Question about Tamron 17-50mm rotating rings

Hi guys,
I've bought a 600D mainly for the video capture option, and I'm thinking of buying the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f2.8 XR Di-II LD Asph. IF, but I have a big question.. About the rotating rings, do they rotate smoothly or do they make a "click" sound?

By the way, I've read that the non-VC version is better for the video, but some others say that the VC is better.. put me a bit confused :/

Cheers all.

depends which rings you are talking about.
usually zoom ring do not click (no reason) and aperture ring clicks (to allow fixed values 2.8, 3.5 etc...)
You can easily declick them since the click is just obtained by a small steel ball travelling in a slotted track.
Problem is then you can hardly get same setting twice.

The 17-50 does not have an aperture ring.

I've seen first hand how much VC adds to run and gun videography.

That is worth a bit of sharpness in my book.

except in this case it's not "a bit"

some people in this forum are quite happy with the VC version, but if I needed that I'd save a bit more and go for the canon instead

edit: I tend to be very sensitive to my own images being soft, that's why I sold my ND fader and now use the much less confortable screw-in filters, and why I'm so obsessed with testing all my lenses and only using them at apertures that I know will be sharp; surprisingly enough, I am a lot more forgiving towards anybody else's images

I have the VC version of this lens. I'm very happy with it for video and stills.

There's no clicking on either the zoom or focus rings (and, as said earlier, there is no aperture ring)

Im in agreement with Norman and i also sold my Fader. I have owned both versions of this lens and sold the VC. I own the non VC version now....and yes...it is a better lens IMO. i can EASILY obtain steady shots within this range. So i dont need VC and the added sharpness is very welcome.

Are you from FD mount era?
These are moden EF lenses, they have no mechanical appearture ring, all EF lenses do not 'click' when focusing or zooming.

VC is very important for video.
Whoever told you VC is un important , is not a run & gun shooter.
This particular lens is just that.. a run & gun lens, you dont particularly use zoom lenses in production shoots. so you will be fine, as the quality is comparible to the EFS (non L) canon f2.8 of the similar zoom range.

I didn't say VC/VR/IS is not important, I said I wouldn't use the tamron 17-50 VC: either stick with the non-VC version, or save a bit more and go for the canon 17-55 f/2.8 IS
