Quick review of A7S vs GH4

Its all about an individuals needs. I myself returned the gh4 imediately. I just knew it was a step backwards for me except for 4k in which I doubt I will take advantage of anytime soon. Also I think panasonic should do something about how they over sharpen their cams. Not sure if they could address that with a firmware update.

i'm glad this guy did a retake with s-log. Now if we could just get him to use kohlis picture profile, this should give people thats looking at both these cams a better representation. on a side note. Look at the young ladies black see through. On the gh4 you can barely see through it but on the a7s its a different story.
That dude needs to learn how to not only WB, but grade an image. Which is why this hot chick candle test really doesn't say much. Remember then Coppola picked the Gh2 in the Zacuto shootout? So yes, I does boil down to individual needs. I think both of them are very very good cameras. Especially in the price points.

Actually, it looks like he did use the setup I posted. Just checked the info on the YouTube because it didn't look like normal Slog2 to me.

For this clip, this is the slog profile credit goes to a forum user named Kholi whose tests I was most impressed with:http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread....

I'm really hoping someone digs further into the profiles as well, there's likely more to eck out.

... I need to figure out how to get one of these things.

I feel bad for the guy. He's failing on this test. I don't think he's a video shooter and is trying to do tests that are out of his expertise. Round two is no better than the first video. He just keeps digging a deeper hole.

It's never good when you are apologizing in your video......

Eh it's never really easy to do this stuff. And it's just taking your own time to set something up. That, and honestly... the GH4 really isn't an easy image to work with. =[ At least he's trying to share some info, though. I think everyone can take it as they need it in the end.

I'm really stoked that people trying to figure the camera out.

Don't know why people bother testing the 5D with H.264, it's obviously got no hope of competing if it's not shot raw.

For that test, the GH4 had the best color. They used Slog2 with S-gamut for the A7S and were not able to bring colors back to normality in post. Even though the 5D3 was soft (H.264), I preferred its look to the C100 (had the proverbial video vibe to it).
From my experience so far with the A7S, PP6 (Cine2 Gamma and Cinema Color Mode) works pretty well as a stock setting in bright sunlight. Next outdoor shoot I'll try Slog2 gamma + Cinema Color Mode (worked well indoors and lowlight).

As expected, the a7s was waaaaay ahead of the canons in DR, the GH4 waaaaaay behind.

Now: what's with the sky on the a7s? I stopped using my $50 polarizer because it made the sky a sad tone of bluish grey. Exactly the shade I'm seeing in the a7s both in this test and in the 5D3+RAW vs a7s comparison by squig. Is there a way to get rid of this and get a nice happy blue sky on the a7s?
(the problem could be either the color matrix, so choosing a different one could solve it, or some kind of IR or UV contamination, in which case other blue stuff will look fine and only the sky will have this issue, and filters would solve the issue)

Yeah the C100 did look very video-like, but that's not normally the case with C-log. The vimeo A7s S-log vs C100 C-log test was interesting, S-log looked a lot more filmic than C-log.

Samuel I'm waiting for the right sky to do another test, I want blue sky with a few fluffy clouds, then I'm going to test the 5D raw, vs S-log (vanilla & Klog) prores and XAVC S + APS-C. This test should answer my DR, codec, and colour questions. Wanted to do it today but it was bloody cloudy.

The ranking is very similar, I believe their disc is rotating 18% slower than they think. If that's the case, the only odd result is that they find the GH4 much faster in 4K than I did.

Was the A7s footage you got reliable? Tripod levelled?

Could focal length be distorting the figures?

Yes, the a7s footage I got was pretty good. And my method (unlike theirs, btw) is robust to things like a non-perfectly-level tripod. Focal length shouldn't matter in either mine or their test, since we are translating everything to ms.

That red Tshirt does not look very good on the A7s. IR pollution?

Can't say that I've noticed any IR pollution but I've been using Kholi's modded S-log the whole time. A lot of peeps are using Visioncolor Luts and some of them are heavy on the magenta.
