Re: World's First Electronic EF to NEX Adapter!

The point being that theres NEX and theres NEX fs100. Obviously a difference in signal code because what works on cameras like the NEX 5, 5n does not necessarily mean itworks for the FS100.

Also from what I've read people are requesting better iris control for the La-EA2 with the Fs100. With still no autofocus control.

http://www.shawnlam.ca/2011/sony-sal1650-on-nex-fs100/

Thats a sony adapter with a sony camera having issues so please lets stop with its easy and not complicated to get iris control.
The complaint people have about LA-EA1 has nothing to do with how difficult it is to have perfectly working aperture control. The adapter was purely designed for DSLR camera -- pre FS100. For the record, controlling aperture on FS100 with LA-EA1 works just fine. The minor complaints are in relations to specific style of shooting (i.e. changing aperture while rolling).

The Conurus adapter is simpler compared to the Birger's with auto focus, wireless follow focus, etc. And same goes for Sony's LA-EA2.

PaulCurtis comment: " As for EF vs EFS - the mount and electronics are the same"

I don't know if that means an adapter will fit both EF and EF-S lenses. I just got an EOS-NEX adapter, advertised for EF lenses, I assumed it would lock onto EF-S, but it doesn't. Only locks onto EF lenses.

EF and EF-S are exact same mount, same fit. The difference is on the lens. There's no such mount or camera that will take only EF-S lens.

I'm talking with them as well to become an early tester of the product as well, knowing there could be issues. I want to work with them to help flush out the use on the FS100. I think it's a great product. Right now I am waiting to see where and when I can get involved. I also understand the caveats involved. It's untested. It might have serious problems, it might have no problems. They've been GREAT to talk to about the adapter.

That's great to hear. I hope it work right out of the box. If not, I'm willing to use it as a dump adapter they work out the kinks.

BTW, are you cancelling/returning your MTF order? Just curious. :)

The MTF adapter will be available for my next shoot and I really need it so I will more than likely have both. I've talked with both and I'd really like to take the time with both to work through any issues before I write a review on them given they are so new and lens adapters can be very finicky. Right now, I really know nothing about either in terms of how well they work on the FS100. But, both companies have talking with me quite a bit. We'll just have to wait and see!

I confess we have not tested with FS100 yet. We will be able to get our hands on one in a week or two and I would actually suggest all of you to hold off but not place your orders until FS100 tests positive, just in case.

Manfred Poehlmann: the connector on the side is for the attachment of optional accessories in the future. It is not required for now and is left unconnected.

I'm willing to take the risk as i moved all my stills to the NEX system too. Depending on how long it takes to arrive i can perhaps help with some testing as well.

I wonder what kind of optional accessories you have in mind? The only area that seems to be missing is electronic control of focus - perhaps something in the pipeline for that? And electronic follow focus? (I am of course putting words in your mouth here and have no knowledge whatsoever)

Hey if this adapter, at this price, when installed on the FS100 will allow me to set aperture and runs IS on my EF lenses, then I'll get one. Waiting to hear that someone has tested this on an FS100.

Unfortunately I was not able to get into the first run, so the earliest I could test one might be sometime late February from what they are telling me. If this changes, I will let you know. Hopefully someone in the first batch will get their hands on an FS100 sooner to provide some feedback to them.

Electronic follow focus is in fact a possibility. We have not started any work on that yet, but we would openly solicit a partnership with another manufacturer to jointly develop and manufacture some external electronic follow-focus "box". (And then work on it in solititude! Customers may not like to hear this but engineering work makes the greatest progress when there is the right balance between uninterrupted concentration and just enough communication taking place albeit skewing heavily towards the former.)

That manufacturer has to be experienced, well-known for workmanship and trusted by cinematographers, of course.

Some cameras provide remote focus ability in camera, like the FS100 through the LANC port. Are the focus messages between the NEX protocol and the EOS lenses also translated?

Probably not but that's a great idea. And some LANC controllers have aperture control as well. A smooth aperture pull would be a real possibility!

I bet you can take something like this off the shelf and make it work. :)

Certainly the Birger system has the electronic follow focus, there's a video on vimeo showing a prototype in action. It's difficult to tell for sure but there does seem to be a bit of delay between twisting the FF and some focus action but perhaps that's just the prototype.

This would be a great avenue to explore. I do remember that it's quite variable depending on the particular lens and the number of electronic steps it provides, but some are very granular and so would work very well. It would be fantastic to be able to program a couple of points and transition between them.

Definitely an avenue worth exploring, it can certainly be done and it would add a lot to the system. Not least because perhaps it would lead into off camera FF, perhaps even wirelessly (thinking steadicam/crane shots)

Go for it :)

I think i might be in one of the first batches, they took the money and i've not had anything to say that i won't get it. Fingers crossed...

cheers

Hi paul, your PayPal receipt is your order confirmation but no separate confirmation will be sent until the product is shipped. Sorry for the confusion.

Of the top of my head the Contax N Planar 50/1.4 autofocus (which can be modified by us to Canon) has about 3,000 steps of resolution. Some L series lenses e.g. the 200/2.8L had about 2,000. In general wide-angles have less focus resolution (in the hundreds range) because distance that the lens elements have to actually move is very small. Fortunately wides don't need a huge amount of focus resolution either.
