Re: Canon FF Forum

Hmmm...

No, I don't think so.

It's just that Aside from the 1DC, which is more in the "Cinema" range due to its price and features, there's really only the 5D and the 6D.
They haven't really been changed much in the past few years, and they're refined enough to just work really well.

The overwhelming majority of all "DSLR or Mirrorless" (or really any camera that's shaped like a stills camera) that I ever see everywhere on shoots, on product videos everywhere from YouTube to B&H's site, to corporate stuff, training videos.... it's ALL 5Ds. ...STILL.

If you watch a thousand different videos on YouTube about camera and video and lighting and rigging tech, you'd come away thinking the 5D was the only camera there even was.

I think my point is that they just work, and they haven't had anything new added to them for years, so there's not really much left to discuss.

To this day I still think that of all the cameras that are shaped like a stills camera (DSLR or Mirrorless) the 5D with Magic Lantern RAW is the best image put out by any of them.

Human Beings are shockingly obsessed with the word "new".

I have a sony FS7 but I still use my 5D II for situations that call for something smaller and I definitly get tons of use out of it for still photography. The camera works and has great color science. Yes the moire isn't great in difficult situations, it's not the sharpest option out there, and it doesn't have the most dynamic range but there are plenty of situation where none of that matters.

People like to buy new cameras and there are better options out there for new cameras. That being said, if you have one or need an affordable used camera then it's still a great option.

There's not a lot of activity in the forum once everybody has their tools set up and working without issues. It just tells you that there are no news on the Canon FF front, it's the same thing from 4 years ago (that's how old the 5D3 is), and it's good enough for a lot of people (not me). I still see many more Canon shooters than anything else.

I agree.
I own an A7S, but nothing compares to 14bit RAW.
SLOG is nice, but even the added DR and roll-off doesnt hold up when going digging for colors like the 5D MkIII.
For stills it is also better than the Sony as well in my opinion.

The rumors of 5D MKIV rumors are still pending. Maybe at PhotoKina in September.

^ Sounds a lot more like a wish than like an actual rumor. But NAB is just a month-and-a-half away, so, we'll know soon enough..

I honestly think that, for video shooters, Canon is in need of a "kitchen sink" strategy. In its $3,000-$3,500 range, it'll have to show something more than the A7SII and RII ... and, we can pretty much eliminate SII from the start. And RII was a generation ahead of Canon when it came out about eight months ago. And now Sony has a lot more lenses than it had back then too. And a bunch of electronic EF to FE adapters are being released as well. If Canon goes business as usual, a lot of people will be moving on.

Canon will go business as usual I think. Even if they add UHD. It's not going to have the toolset people are looking for (hoping for). In other words, probably no CLog, DCI 4K, peaking, flip out screen, clean HDMI above HD, 10-bit recording, etc.

My bigger question is, if it does do UHD, will the Magic Lantern folks be able to hack it to shoot raw at that resolution or will the data output be too much?
I guess in that case I'm really hoping for CFast, but my guess is no. CFast was put on the 1D X mkII so it could do 4K at 60fps and I doubt the 5D will go that high to match the 1D X which means they could get away with CF at anything 30fps and under.

The idea for MKIV is to be a jack-of-all-trades. With 1DXII being marketed as a primary (high end, action) stills camera, it'd make a lot of sense to include a lot of video features into a ~ $3,500 5D MKIV, especially since Sony does so with RII. Because,if canon cripples MKIV, those who need high quality video at this price point will just buy either an EF-to-FE electronic adapter or a bunch of Sony and Zeiss primes to go along with their new Sony body.

And Sony has a lot of bodies. And will soon have a lot more. I suspect.

Those answers amount to "this is not the camera you're looking for" and "go buy a C300 II". Thankfully other manufacturers aren't so stubborn.

The latest C'rumor - or perhaps, even more than a rumor but something that is factually based - is that 5DMKIII is discontinued, with several retailers being unable to land themselves a stock replacement. And, if that's the case, then the preparations for the MKIV (or 5DC or 5DX, or whatever it is going to be called) production must be underway.

Well, another rumor on CR is that it "might" be called EOS 5D MKIV. This is what it has come down to. The name rumors.

According to the Canon Rumors, MK IV's are being tested out in the wild.

The official unveiling is expected at PhotoKina in September.

I did a test the other day. A7SII, FS5, F3 and 5DMarkIII.
It was exhaustive, SLOG2 and 3, under/everexposure etc.
What look best for color?
The 5DMarkIII in RAW.
You can't beat 14bit, until you get into much more expensive cameras.
The DR might be greater these days, but it is really impressive how ML has extended the life of this camera.
