Re: World's First Electronic EF to NEX Adapter!

I am an early user of the mkI version of this adapter and I have to say, for the most part it has been fantastic. While I am VERY happy they have converted the inside to circular rather than rectangular, and have worked to reduce reflections, I have to be honest, in real work usage it hasn't been a huge problem. I was really worried when I got it that it was going to be an issue.

Also, given the price compare to other adapters, the quality has been pretty decent. If I were to say there was any issues I dealt with, I feel the mount to the body is FANTASTIC, whereas the mount to the lens is not always the most tight. It's interesting how much variety there are in lens mounts because some lens are tighter than others, so in that, I just found it strange.

Occasionally, the communications get a little mixed up and I've had some flickering. I am not sure if that is a connection point issue with the lens (maybe the ones with more play). In about 5 days of shooting this happened once and not again.

I am moving to the mk2 version and I will be reporting back on how I feel it works in comparison to the mk1. For the price I paid, I feel like I REALLY got a good value.

I have also purchased a Version II adapter and will be using my Version I as a back-up. It will be nice to know that if one of my Metabones adapters malfunctions in the field, I will have a back-up to bail me out.

Where did you purchase it? Everywhere I look it's not shipping yet. (or did you just get on a mailing list?)

The best thing to do is visit their website and get on the waiting list. This is how I got my mkI.

I did this exact thing months ago - and have never got any kind of response or notice from them, ever.

And yet people here keep buying them directly from them on eBay with no wait, retailers keep getting new stock to sell etc.

So I don't know if I'd agree that it's the best thing...

There is no harm whatsoever signing up for the waiting list, as no deposit is required. So, if you see it elsewhere down the road, buy it from the retailer.

Every manufacturer selling both direct and through distributors has the same dilemma. Do you allocate all stock to your own web site first? Or all to your distributors first? Or somewhere in between? There is no solution which makes everyone happy and luck becomes a factor in stock hunting, unfortunately.

The good news is Mark II is redesigned to be much quicker to manufacture. As a result, production capacity ceases to be a problem and the waiting list will soon be a relic of the past. Right now, the waiting list is still here because those who have already signed up in the last few months are served first, but the list is certainly shortening.

Conurus, what "third" modification is being done to Mark II, to make a newer update for the FS700?

Will the FS700 version be fully compatible with the FS100?

I would assume the bokeh issue is now fixed, since the old version had a smaller rectangular opening, and the new version has a large round opening.

Mark I adapter with firmware v.5 or above was tested with FS700, so no modification or update would be required. I suspect it would work all the way back to firmware v.2 just fine. There has never been the need for a FS700 version.

All this confusion may have come from miscommunication with one of the distributors. I speculate they confused Mark II = FS700 support but before official announcement they would not have spelled out there existed such a thing as "Mark II". The fact of the matter is that Mark I works great with FS700. You may get in touch with that specific distributor and ask what specifically they are referring to.

I am no expert since I only deal with the electronics...but I have never seen the clipped bokeh issue personally. I am confounded as all Canon DSLRs have rectangular mirror boxes and the Mark I adapter was shaped just like that. But Mark II has a round opening and that opening is very large (its diameter is as large as the diagonal of Mark I's rectangular opening).

Conrus, quick question for you.

On the Metabones Mark 2 version, can the future firmware updates be done via web download? Or will you still have to mail the adapter back to the Hong Kong factory for Firmware updates?

It would be nice if the customers can just download it as opposed to mailing it back.

Sony has proprietary technology and software to update through USB while the lens or adapter is mounted on the camera body. We do not have access to that technology.

We have to see put this in perspective - an adapter or a lens is very different from a camera body. You would expect to upgrade a camera body's firmware in the field a few times over its lifespan but firmware updates for lenses are almost unheard of and adapter updates are very rare and infrequent. For instance, I have never heard of such a thing as a Canon lens firmware update (possible but factory-service only) and a Sony lens firmware update is theoretically possible but never required in practice. Sony's own LA-EA1 has been updated once and that's it.
