Purchasing Advice

Hi,

I'm a newbie getting started with filmmaking. After reading several of the articles on this site, I believe the best camera for me is the DVX100B. Researching online, I can get it anywhere from $999 to $3599. Should I just go with the cheapest? Are they all the same? What would be the cause of such a huge price difference?

Is this still a widely recommended camera?

Lastly, several vendors offer silver, gold, etc. packages that include several accessories including cases, tripod, etc. Are these packages recommended? Are they quality components?

any insight is greatly appreciated!

Sorry to follow-up my own post, but how would I decide between the DVX100B and the HVX200? There's about an $800 price difference, but it may be worth it if the HVX200 is substantially better. thanks!

PLEASE take the time to read the stickies on these forums
before you send any online retailer any money

You'll be very glad you did.
The DVX cannot be gotten legitimately for $999 anywhere that I know of.
And the price difference between the DVX and HVX should be more than $800.

Buy from an authorized dealer - and most of all remember that if a deal seems too good to be true....it is.

the dvx100b is a great camera to start out with , you jump right in to learning 24p and advanced features. Better to go with a camera that you can learn than getting one you are going to learn in 5 minutes from wal-mart ....... I feel sorry for the consumers that go to wal-mart to buy a handycam :violin:

Before buy from ANY online shop, check out http://www.resellerratings.com. And for christ's sake, don't buy from ANY Brooklyn, NY shop (except for B&H Photo). They pull the whole bait and switch operation on you.

I personally got my camera from NewEgg for $2399. No they're not an authorized dealer but they get their cameras from an authorized dealer. Its the best LEGIT price I've found so far. Camera is 100% legit and according to Panasonic my Book/DVD/Software set is in the mail on it's way to me. But your results may vary.

Hmm BH has a DVX100b new (authorized dealership) for $2,599 and a HVX200 for $5,199. of course if you want to shoot HD of any flavor you need P2 cards or a Focus enhancements drive for another $1,500-$3,000. so really it's more like $2,599 vs $7,000. To add to the ho-hum.. will your final project be on DVD or download? if so, I would be the DVX100b would be nearly as good or as good as the HVX200 in the final DVD version if you recorded in 24p. I picked up a JVC HD110 and like it, but I often wonder if I couldn't have gotten just as good results (to the customers in DVD format playing on HD monitors) from a DVX100b for half the money and rendering times. Unless you are going broadcast HD or HD-DVD or Blue ray... then you have to go HD of some flavor.

Thanks for the advice. After checking out some of the sites, the rock-bottom prices were clearly a scam. With the correct prices identified, the HVX200 is outside of the price range.

The best price I've found from what appear to be a reputable dealer is from newegg.com. They aren't authorized but it seems they have very high ratings and it seems that what is sell is 100% legit.

thanks
