F5: Reams F5??

Wow... and not an official Sony upgrade either! Hope he spills the beans on how he did it!

I bet he accidentally installed the F55 firmware.

BTW, the service manual shows that all the hardware in the 5 and 55 is identical except for the sensor board. All the processing boards are the same.

Yes like 8k.

Uh, I doubt this very much :-)

Could be firmware. You think Sony would check for that, but it could be one particular version that skipped through the cracks.

Just firmware? But in Ream's pic his F5 has the black ND wheel with white writing like the F55. What's up with that?

The ND wheel was replaced by Sony later on as a fix to how easily it was to accidentally rotate it. It was originally silver, but the replacement is black.

Mine is still silver as I haven't put on the replacement yet that Sony sent me.

Another way is that he could have used an All File from a 55 with 4096x2160 XAVC specified as shooting mode in that file. The more I think about it, the more I think that's the most likely way. Whatever...speculation will be moot in short time.

The real interesting part is how Sony will respond. The news will keep the F5 viable through the onslaught of cheap 4K cameras. It will be a very interesting exercise in saving face.

(this also puts more pressure on Canon :-) Hope for their sake they started making their 4K processing chip 9 months ago!)

Alister and I were saying that...mainly because we knew 4K internal would mean the XAVC hardware codec chip had to be 4 times beefier in the 55 to do it. We figured the 55 had more hardware inside.

Seems the hardware XAVC chip was designed for 4K from the get-go.

well,
the fear turned into reality...;-)
i always thought they'd open it up at some point.
love my global shutter, but still a sour taste.

Yeah, I have to say the main reason I sprung for $12K extra was so I could get another year or 18 months out of the camera for simple 4K work in the imagined 2015-16-17 range. Global shutter and better color capabilities were a distant 2nd.

So yeah, I have a little of that "!?&$%! Sony" thing going through my head, but frankly, after the F3/SLog episode, I just sort of roll my eyes and accept that Sony will always be pulling shenanigans like this. Just part of Sony broadcast corporate culture. Segment your market, even artificially if you have to.

Mostly, I'm happy for my friends (I have two personal friends with F5s) who got their money's worth.
