Rate these lenses for the 550D that I will be getting

Sigma 30mm f1.4

Trust me.

Totally agree with this guy.

Who cares though.. people just don't listen and buy the crappy built 50mm 1.8. Sick to death of sharing my experience with the awesome Sigma 30mm 1.4 and having people go crazy saying instead to get the Canon 50mm 1.8. Too telephoto but I'm sick of saying that at this point. It happens over and over on these forums.

Okay guys, I've been away and researched. I concluded to get the following:

Canon EF 28mm f2.8
Canon EF 50mm f1.8 II Lens
Canon EF-S 55-250mm

BTW, my 550D will arrive in few hours... can't wait :)

I have the EF-S 55-250, 50mm 1.8, EF 24mm 2.8, and the newest addition is the Tamron 17-50 2.8 non VC.

The 55-250 is OK, but I want to sell it for the 70-200 F4 after a few shoots. It's a good lens and cheap but not really contrasty enough. Works well in contrasty situations though and has IS which is the reason I got it.

The 50mm 1.8 is a fantastic piece of glass for cheap in a fantastically cheap case. Get's the results though.

I bought the 24mm 2.8 in August because I needed a FF 24mm for a 5D shoot. Only used one day to date. selling soon.

The Tamron 17-50 I bought to replace the 18-55 kit lens when I sold my 550D and bought the 60D.

The only lens I use 95% of the time or more is the Tamron 17-50 2.8 Non VC You won't be happy only getting as wide as 28mm or even 24mm after a month. I would start with the Tamron and see where you want to go from there. If you already have the other lenses consider the Tamron 17-50 when you need to go wider.

Just shot this with Tamron last week. Very accurate auto focus. In this out door shoot I couldn't even see the view screen except for framing. Great daily driver.

That's it!! I promise to get the Tamron 17-50 f2.8

I like the potential Sigma 30mm f1.4 has but on this cropped sensor, I will be getting 48mm focal length.

I ordered a very cheap Pentax PK Tokina 28mm f2.8 and that'll give me approx. 45mm. I'll see how that works out.

I am a man of close ups and low light videography so this f2.8 & f1.8 are what I'm after.

I have a quick question. I am diving into getting my first DSLR for video. I normally shoot on a Canon XL2. I have an opportunity to get the following,,,

Canon 7D Body - $1087 through loyalty Program
Canon T2i Body - $448 through loyalty Program
Canon T2i , 18-55mm - $511 through loyalty Program
Canon 60D body - $799
Canon 60D, 18 - 185mm - $1039

I have a Nikkor 55-200mm non-VR lens already. I am getting an EOS adapter. I plan on starting out with at least 1 prime. I thought about either the Nikkor 50mm or the Canon 50 mm. I know the 60D has the articulating LCD but the 7D body at the above price is nice. And yes, I will use the camera for video mostly. I am even thinking of getting a 60D or 7D and get a T2i body for a backup camera. Any recommendations?

I had the 550D paid $875 March 2010 ,sold it for $600 in Dec. and got the 60D body for $875. All good cameras but the cash loss speaks for itself.
If I were you I'd get the used T2i deal with or without the lens and wait for the next release before sinking in a lot of cash.
There is no image difference between the 550D and the 60D so the 550D for that price is a good place to get started.

Also the 7d has many limitations (no support for ml, dual chip design overheats on long shoots, etc)... I've actually seen people sell their 7d in favor of a t2i before.
Unless you need an external monitor with live 1080p while shooting, I actually think the 7d isn't a better choice at all!

Hi....thanks. I actually order the 550D body yesterday but canon screwed up my order. They canceled it so I have the opportunity to order again. May I ask what made you upgrade to the 60D? Also, ill be shooting video mostly, allot actually. Do you have a backup dslr or find yourself needing one to capture multiple angles?

Wow really? I didn't know about the over heating issue. Man I wish they would just place the 60D under the Loyalty Program...lol.

I'd 2nd the suggestion for the Tamron 17-50 2.8 (Non-IS). Excellent value for the money - it's a very popular lens.

Mine never seems to come off...

Somebody walked in with $600 cash so I thought I better sell the 550D while I could. The 60D has a few extra features I needed like the audio control and flip screen. Actually the controls and build are much better as well, but the 550D got the job done. A second camera would be useful but these cameras take work and concentration to get it right. You are getting this one so cheap you should probably keep it as the 2nd camera in the future once you've worked with one a while.

Okay...I actually went with the 60D after playing around with both cameras in the store and getting the rep to give me the refurb for an additional 5% off with the 18-135mm lens. After doing the math I could probably sell that lens for close to $300 alone if I wanted to get rid of it (its $399 new). I primarily shoot video and the articulating LCD screen along with the placement of the controls sold me on it. Not to mention the fact that I just picked up 4 jobs that will basically cover the cost of the camera. I have a stills gig this weekend. Do you recommend I get a prime ( canon 50mm f/1.8 II ) or will the kit lens do ok for now. I also own a nikkor 55mm-200mm non-VR lens. So I can sell one of the telephotos in favor of some primes. Any recommendations for other lens, flash unit?

glad you like it
(but I also think it deserves a whole lot of praise but not a "omfg"; that should be reserved to specially nice primes)

Nah. It's good but not that great. doesn't deserve a "omfg".

I never used a DSLR personally before but I was stuck with the kit lens for few weeks. At the time, I was saying to myself is this the best the 550d can offer.

I can't wait to play with the lens :)

Any prime comes to mind that is a OMFG? Looking to rent some lenses and I want to try some new things

I love my leitz elmarit-R 35mm f/2.8 and 90mm elmarit-R 90mm f/2.8; the summilux-R 50mm f/1.4 is supposed to be great too, but I haven't tried it

new, they're usually around $3000 each; mine are vintage, from the 60s and 70s, and they cost me around $300 each (the summilux 50mm is more expensive, around $600); there must be some differences (for a start, on the coatings), but they're not as big as you'd see on other brands, and even these vintage ones are amazing

also, lots of people swear by their zeiss ZE/ZF glass; if you want sharp, that's the place to go

For under $100, I prefer a vintage nikkor 50mm 1.4.
Nice big and easy focus wheel (the thrifty fifty canon has a tiny focus ring), and far better build quality.

I've personally found the tamron to be versatile, but kind of "meh" compared to vintage primes. That Nikkor gives me the "omfg" feeling. If you don't have the budget for Zeiss I recommend it.

True, many good lens choices out there. The Tamron 17-50 is still a good option in a 17mm. There aren't many 17mm 2.8 vintage choices. I have a Zeiss 16mm T2. Too bad it's an Arri standard mount.
