F5: Reams F5??

But sonys promise has been to make obsolescence obsolete.

uh, I think you're misappropriating those words. That was Red.

Sony has never promised anything, other than publicly announcing firmware version names, features within various versions, and rough timetables for version releases.

A legal injunction can come at any time in the future, when "damages" are greater. I don't think a weekend to sit on things means anything.

If all this is true, Paul should have just made it anonymously available and never looked back.

So what are the options..?

1) He paid for the 55 upgrade and they didn't change the ring colour
this has been on his radar: SMM rating 7/10

2) He is running a Beta firmware
surely they would have given this to the usual suspects.. Chapman or Bloom: SMM rating 5/10

3) He uploaded F55 firmware.
Hmm.. he is not rich enough to maybe brick his camera SMM rating 4/10

4) He hacked something.
Im not aware of him having that skill-set 3/10

I gather it's got nothing to do with official Sony channels. He also stated it wasn't a 'trick' either. My guess is that he's tinkered around with some of the accessible files for the camera and found a simple '1'/'0' entry that he could change to allow access to the 4K recording.

I'm trying a few little experiments of my own, but no luck so far - time will tell at any rate!

"Aware"

You may have a full background in professionally writing C++ or Linux or SQL or hacking for the CIA for all I know - Im just not aware of that - maybe you do - I hope so - lets completely re-assign all the buttons, re-route headphone and get a waveform - wonderful!

AFAIK Magic Lantern took a team of crowd coding total open source uber-nerds months to write.. given the 'in' of the published Canon SDK - somethign I guess would not be matched by easily by a solo effort.

Of course it could be a 'simple' service menu hack that takes minor tinkering which of course any camera tech head could maybe fathom - maybe a tech background on sat trucks for example- like you do have?

I can't write Hello World in Basic :)

Difference between 5D with ML and this is that F5 and F55 are identical (or almost identical) when it comes to internal components. 5D was just how it was and idea was to reverse engineer, find technical posibilites and write software that could utilise them. Completely different story.

For similar reason Canon is very, very cautious when it comes to 1DC. They do not release firmware updates, you have to send camera to them. Why? Because it's software could be used to basically turn 1DX to 1DC. They're very similar (same?) when it comes to internals.

At this point it actually doesn't matter if he will say exactly how he has done it. We will find a way too. Just a little tip from him would help a lot, that's all we need.

Where you get that "F5 and F55 are identical (or almost identical)"? I really doubt that. I'm pretty sure internally they are quite different a bit like Red Epic and Scarlet.

Because that's how the hardware is developed, for production costs reasons. I'm almost sure Red Epic and Scarlet are extremely similar inside as well. I am not talking Dragon line with new sensor (but then Dragon Scarlet and Dragon Epic are similar as well).

You would be massively surprised if you would know how many hardware features are hidden on every single electronic device, but they are just not unleashed by the software (firmware).

He might have been reading my posts.

The service manual for the camera lays it all out. Only the sensor board is different between the two (and there is ONLY the sensor on that board). All the processing after is the same.

Now if someone could please hack (or whatever his method turns out to be in the end) the Canon C-Series... ;)
Sorry, don´t want to derail here, I´m happy for every Sony owner out there and hope that whatever this is, it'll stir things up a bit.
Looking at F5 footage and prices now...

Maybe the seller will change his mind and keep it ;) but here's a link to a seller of an F5 in NYC if anyone is interested. I have done business with him, I can vouch he is a good seller.

hey all,

i wonder what will happen to the 15.000 upgrade path... ;-)
one thing for sure, even if sony can ban this from becoming public some other wizkid genius will finally figure it out...
sony might've been better off giving 4k xavc via RAW recorder a chance.
anyway,

dear Sony: make if official for firmware V5,
but give me as early F55 adopter a free RAW Recorder!
or a free lenses!
or both!!!

haha... at least on can try.. ;-))

I still think Sony will circumvent it in a future major release. They don't strike me as the type of company to turn a blind eye. The consumer will be happy about it, but what about rental houses and retailers with F55 stock etc..

you might be able to hold off on any firmware upgrades if it turns out this "hack" will only ever work on the current release v4.11 and below... but how long will you be able to hold out. There is still a lot of features and fixes left to be done on the F5/55.

Anyway, when is the juice suppose to come out officially anyway?

Unfortunately for Sony they are teaching buyers (between this and the F3 key debacle) to not be an early adopter.

I just bought an AX100 (UHD) due to a hack for it.

Another Sony rumor or is this already proven and tested?
Maybe Sony just asked some boutique-agency for a viral strategy.
Hm, Sony, naaaaaaaaahhh, I go for coincidence.
