GH2 PTool v3.62D Released

66M will give you problems on GOP3. I went thru hundreds of settings beforee I arrived back to untuned settings of 132M, GOP 3, AQ2, Video bitratte = 3600000, and if neccesary T4 = T1 (if there is cadence - which is still unconfirmed by other people) This setting has been flogged to death on pappas chart, tree of death, bush of death, elecard buffer analysed (almost perfect bitrate to buffer ratio), timing test, YUV tests, etc... It is extremely stable and looks very good.

Ok, its high on bitrate and you'll whack thru your type 10 cards but the quality as Ralph_B has confirmed is on par with HDMI - more detail in the shadows and much less macroblocking.

The rushes look good and very filmic. Try it. :-)

GOP1 has been more difficut - and I have played around with again, hundreds of settings. The best I am happy with under AQ0 is a semi tuned 132M settings. This needs testing by others;-

Have fun :-)

anyone esle's 66mb patch exhibit problems recording in 1080i fh?

If you mean the Cbrandin 66M AQ2 patch then yes, it doesn't work for some of us (actuallly I haven't heard of anyone using it succesfully, but those with no problems don't tend to mention having no problems). Take all the 1080i related settings from the 44M AQ4 patch and replace the ones in the 66M AQ2 and you should be good (including the settings in the testers section of Ptool).

Where can I find a settings file for the Cbrandin 44 mb settings?

Chris Brandin's 8/29/11 66mbs settings for PTool 3.62d. After installing this patch, you can select "24H" for 66mbs, or "24L" for 48mbs, etc. as needed:

Hi Uwe & mpgxsvcd:

On 8/29/11 (see link in my previous post above), Chris posted a revised version of his 66mbs & 48mbs AQ=2 settings, saying:

"Here are updated 66M settings. The previous ones had stability problems and problems playing back in camera, so I wouldn't use them. I think these settings fix those issues. As before, there might still be spanning issues."

I like that his settings let you switch between 66mbs & 48mbs in the field by selecting 24H & 24L in the GH2's menu, so you can decide which to use depending on the scene, available memory card storage, etc.

YMMV.

You are right Peter. But this statement of him ""Here are updated 66M settings. The previous ones had stability problems and problems playing back in camera..." is only refering to the 66mb patch, not to the 44mb. The 44mb works pretty well and what I´ve read so far it works on the same level with the 66mb, AQ2. So, if it is the same I personally prefer less datarate for my sd-cards. And Chris Brandin himself prefers his 44mb, AQ4 too:

Personally I am using the 44M settings for GOP12.

Try this little baby:-

'Beautiful buffers' - maximum use of bandwidth = highest quality AQ2 for 1080p24 and AQ4 for 720p. Great 720p/1080p24. 1080i is nice too (though had to make 1080i LONG GOP - never harmed Sony ;-) ).

Includes: 132M Short GOP 3, 56M 1080i FSH Long GOP/1080p60SH default GOP, 48M 1080i/60FH & 108060pH - GOPs as above respectively.

Try 'em out. ;-)

Note: Low settings have to be fairly high (ie close to highest bitrate settings) to get stability of buffers. No other settings required. The only thing which may need testing is the cadence issue. The buffer charts for all settings are beautiful and peaking to highest bandwidth.

* Over 200 tests done to get matching settings working. All tests done on manual setting so report back. If they fail at SH try H - its still close.

Tip: If 56M 1080i/1080p setting causes a few crashes, just drop it down 1M to 55M. Nothing else.

Is it possible to revert to the stock Panasonic firmware once a hacked firmware has been applied? How is it accomplished?

Yeah!
It's the same procedure as loading the hack.
You must have a copy of the original firmware on your computer to use PTOOL anyway.
You just copy the original firmware by itself to a card, pop it in the camera and power it up. It will ask you if you want to "update" and you just hit OK.
Done.

Yes, just load the base firmware in the same way as if you were applying a hack, but leave all the checkboxes unchecked, except that you will need to check the version increment box. (It doesnt actually increment the version though - it stays as 1.0 on the camera)

This is interesting because these responses seem to be contradictory. I am hoping I am able to do what DPStewart describes and just load the original firmware over a hacked firmware and end up where I started. However, I had also thought it may be necessary to do what GrahamH said and to generate a new firmward from PTool with an incremented firmware version number so that I could overwrite the hacked firmware, but with all of the settings the same as the original firmware. Does anyone know for sure which is the case? Thanks!

James

I once again walked several times through the garden with the GH2 in my hand. I´ve tested out driftwood´s latest 720p60 patch with 56mb but I´ve got a lot of crashes with my 16gb transcend class 10 card. And the included setting for 1080p24 (132mb) is way too high for me. So, I took Chris Brandin´s 44mb, GOP 12, AQ4 and mixed it with Nick Driftwood´s 720p60, but the latter one with a bitrate of 46mb. To be honest, I have never changed any patch and I hadn´t the slightest notion how to do it. But I simply copied + pasted some lines together. Most likely, I did something wrong but it works so far. So, please build your own opinion...

Other than cadence there is no distinct difference between the 60p and the 24p shots.

All of you on here testing are doing great things, but most of us are eventually trying to figure out Whats the best settings to record in 1080 24p, and achieve bit rate consistently over 100mbs, that will eventually look great up on the big screen after its had a pass through professional color correction! I have shot a feature film with the Canon 5D with Zeiss ZE lenses and professional movie lighting. I have blown it up on a 20 foot screen and it looks great, so now Im wondering if I shoot with the GH2 VK Hack at 1080 24p at around 100mbs, will it look even better than the Canon 5D?

Yes, I have the same impression. I compared the 1080p24 and the 720p50 mode with the unhacked GH2 at the identical plants and bushes several times. And there was always a huge difference in IQ (to the disfavor of 50p). Now, with these new patches one can barely see a difference between them. That´s really great...
