Question about G5 regarding HVX (help asap please)

Hey guys

Just about to go out and purchase a 2.3 GHz G5 computer to edit my HVX on, and wondering if I will need to upgrade it at all? Or will it be able to edit my HD footage fine?

Please reply ASAP as I need to leave in 5 mins :|

Thanks in advance

Well, that's quite a short timeline. I was going to say that you might want to wait as everyone is pretty certain that Apple will be introducing the Intel replacements for their PowerMac line next month at the WWDC.
But since you're already gone... I'm editing HVX footage on a PowerMac Dual 1.25 G4 with 1.25 mb of ram. I get about the same performance as I get with DV.

I ran multiple streams of HD full-screen, full-rez, full-frame-rate on a dual 2.0ghz G5 with 2.0GB of RAM, all off the internal hard disk.

yeah.. G4s just barely have troubles with 1080.. G5's all eat through them.

I would get a mac book pro though right now if you hafta and then wait till next month for the new towers as well. you can hook a keyboard and mouse and monitor upto your macbook pro and it will be just as fast as the dual tower g5s...

Jared,
You might be right about the 1080. I've only edited 720. But I am amazed at how efficient the DVCProHD codec is. I really don't notice any big difference from editing DV --- the renders don't even seem longer! And I second your advice on the MacBook. That's the way I would have gone too.

I can also vouche for the red-headed stepchild of the plain macbook. Handles HD like a champ and a lot cheaper. I decided to get the lower-end model macbook as intell is releasing their 2nd generation of duo core soon.. and that is supposed to be smoking. I did only see an advantage with the macbook pro as regards to the graphics card and the extra systme bus.. but I don't think I'll need that too much especially when someone gets the wise idea and makes either a USB or FIREwire cardbus.. so then P2 inserts here I come...

Loving the macbook

I ran seven streams in RT off my DP 2.5 G5.

One full screen, and six reduced to 33%. There was a green render bar, but it was full screen RT.

I have a G5 Quad and it has no probs whatsoever with 1080P even...just keep it in DVCproHD 4:2:2

I'd wait on the MBP until at least August 7th.

I'm anticipating a speed bump and motherboard revision at Developer's Conference.

Don't know for certain, but several factors point to it.

I have a Quad G5 with 2.5G of ram and a black MacBook with 1G of ram. The G5 Quad screams editing 1080p - The MacBook dosen't scream but it still shouts pretty loud.

As a side note, don't even THINK of trying to do anything in Apple Motion on a non-Pro Macbook. The lack of a dedicated graphics card makes it laughable, but it runs Final Cut just fine.

If I were you, I would want until August 7 to see if Apple introduces the Intel-based POwerMacs. It's almost certain that Apple will do so, and those new machines should wipe the floor with a current-gen G5. Of course, the new machines may not ship for another month or two (knowing Apple), but you'll at least be able to make your purchase with all the options in front of you...

Hi, I'm in a similar situation as the starter of this thread. I can't wait until the new generation of desktop mac computers will start shipping, and need to decide what to do. What would be a better choice? A Macbook Pro or a G5?

It seems the memory is faster on the Macbook pro, and the processor is Intel which I guess is an advantage). However, is the graphics card powerful enough to handle extensive compositing for example...? or the ability to use high-end graphics cards in the G5 going to make a big difference?

BTW:
If I go with the Macbook pro I will choose the biggest one, with 17" wide-screen and Firewire 800 (additionally to the Firewire 400 that the other ones have).

Let me know what you think...

Thanks!

Yuval.

I have the same system, with less memory. I can edit 1080i perfectly. I don't see a perfect full motion HD picture. Memory or video card?
Thanks Paul

I was running 720p/24 footage off the internal drive of a PB 1.67 out the DVI port to the HDMI input of a LCD HD.

Ran beautifully.

So for someone (like me) who can't wait until the new apple desktops come out, what would make more sense to buy now? A desktop (G5) or a laptop (Macbook-Pro)? Consider that I'm comparing the following configurations (which are also comparable in price):

Macbook-Pro:
2.16GHz Intel Core Duo
2GB 667 DDR2 - 2x1GB SO-DIMMs
100GB Serial ATA drive @ 7200 rpm
MacBook Pro 17-inch Widescreen Display
SuperDrive 8x (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Backlit Keyboard/Mac OS - U.S. English
AirPort Extreme Card & Bluetooth
17-inch TFT Display

or

Power Mac G5:
2.3GHz Dual-core PowerPC G5
2GB 533 DDR2 ECC SDRAM- 2x1GB
250GB Serial ATA - 7200rpm
NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT 256 MB SDRAM
16x SuperDrive DL (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
Apple Keyboard & Mighty Mouse - U.S. English
Mac OS X - U.S. English

What do you think would make a better investment?

does anybody use a PC by any chance? I just ordered a new pc (amd 64 4200+ dual core processor with 2gb ram). Should be able to handle HD material, no?

Yes it should handle HD quite well, depending on what software you run on it. EDIUS Broadcast would work very nicely on a system like that and it has 100% HVX support.
