Problem with firestore.

Ok guys first let me say sorry if I posted this in the wrong section. I looked around but wasn't really sure where to post this.

My problem: I record using Firestore like many of you do on here, just on a canon instead of on a HVX200. I have posted a clip of what happens every now and then. Its kind of like skipped frames but I really don't know how to explain it. Please watch the whole clip and a few seconds into it you will see like a glitch while the couple are dancing.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks:dankk2:

I'm not familiar with the Canon gear or that model of Firestore so you may want to post this in the Canon section down below the HVX200 section.

Wish I could help.

Well contact FireStore and this is what they wrote back:

Hi Javibusa08,

I have some ideas that might have caused this problem. But first can you see the footage alright when playing back to the camera from the Firestore? If so then there is a problem importing it into your NLE system. If it still shows the skip then I would check the following.

1) Was the unit or camera moved while recording?
2) Have you tried different firewire cables?
3) Maybe the ports on the firestore or camera are going bad. This usually happens on the camera end. You might want to tie down the cable with velcro or use a right angle cable to help keep the cable from moving. I would try testing this by recording and moving the unit around.
4) Maybe there is a bad part on the hard drive that is causing this. But since it is happening on both and its a minor jump then I don't think its the hard drive but the ports or cables.

Thanks,
Joe

hey javibusa08.

I was thinking about getting the focus FS-4. but now I'm worry. Did you get more problems than the one you put up? has it happen again? have you been able to avoid it?

also I'm curious if other people have had the same problem.

Thanks.
Osmany

Well. I really have not had to many issues with it but it has not been an issue free product. Its very spoiled. If you don't follow a certain way of turning it on it wont record or it will reset on you. And when you stop recording you have to stop on the camera then stop on the drive (because after you stop on the camara the drive goes into this standby mode and you have to stop that if you are not going to record within a few minutes). Sometimes the drive wont respond to the camera so you have to start the recording by pressing the record button on the drive. Also sometimes when you go to stop the recording it freezes up and you need to hold down the on button and rest. The good thing it has is that it saves you a ton of time on the import part. You don't have to wait hours just to import the tape. Another con is that for canon it does not support 24p frame rate. just 1080i 60i and regular SD.

I had this happen when I was shooting aerials from a helicopter. The exact same thing was happening but it was more frequent, every 5 seconds. The footage was ruined and un-usable. It had something to do with the vibrations or the magnetic fields that a helicopter produces.

But it doesn't look like your firestore was moving around or anything so that's probably not it.

I encountered the problem in a major way 3 times when I recorded loud music. Never before or after out of the 100 or so of recordings I've done. So it seems to be a vibration problem that shakes the Firestore drive out of alignment or something, caused by loud music with lots of percussive peaks, extreme motion vibration, or something of that nature. I have since tried lightly wrapping the firestore in soundproof foam whenever a similar situation has arisen, and it seems to have fixed the problem. Firestore never admitted that this was the problem, although I tested every other option and didn't find a problem with cord, connections, etc.

I think you nailed it right on the head. Because that song they where dancing to had alot of bass. And during the ceremony I did not notice this problem at all. Where do you put the foam on the drive? And is there anyway you can post a picture so I can get an idea of what you are doing...Thanks a million...

I just lay a rectangular piece of soundproofing foam on top with a section carved out in the middle to fit the FS inside. Nothing fancy. I take it off whenever I can to prevent overheating.

For instant replay of the shot footage on a monitor, do you plug in the monitor to the camera OUT or an OUT on the Firsetore?

I just check the Firestore ProHD 60GIG specs and it lists that it can record in Quicktime 24P. Am I missing something here? According to this you can record in 24P.

DV: 480i/p, 8-bit 4:1:1 (NTSC-DV)

There are many different models of firestore. The one that is for CANON which is the FSc or something like that does NOT support 24p recording. I know because I own 2 of them. Now as for the firestore that works with the HVX I think that does support 24p. Not the one for canon.
