So heres the teaser trailer for our new short film, Pursuit. Its a 30 minute action/ chase film where a man wakes up and finds himself being pursued by three bounty hunters. Can one man outlast three trained killers? If youre a fan of fight scenes, explosions, chases, and nature, then you wont be disappointed.

Shot on a 100a and a 100b.

i love the silhouette fight scenes in front of the sunset, looks sweet. and the graphics look pro, too.

The quality of your footage is very good but the trailer didn't stimulate an interest in me to want to watch the feature. It looked more like an introduction to the actors. Put a little tease into it and you'll have it.

i liked it very cool, what was ur lighting setup , and what program did u use for CC ??? and did u use an adapter ???? and what setting did u use ??? film looks dam good cleeeeean images real nice

peace n luv

I felt the trailer lacked any kind of really information about the film. All we see is a young man being chased, without any thought given to the other aspects of the film, such as location, character development, etc. The shots were nice, it just didnt grab me.

Didn't you have a spec trailer for a feature featuring people in prison a while back? How did it go over with the studio people? I see that you used that loc. here... nice, way 'not to give up' on a location!
What's the story???? You lacked that in your other trailer, too. What are ya, an abstract expressionist or something, man? Tell us a celluloid tale, dude.
Cool shots, it looks like everybody had fun filming it.

I think I agree with Marlene on this one. Although the images look OUTSTANDING, and the fight choreography looks impressive as well (from what I could see), the teaser just seems a little too vague for the majority of people (but personally, I think I understand what it MAY be about, and I'm interested to see it).

one more thing... this isn't anything major, but I noticed that the very first shot of the two fighting, and the last one with the sun blacking them out... are the same sequence of moves. Not sure if anyone cares or will notice, but it caught my eye.

Well since you havent seen the film, how do you know that the teaser lacked information about it? (Its a teaser trailer by the way, not a full trailer) You say that it lacked information about the film, yet look at your next statement. You say "all we see is a young man being chased". Maybe since all we showed in the teaser was a young man being chased, means that probably the majority of the film is about that? (Remember, it is a short by the way) Of course, theres more to it, because we have a suprise ending, but you dont think I would give that away in the teaser, now would I? There are more events that occur, other than just chase, and you can see some of those in the teaser too, like the fight scene, fire, tires falling, etc. Next, you say "without any thought given to other aspects of the film, such as location..." Ok. Location? I didnt give any thought to location in the teaser? The teaser is full of location shots. I dont think I have to describe every location shot in there. You also can't forget that this is just a teaser. Did you see the teaser for The Omen? Their very first teaser was one steadicam shot around a boy in a swing. Thats it. No cuts. Now, alot of people could say they didnt give any information about the film, they didnt show locations or character development, etc. But it worked, because it was a teaser. Also, the reason that there is no dialogue in our teaser is because we really dont have any dialogue in the film. Its a chase film, and you rarely make conversation while youre running for your life from three killers that never slow down.

Is it really that hard to understand the story? A young man is suddenly chased by 3 men. As I said before, this is a short film, so most of the film is about that. The chase. Thats the story. What happens throughout the story, and how the story ends, is why you need to see the film. Havent any of you ever watched Alfred Hitchcock?

It was hard for us to cut this specifically because we dont have much dialogue in the film, and most trailers are filled with dialogue, but we decided to give ourselves the challenge of doing a film led by the action, events, and locations, and not as much of an inner conflict of a single character where the audience follows him throughout his journey. Yes, the main character does have a problem, and he has to solve it by the end of the film, but the film is still a heavy action film.
Another reason for doing the film was because we were losing this beautiful 50 acres of land and we wanted to capture it beautifully before it all got destroyed. So to any of those that saw the Tolerance trailer or the Oceans Firing Video, this is shot at the same location, yet most of those projects were shot indoors and we wanted to make sure and caputre the other 45 acres of land that was sitting behind the prison. (Which our most favorite is the rock cliffs that you can see at the very beginning of the teaser).

We didnt use any lighting on this film other than a 1 million candle power spotlight for lighting the underground tunnels (which arent in the teaser). We started when the sun came up and stopped when the sun went down.
I did some quick cc in vegas just to get the trailer up, because I really wanted to start cutting the film.
We shot high shutter speed alot during the bright parts of the day and in the fight scene. We only used a polarizer for the outdoor shots. No adapters.

Again, this was just done so we could start cutting the film, but once we get more finished we will have a more in depth trailer for all of you who need more to understand it all. Its really hard to cut this without giving away the ending. Maybe if some of you knew what the ending was you might understand why we have done it this way.

wow man! That second last shot of the talent turning around to meet the rolling tires was really film like. sweet! I also loved the part where the first kid running away is running in the hallway.

Hey Kevin,

The quality of the shots and the composition looked good. I echo what others have said about what you've pulled out of the camera.

As for interpretation, for me it seemed like an opening credit sequence to a TV show...about a guy being chased by three other guys. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

I'm not sure if anyone is meaning to offend you with their comments but I think you may be missing what they're saying. Why are these three fellows chasing the young feller? Are they evil? Did he piss off them or their boss? Otherwise what you have are some cool-looking chase and fight scenes but no....soul? perhaps.

As for the Omen trailer. You have an established story that people are at least passingly familiar with and so the kid on the creaky swing just...works, because there's history there that the viewer just "gets."

There's no history with your characters...yet. I'm sure there will be and I wish you the best as you cut a full trailer and your final film.

sincerely,

ian

I know they are not meaning to offend, and I see exactly what they are saying. Except the pieces needed to understand why these men are chasing him and why he has upset them lies in the ending of the film, and if we give that away, well then theres no point for the film. Have you ever had someone ruin the end of a film for you and you end up not seeing it because of that? I hate when that happens.
We here are Hitchcock fans; and Im sure you are familiar with how his stories work. And since we have very, very little dialogue, the only thing I know of to show anything about these mens characters is their facial expressions and their actions. I would think that they are evil, judging by how they are fighting this young man and constantly chasing him.
Would text in the teaser be a necessary tool to fill in the gaps since in our case dialogue cant? Also, should I lessen the character title scenes to not make it seem as intro tv show ish?
And with the Omen teaser, I was just trying to use that to back my point that this is in fact only a teaser, not a trailer. This was originally for people who know us to be able to see what the footage looks like, and once we finish the film then a more suitable trailer will (hopefully) follow.

Thanks for the comments. Greatly appreciated.

Thanks man. Although for the talent turing around shot I cannot take the credit. My other cameraman came up with it on his own. I was in the boat setting up for the tire scene and I just told him what scene needed to be shot.
The shot of the guy running down the hallway was actually not planned. We were so short on time we had two scenes filming at the same time and cameramen would film whatever part of the scene was closest to them. I was filming another character, and I heard that guy coming around the corner and I turned around to see if I could get him on film and I ended up with a real nice but shaky running shot.

Wow! You're really passionate about being so abstract. I guess none of us know all the demands of this production, so.. your the boss. Why do you keeping referring to Hitchcock? Did Hitchcock promote his films the same way? I seem to remember his promos as just being him, walking around his locations, telling the audience a bit about what happens in the story and throwing in a couple of bad british gallows jokes. Or do you have the same Hitchcockian themes like guilt, etc... hey, on that note.. where the Hitchcockian blonde 'ice princess'?? Is she the crazy ending you were talking about?

I guess what I was saying before in regards to needing 'story' is this: Basically we as filmmakers are always stuck telling the same story, over and over. What is it then that makes your 'story' (read:style or method of interpretation) different that all the other movies (in your instance a chase movie)??

That's what I'm asking. What makes your film different? Because your actors are rowdy young townsfolk with interesting names that flash on the screen? Because the hero has to overcome falling tires from the nearby tire farm? Because normally he is chased by one guy but now it's three? Because no one has ever filmed a martial arts scene in the sunset before? What is it?

I'm saying that, in my view, THIS should be the real subject of your trailer. What YOUR unique and desirable take as an 'artist' and 'storyteller' is.

Just my $ .02

You're still the boss.

I think that overall your trailer was well put together, however, there was no compelling reason to see the movie. You need to have some sort of voiceover or actual dialogue between characters to establish what the premise is. Pursuit is fine, but add some tension or something, a reason. A man wronged or wrongly chased, bad ass bad guys that have no redeeming value, something to pique interest.

Thanks Matthew.

Hmmm. Well we actually have no conversational dialogue in the film, just a few one liners. Like I said before, the reason for this pursuit, lies in the ending. I thought it would be fun to challenge ourselves by doing a project with very little dialogue, but by all of your comments, I guess that challenge was a little big. Although, I know that if some of you see the ending you will understand, but that still doesnt help us in getting the audience to see the story without them knowing the ending. I didnt know that it was going to be this tough.
Well we know that the footage looks great, so I dont have to worry about that... so any suggestions? Add text since we have no dialogue? Make something up about the bad guys to give it interest? Im out of ideas.

On another note, the film is coming along quite nice. We had one hilarious take where one of the bad guys was supposed to throw a sledgehammer into a door and the end of it stick out the other side, but he threw it a bit too hard and the entire sledgehammer went completely through the door. Priceless.

Thanks for the criticism you guys.
