Raid 0 required?

I was reading the minimum required specifications for Edius Neo 2 software and it reads "RAID 0 is required for HD editing". Do all HD Video NLEs require Raid 0? Thanks!

Raid 0 is needed when you need more than 100 Mb/s of constant speed and depends on Format, compresion and size of your footage.

Any NLE works better with faster Storage. Raid 0 is a cheap way to get speed but not the safer. Raid 5 is the best option for profesional use.

Cheers

Read it again....
"ATA100/7200 rpm or faster hard disk, capable of sustaining at least 20 MB/sec data transfer. A RAID stripe set of two or more hard disk drives is required for multiple HD stream output"

Most FAST new dedicated hard drives will be fine... but if you bog them down with "multiple HD Streams" then a raid would be required.
My 1TB SATA drive can do 2 streams in RT.. the 2TB raid I have does 4 streams.

In what situation do you stream multiple HD outputs?

Is this specific to a certain NLE?

Im hearing of these issues and just want to understand the situation as someone who does multi-camera editing on Sony Vegas Pro.

Say you had the HDStorm/Spark/Thunder and were doing 2 PIPs over a video in RT with full raster, full rez out through HDMI.

Edius doesn't "preview" anything. What you see on the screen is what you see on an external monitor and what your client sees on the final export.
There is no "draft" mode.
It's good because what you see is what you get. It's bad because you need serious horsepower under the hood if you want to do multiple streams of HD.

multicam editing plays multiple streams of video at a time.

i can't get realtime playback of 4 HD 'streams' in multicam mode even on my 2x500gb 7200rpm sata2 raid0 scratch disk! and this is using the CanopusHQ avi codec for all clips.

guess i need a 4-disk array.

Ahh, I see how a 2 PIP HD Storm stream would be a problem for those that need that.

I have been using both filters & effects that are extremely CPU intensive lately. So any realtime preview is stopped no matter how the hard drive throughput is doing.

But I know what you mean, thanks for the info.
