hi all,

this is my first thread in this forum and am expecting suggestions and advice from you all:).

i have a Canon Xh a1s camera. now i cannot afford Canon 5d Mark II so i was wondering if can i use t2i/t3i as my second camera, as b-roll camera? i have few questions regarding canon t2i/t3i which are as follows:

1.- will i be able to blend the t2i/t3i footage with my xh a1s? or will there be quite a jump in the image quality?

2.- i mainly want the t2i/t3i to shoot wide exterior shots and i also want that shallow depth of field for interview. which lens should i go for? (please suggest me lens which i can use on 5d mark ii if i get it in future).

kindly help in my query.

regards,

I bought a refurbished Canon T3i with the 18-55 mm kit lens from Canon Direct about a month ago for $567 shipped.

That was with an extra 15% discount - look around for coupon codes.

There may be a newer Canon T4i announced in June, according to some sites. Shipping? TBD - July, August? Just FYI when ordering an older body, always something to keep in mind.

My all time favorite Canon lens is the 24-70 L 2.8. If you eventually want to complete the zoom lens kit, there are also a 16-35 mm 2.8 and a 70-200 2.8. They are all high quality lenses, but not cheap (starting around $1,000 used.)

There is also a new Canon 24-70 2.8 II that has not yet shipped. That one will be $2,300, but improved optics and lighter. For zooms I would only recommend the "L" lenses. There are some decent non-L primes - the 28mm, 50mm, 85mm, maybe a 135mm?

Good luck! Have fun.

thanks unadog for the reply. as u know i am short on budget, so was wondering if u could suggest me some good inexpensive wide lens i would be thankful.

planning for t2i/t3i. i want to use it to shoot wide shots and for interview with shallow depth of field. please suggest me two lenses, one for wide (Tokina 11-16, as mentioned by Victor) and another for shallow depth of field.

The Tokina is a nice wide. If you really want to go shadow then the go-to lens is usually the Canon 50mm F1.4. There are also some faster Canon primes if you want to go a bit wider.

which lens for shallow depth of field for interview? i want a lens that will make the background blur from a reasonable distance say like the camera is 5 ft. away from the subject

Samyang 14 f/2.8, samyang 35 f/1.4, samyang 85 f/1.4...
A very good and cheap set of primes that will cover most situations...

i would also like to have some more information regarding the t3i.

1- does it record in 1080p/i?

2- does it have separate buttons/dial to adjust shutter and aperture?

and also: 1080p and 720p only - there's a wheel for shutter speed, button+thatsamewheel combo for changing aperture; if you want a dedicated wheel for aperture, go for the 60D

which kind of lens can be used on APS C as well as Full Frame Sensor cameras? i think i should get lenses that will be useable on full frame sensor Cameras, so in future if i have budget to buy full frame camera, i could use these lenses.

this is the rule you're looking for: any lens that can be used on full frame cameras, can be used on aps-c cameras (but not the other way around: some lenses that work on aps-c, won't work on full frame)

the t2i/t3i are cropped sensor cameras. does this mean that the shallow depth of field will be less to achieve compared to full sensor cameras? in other words the 5d mark ii will have more blurred background keeping the subject in the foreground in focus? full sensor cams have bigger field of view compared to aps-c cams, but will it also have more blurred background?
