Re: World's First Electronic EF to NEX Adapter!

Tempting. Doesn't do AF, although on the site it talks about Electronic Manual Focusing and i'm not sure what that is. Also not confirmed to work with FS100, although i would hope so.

I do have some nice canon lenses, however the focus throw on the barrels is quite short and for MF on the go they may prove tough.

Could be worth a shot though - I'd love to see or hear from someone who has tried one on an FS100

cheers

Wow, that looks great. I have mostly FD lenses but need to get some zooms and wider lenses. Was considering the new alpha mount adaptor, but if the IS works as advertised, this seems like a no-brainer over the Sony mount.

I just bought one, worse that can happen is i sell if it doesn't work properly (I also have NEX cameras too)! Wonder if there is plenty of stock (they say so) and how long it will take to reach the sunny UK.

cheers

As much as I want to press the buy button the terms and sales approach are ridiculous. No details or video of how it works with a term of service of: Items purchased are not returnable for refund or exchange. All sales are final.

I hope it works perfectly but its a shame there no demo.

I believe Conurus has an account here. Perhaps he may be willing to answer some questions for us via the forum?

I see that it specifies compatibility with EF-S lenses, but no mention of EF lenses, even though the product is called and EF to NEX adapter. Hmmm. Pretty sketchy release, but I've got to give them credit for getting something out.

The Ef or EF-s issue is a good point. This is the adapter I've been waiting for but I can't get around how apparently difficult an adapter like this has been for other companies to produce and when one does get produced like the MTF its got an external box and cables and batteries and this one has none of that. It seems a more detailed unveiling would have been obvious. But I'm guessing they only have a small quantity and they don't need a rush of orders at this point. Maybe they're holding back to gauge any issues from the ones that are released, gauge sales numbers, etc. But I still can't purchase with a Draconian term of service agreement when I don't know what limitations the adapter has.

The main conurus website has a forum with more details and a couple of demo videos.

I don't think what they're doing is too complicated. They've been working on these kind of electronics for a while (look at the contax N conversions). So they're very experienced. I would imagine the most complicated bit is shrinking the electronics down inside the adapter. There's no external UI to create, it's all using the camera signals.

Some of the other attempts, the birger for example also includes controlling the focusing motors, there's been no attempt at doing that (i think).

As for EF vs EFS - the mount and electronics are the same, EFS just has a smaller image circle which should be fine for the FS100. I have a nice 10-22mm that i look forward to trying on this along with a 17-55 IS 2.8.

cheers

You mean the NEX 5 demo video that was made with the cables all hanging out that was released in March of 2011? Is there another one I'm missing?

Does it work with the Fs100? Even Sony's own LA-EA2 adapter has issues with the Fs100 and needs a firmware update to work with the Fs100 ( not sure if that has happened yet)

LA-EA2 requires firmware update for new functions such as auto focus but other simple functions like changing aperture should work without the firmware update. Conversely the Conurus adapter is not all that complicated. It simply provides electronic connection for aperture change and IS.

The point being that theres NEX and theres NEX fs100. Obviously a difference in signal code because what works on cameras like the NEX 5, 5n does not necessarily mean itworks for the FS100.

Also from what I've read people are requesting better iris control for the La-EA2 with the Fs100. With still no autofocus control.

Thats a sony adapter with a sony camera having issues so please lets stop with its easy and not complicated to get iris control.

mico: posting those dangling wires on YouTube was one of my life's greatest mistakes (giving everyone a mistaken impression of the workmanship of the final product). I am very happy today because I was finally redeemed. You see high precision CNC, proper internal reflection control, strong leaf spring mount, nice chrome/black anodized finish, gold-plated electrical contacts, and circuitry that is completely hidden from view.

I confess we have not tested with FS100 yet. We will be able to get our hands on one in a week or two and I would actually suggest all of you to hold off but not place your orders until FS100 tests positive, just in case.

I will speak to Metabones about their return policy, for sure. I personally agree with you that as it now is, it is unfit for a product of this calibre. We both stand behind our product, that's for sure, but I will speak to them about the TOS.

ectobuilder: I think more properly, MTF Services in the UK got the title "World's first electronic EF to NEX adapter". Let's give that credit to them. They shipped ahead of us by about a week. Our claim was "the world's first electronic control of Canon aperture by Sony NEX". "By" is the key word here because there is no control box or external power. Your Sony camera is your control box or external power.

Manfred Poehlmann: the connector on the side is for the attachment of optional accessories in the future. It is not required for now and is left unconnected.

paulcurtis: certain Canon lenses, most notably the EF 85/1.2L, doesn't even manual focus without a power source. That's what we meant by electronic manual focusing.

Wonderful. Thankyou for posting that info. All is good. I wait impatiently for your FS100 results.
