This is slightly off topic since it's not a suggestion for the camera itself. But if the RED team would truly like to dominate the market, might I suggest developing an affordable HD color correction monitor and a 2k/4k coloring program that wouldn't cost more than the camera. Without this, most of us will still have to be reliant on ultra-expensive post-houses.

(I've got HDCam masters to my last short sitting in my room until I can afford the online/color correct. If you told me I could buy the RED color package instead of paying some post house 500 bucks an hour, I'd be there in a heartbeat.)

That's my point. Final Touch 2k is 25 grand.

I agree to a point. But not completely. Color correction is ceasing to be a black art only practiced by a few knowing wizards. And besides, people can say the same of cinematography, but that hasn't stopped all of us from wanting inexpensive professional equipment (thank you RED team) so that we can take a shot ourselves.
 
I think the industry will hit your requests by themselves.. 2k is starting to pick up steam, and as soon as Apple officially supports 2k the workflow will start to surround it... im not saying FCP is the end all be all, but it seems to be the NLE in the market that most 3rd party developers are flocking to produce for.

Your right, Jarred. I know we'll see the prices gradually drop. I thought I'd just plant a seed in the RED teams' heads since they have a way of making things that are 4 times as good for 1/10 the price.
They could completely rule the post workflow with that approach.

Dont worry.. Red has been on it since day one, Ted, Graeme and Stuart are working double time getting workflow worked out, and in the back room at NAB in April RED was showing a 2k demo with a pre-release FCP version that supported 2k.... and it was incredible.

Niiiice. It's a good time to be a filmmaker.
Here's hoping that Final Cut Extreme (or whatever they're calling it) stays in the same price range.
 
Yeah i hate the rumors of extreme costing 10x more than FCP... but i think if they wanted to hit avid hard they could do alot of damage.
 
FCP could always do 2k, it was the kona hardware and firmware that was new. As the price of cameras that shoot 2k and 4k drop, so will the software that works with 2k and 4k, and we'll stop seeing the arbitrary price increase for software that works on large frame sizes over a version that doesn't. That's my prediction, anyway. That's what disruptive technologies do!

Is the "FCP Extreme" real? I thought it was just a rumor?
No evidence of it at NAB...no public showing anyway...
Will Apple sell three NLE products or will "Extreme" replace "FCP PRO"?
Confusing...

I Apple could beef-up the meta data handling and data base management in "FCP Pro", they would give Avid a run for their money... :)
 
Color grading isn't a dark art, it just takes dedication to learning it just like cinematography. It's a blend of art and science, so it takes a lot of training and developing a good eye.

The reason the ultra-high end post houses get away with charging so much, is that they are good at what they do, and they can do it fast. Speed is key for the big guys.

If you are focused, determined and willing to sacrifice a good amount of your social life, you can learn pretty much everything.

Robert Rodriguez spent a ton of time doing videos before he did El Mariachi. It was his thing, that's why it seems so easy for him to take on so many tasks on his films now.


Final Touch is 25k for the 2k version, but 5k for the HD version, so there's a sliver of a difference between 2k and HD, just pick up the HD version.

The industry has been doing 2k since the early 90s, even earlier. I been working in 2k/4k since 94. Heck, I did 2k compositing for movies on an iMac.

It's just that the hardware/cost gap is closing really fast, so that 2k is becoming even more streamlined. FCP and AVID are the last to catch up.

4k is emerging on my end as the "new 2k" We could go higher if it made a different, but it doesn't.
 
Good points Thomas.. not sure if you understand my 2k coming to speed though.. your same argument about 2k being around forever can also be said about HD.. but look back 5 years ago and to cut 1080i HD footage woulda cost you a 100k in hardware... now you can do it on a $500 mac mini.

The question is: Is Quicktime up to it?
 
2k isnt a world away from 1080.. your looking at a couple hundred lines of chopblock action. And yes, quicktime can handle 1080 no problem, just take a trip to apple trailers and watch some 1080i trailers.
 
Although the last Apple 1080 HD video I downloaded looked awful. It looked low-rez, as if it had been scaled up. Certainly not the best advert for HD....

It will be nice when people are scaling down to get HD, not scaling up! :)

The best looking HD content I have seen online is DIVX, IMHO...
 
It looked bad bcause the source material was bad - nothing to do with the distribution codec.

I'll have to try making a 4k movie in quicktime and seeing if it will play.....
