PROJECT: RANT - semi finalists in the YouTube Nextup Contest (check it out)

Thanks Zaza -

An interesting note, which is something I knew in theory...but have now seen in practice... is this -

Often times when we put something online in the past I would feel like people must not be connecting with it because we wouldn't get a lot of comments or feedback. I'd warn anyone out there doing the same thing not to take the number of comments you get as any indication of whether or not people are watching and/or connecting with your material (case in point, the number of responses in this thread :) ).

We now have 30+ epsiodes of this series up, and we have recieved (on the site) a total of .... (drumroll please).... 3 comments. That's right, 3.

The thing is - meanwhile in the past month we've had roughly 50K views (possibly much more than that, but we're still working out some kinks in our stats, so that's a conservative estimate).

Oh - and those 3 comments I mentioned? We only recieved 1 of those in the past month.

Now what's interesting to me is that we've also asked people to submit material to the site - so that viewers can submit their own rants that we turn into episodes. The response rate on that has been huge (by comparisson to the comments I mean). We probably get on the average two to three submissions a day to the site, in the past month at least.

My point here is nothing groundbreaking... just nice to see it in practice....
and the point is -

Ask people to comment on your work, and you'll usually get very little response.
Ask the community of viewers to participate and take an active role in the creation of your work....and the response and engagement you'll get is much much greater.

I realize the numbers I'm talking about here are by no means huge - but keep in mind this is a series that less than 4 months ago didn't even exist. We've really done the bare minimum in terms of promotion... and spent very VERY little money overall. I can't say I'm disappointed with the response and viewership that we've gotten thus far.

That ... and it's been a lot of fun.
:)

I just noticed on my youtube account, I can access a page called 'insights', which lists some set of statistics, like a graph for accesses over the last several months, 'where' the accesses come from, in so far as where the series of proxies end... for those paranoid types... and I presume it got male female stats from youtubers who accessed the vidoes...

Wow - went out of town for two days and came back to find this great article on the show:
http://news.tubefilter.tv/2009/07/07/project-rant-gives-pissed-off-people-an-elegant-voice/

Unfortunately they ommitted Cliff's name as co-creator, but we're working on fixing that.

And as though that article wasn't enough - as a result the show blew up on Twitter today, thanks to Justine Bateman who apparently has become a big fan.

THIS is the greatest thing I've ever seen. Actors performing people's "posted comments". WOW. http://www.projectrant.com/

Who knew?

Yeah - that's how I felt.

Things got really out of control when Rainn Wilson retweeted her comment.
The response was so huge it crashed our site for awhile (unfortunately)

Do a search on twitter for 'projectrant' and you'll see what everyone has been saying about the show.
It's great to see people really connecting with it.
:)

So when is Justine going to perform a rant? :)

that's great Luis ... I enjoy the site ... glad to see it's meeting such great success

Wow - Metafilter...cool.
It's been a bit crazy, I checked our stats and already by 6am today we'd exceeded what our average daily viewership was just last week.

But - the interwebz are fickle - so I expect it will die down quickly.
I just hope we can hang on to the core of the new audience... but we have no crazy aspirations just yet.
:)

Thanks for the comments guys.
Much appreciated.

Well - we had to up our hosting account today because the site crashed at least twice that we know of. Looks like we lost out on a lot of potential views because our (incredibly cheap) hosting account was severely limiting how many people could hit the site at one time.

So - both good and bad news there.... good problem to have though, I guess.

In other news, we've already shattered the numbers we hit across the entire month of June (which I was already happy with) in just the past few days. Crazy.
Now there's no question the viewership will drop back down soon - just waiting to see where it plateaus.

Going back to the point I was bringing up earlier in the thread - even with this exponential spike in traffic, the number of comments we've gotten on the site are almost nonexistent (I think we got two or three in the past few days). Meanwhile our inboxes are overflowing with submitted material for the show - I think we got about 70+ rants yesterday alone.
Looks like i have some reading to catch up on.

PROJECT RANT covered in THE ONION

PROJECT RANT covered in THE ONION

So I go to The Onion's office on Sixth Street here in Austin a couple of days ago to drop off a press kit for my shorts at the Austin Film Festival.

Sign on the door says "During business hours this week door will be closed. Knock loud and be patient." So I knock loud and wait. No one ever comes so I slide my press kit under the door. When I'm kneeling down to do so, my face winds up hovering a few inches above some copies of the latest ONION they have on the ground in a little rack there. And what do I see featured on the FRONT page?

PROJECT RANT biotches!

Article spoilers: Some Celebs will be making appearances in project rant : )

Nice interview with Luis and Cliff too.

SOOOOO F'n' (can't spell tonight) funny!

I say it looks to good, (EDIT: There for it is) your contnet makes me laugh (my ass off btw) go shoot it on a dvx or web cam. Free yourself from the old days of best cam wins.

Love it man, Congrats!

Project Rant is becoming ubiquitous now.

During the post talkback of the feature Holy Hell tonight at the Austin Film Festival, an audience member asked:
"I was wondereing where you got alll your actors because I've seen them all on Project Rant?"
:)
(no joke)

JDS, I'm seeing it everywhere now. It could go viral (big time) it's on the edge.

That is awesome about the Project Rant actors comments! [Reverse that :)]

I am still trying to make a decent cooking show (typical borring action adventure type cooking show), I would call 'what's his name (aka LC)' for advice but I'm sure he is too busy to take my call or hangin at Dolche' living the good life :)
