Can I shoot 720 24pN and save to disk - then import from disk to FCP?
What do you point fcp to in order to import - is it the vid files? Sorry - I'm an avid guy doing a job for a FCP guy and need to make sure he knows how to import,
I'm pretty new to FCP, and have just imported my first batch of 720 files from an HVX shoot. I set my preferences for 720 24p. I am not sure, however about the 24pN part.
I transferred all the files to a second internal drive using P2 Genie (trial version) and then in FCP I just use FILE>IMPORT>PANASONIC P2 and it worked fine.
I hope that helps, but hopefully somebody that knows final cut will chime in. At least you can give it a try while waiting for a better answer.
Whether through drag and drop, P2 Genie, P2 Log, whatever, copy the Raw contents (LastClip.txt AND Contents folder) into folders on your Macintosh system (how you organize that is up to you). If you have the space you might want to copy it straight to folders (that you'll make) on the desktop. From what I've seen around here, it seems people find better success and make FCP happier if the various "cards" (folders) are on the desktop.
Setup your Capture Scratch to where ever you want all the footage to be going (whether it be an INT drive, EXT firewire drive, whatever, just don't forget about your capture scratch).
Create a bin (or bins) inside of FCP and set your logging bin (either once if you're dumping all cards inside one or set it each time for each card's bin).
Open up FCP. File | Import | Panasonic P2. A dialogue window shows up. Hit the "+" button to direct it to the necessary "Volume" (the Volume will be the various folders you have made on your hard drive for the various cards you have shot). Give your card its "reel" number/identifier information. Then either select the clips you want and hit import or just hit import all and download/process all the clips on the card. As for the check mark about removing duplicate frames, it shouldn't affect you if you shot in Native mode because you didn't shoot duplicate frames.
I think that covers you. And make sure someone is backing up all the raw data (contents folder and lastclip.txt file) just incase anything weird happens during processing.
The P2 card is your master tape. Whatever it makes, you need and want to back up. So the LastClip.txt file AND the Contents folder is your master. Not one or the other, but rather both combined create your master. So don't discard it because its only a few kb in size and not an actual video/audio file itself. A little bit of organization and you're good to go.
Previously, to my understanding, yes, no .txt = no import. With the major upgrade the import process just got, I'm not sure. Might be something new for Ben to test out. Or just test it out yourself, just takes a few mins (shoot the wall, shoot your feet, shoot yourself, voila a few clips ready to go, then try doing an import w/ the txt file).
