GH5 Problems with my DC-GH5 in Adobe Premiere

UPDATE! So like I mentioned in the last post the video that I transferred from the SD card glitches when played off my PC. However when I played it on the 2nd computer right off the SD card it played fine. Well I brought the card back to computer 1 and it plays fine off the card, even when I use the no-name SD card reader. So it seems like something happened while transferring the file to the computer possibly? Doesn't that seem odd? It said it copied the whole thing. It's a fast ssd drive on the computer. But the same file definitely plays fine right off the card. I might have been running an intensive process on my computer while I was transferring the video file to it. But you'd think if it got every last little KB, it would all be fine, ya know? So confused as to how the video file would have that glitch on the pc copy from the card, but not when you play it off the card itself.

Righto. So it's not the GH5 then but yes you can lose or corrupt parts of the video in transfer, it's why professional production houses use a program called shotput to ensure the files are transferred correctly.

You should next eliminate the copy issue. Try to re copy it from the anker to the i9 and them remove the anker from the equation on the i9 and transfer wth the other reader. It could be the reader or it could be certain issues on Intel's side.

I successfully transferred the file again and this time it seems to be working off my PC. Tried it with both readers and it doesn't glitch in the same area of the video. Not to say it won't glitch in another area or on a different video. Obviously there was something that went wrong while transferring the first time. Maybe I used a different USB port? Maybe something was running on the PC at the time that made it not transfer efficiently? Never thought this would be a problem. I thought if a file says it transferred 100%, we were good to go. But since it happened on more than 1 file, I'm pretty concerned that something is wrong and I'm not sure how to figure out what. Is shotput expensive? Do you use it?

I tried the program you suggested on one of the suspected cards. I used an Anker USB-C SD-Card reader. Here are the results... Is this pretty good?

Looks fine to me. I don't think the cards are the issue, but maybe your SD card reader.

Okay... You're not going to believe this. So I came upstairs to the i9 computer. Didn't matter which card or card reader I used, pretty much each file would have gaps in the audio waveform. They would play off the card fine. Even if I dragged the video right off the card onto the premiere timeline (which i'm not sure you should do anyway) it would have gaps. I just moved the 3 files for 1 angle to my hard drive. I dragged them to premiere and they had gaps. I don't know why I tried this, but I renamed each file from things like P1000029.MP4 to something easy like dds.MP4 or 1.MP4 and no gaps. Am I going crazy? I can scrub at full resolution quickly across the timeline and there's not 1 pause at all. Where as before if there was gaps it would pretty much freeze. What's happening in this house? Am I haunted? This seems insane.... It's the same files. Shorter names... And it seemingly works. Haven't tried it with the other angles yet, but I'm about to.
Update edit*** Also, I just brought in the other 2 angles, didn't change the titles of those files at all and I don't see any gaps... WHAT IS HAPPENING?!?!? All 3 files are on the timeline for the first time with no gaps after renaming a few of the first ones to shorter names.

Could just be a premiere cache error. Make sure you are using the latest version. Changing the name of the file would force premiere to create a new preview and a new waveform, it does this each time you bring a clip in.

You can test this by trying to render out a section that appears to be bad in the premiere player, if the file is okay it should render out normally as it only conforms the clip for playback.

You may have to edit it in a non-multicam workflow.

How come? It looks like there are no gaps now… Also, how do I avoid these 20 minute files in the future? I know that at one point I was getting hour or longer clips off my GH5. I’m guessing I’m using the wrong format for recording. Or is there a setting? Thanks!

From the earlier discussion, it sounds like you are using the AVCHD setting for recording. If that is so, use the MP4 setting. This past summer, I had a client project where I shot HD at 20Mbps in the MP4 setting, and it was a 90-minute presentation. I think I stopped once to change batteries, otherwise it recorded continuously.

What do you use to transfer files to PC? Do you just copy the files from the cards ? I would suggest using either the Panasonic App https://av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/soft/download/d_pfs10xe.html or Sony Catalyst Browse https://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/catalystbrowse and do not do anything else on the PC while this is copying. I expect another application was using the same hard drive you were copying to that caused the glitches. I am just surprised the files worked at all.

I've actually been using the MP4 record format. It's the one that says MP4(AAC) "Best for viewing on PC" is the one I was using. Then for quality it was 1920x1080 420/8bit/LongGOP 100Mbps LPCM VFR available. Should that be longer files? There's no other setting that should make it 20 minute files if those 2 are selected? Thanks!

I always just drag the files off the SD card onto the PC. Why would that corrupt the files? It says it gets to 100%. Thanks!

That could be it. But, one thing... Each time I tried doing a new try, I would start a new project. However all the projects were in the same folder. Not sure if that would make a difference? Looks like the "adobe premiere pro captured videos" folder and the other folders are shared by all the projects in that folder. So maybe it was using the older versions of the video until I renamed it? Even though I made new projects?

If that is how you did it and one file on the card ended up as several on the PC then that way is clearly a problem. Using the Panasonic app or Catalyst Browse you can see how many files are on the card and choose which ones to transfer and to what folder. Even play and edit before transfer if you want. Clearly in your case the transfer process you used is a problem as you say playing from the card is fine but you end up with several files on the PC ? All 100% says is that it finished doesn't say how good the transfer was. I am particular with transfers and do not do anything else on the PC while it is transferring. There is always the possibility of PCIe conflicts between drives and other peripherals that are avoided when you do nothing else when transferring.

Oh no… The files were 20 minutes each on the card as well. They didn’t break up during transfer. I don’t know what is wrong with my settings. Because the videos used to be one long file. I’m using MP4. But it still producing 20 minute videos on the card.

Check the formatting of the card because that may indicate it is formatted FAT32. Not sure how that happened as I thought the GH5 always formatted the cards as exFat. What size is the card (as small cards come FAT32 normally) and did you format before you used it in the GH5. Start with a new card and format first in the PC as exFat then format in the GH5 but with the camera setup for UHD settings. Then change to your choice of mp4 and see what happens then.

They are all SanDisk 128 GB SD cards. I never format them on the PC. Always right in the camera. That’s why I think it’s a setting that is making this happen.

The MP4 (AAC) setting is the "consumer-quality" 1080p setting, for lack of a better term. It is recorded at 20Mbps or there-abouts. The 420/8bit/LongGOP 100Mbps LPCM is a much higher-quality record setting for 1080p. In my experience with my GH5, both settings allow me to record a single file that is longer than 20 minutes.

I've never tried to do this, but there is a micro-USB port on the GH5 that you should be able to use to transfer the files onto your computer. In other works, the GH5 will work as your card reader. I wonder what your results will be if you try transferring the files directly from the camera.

Page 33 in the manual. For AVCHD and MP4 FHD the files size limit is 4G. For MP4 set to UHD, or MP4 ( LPCM) or MOV there is no file size limit for SDXC cards ( they are formatted exFAT ) but of course there is for SDHC ( they are FAT 32 ). Just set my GH5 to check this so will report back later.

Got it... So it looks like in order for me to be able to do 420/8/ 100mbps, I have to switch the record format from MP4 to MP4(LPCM) Do you think that might make the difference in eliminating the 20 minute file length? Are you on LPCM at all times? Thanks! *EDIT* BTW, I just looked closer at files. They aren't 20 minutes. They're 28:24 each. 28 min 24 sec... Weird, no? *EDIT* Makes sense now. As Ron mentioned above. 4GB file size limit on the MP4 version I had selected. :)
