there is a strong chance Sony is going to block this "back door" in upcoming vers. update. If the update has solid features, one would have to decide which is more important to them. Rental houses would prob install so their cameras weren't messed with.

Features missing that I think are important are LUTs for regular custom mode (right now LUTs are only available in CineEI mode where matrix, detail, and internal NR is permanently disabled). LUT's don't work in S&Q mode either. Also the false color for the VF's only support slog2 right now not slog3 - but this could be a camera independent firmware anyways. There are lots of other things on the list that many others would think are more important than LUTs.

Alister and I also noticed some small gain shift when using LUTs in CineEI mode as you go up or down in ISO. It's minor but should not happen.

Also if there are any R5 glitches that need to be addressed via firmware (since R5's are updated with separate firmware) its very easy for Sony to make the R5 firmware dependent on a newer released of camera body firmware.

There are lots of ways to "address" it if Sony wants.

You're probably right.

There was something about this uprezzing business not too long ago either, but I forget what it was about...

If all the boards are the same except the sensor board, what's to stop you from installing an F55 sensor into an F5 and then installing the F55 firmware?

The fact that the F55 sensor board, as a part from Sony, is like $25K

[edit: sorry, $22,426.44]

And it's really only a upres from the full sensor's 3.4k to UHD at 3.8k, it's not like they're uprezzing from 1920x1080. Im sure it'll look just fine.

"When you have Roger Deakins, adored for his film work, shooting Skyfall and he is comfortable up-resing to 4K and showing on IMAX, I think it speaks for itself." - See more at: http://www.studiodaily.com/2012/09/roger-deakins-digital-odyssey-not-in-4k/#sthash.YbKDp2aL.dpuf

According to this diagram http://blog.abelcine.com/2014/08/26/arri-adds-prores-ultra-hd-recording-to-the-amira/ and info on "open gate" by ARRI http://www.arrimedia.com/news/view/48/alexa-xt-open-gate it appears that in 16:9 mode its 2880x1620 pixels but in "open gate" mode which uses more area on the sensor only then does it become 3440 x 2200 which also means your FOV and DOF is affected.

I only caught onto this after reading Nate's post to Andy @ Abelcine.

It's like opposite of crop mode. lol

EDIT: but does Alexa XT and Amira use same sensor?

Yep, it sure does. If Arri deliver with this camera it could be a killer. I do feel sorry for the Alexa Classic owner-operators. This Amira upgrade could make it bit harder to rent them.

"AMIRA features the same sensor and exceptional image quality as the ARRI ALEXA, recording superior HD 1080 or 2K pictures that are suitable for any distribution format. With a dynamic range of more than 14 stops, low noise levels, subtle highlight handling, natural color rendering, breathtaking skin tones and speeds of up to 200 fps, AMIRA will deliver beautiful, life-like images in any situation. Back to the F5 debacle. There is some article about in German posted on this site which questions if its a hoax, hack, or simply a PR stunt bfore IBC.

German: http://www.slashcam.de/news/single/Hack-oder-Hoax--Sony-PMW-F5-mit-interner-4K-XAVC-A-11572.html

Translated: https://translate.google.com/transl...erner-4K-XAVC-A-11572.html&edit-text=&act=url

That site never has any first-hand knowledge, but is an avid repeater/spreader of other peoples findings. They do their own tests though, once products are available.
And who would rule out a PR stunt these days anyway;)
I would also call the recent BlackMagicDesign "Summer Sale" a PR stunt, with Sony we will know soon at least;)

The podcast... which will include a link to the written instructions, will go live sometime today.

Until then... I still have to go to work!
