New P2 Log software for Macintosh users

What? Imagine want's me to alter my system so their software can work properly? Why don't they just write their software to work WITH the system rather than against it? Just not a smart way to engineer your software.

The Imagine 720p50 passthrough codec is a best effort component. We don't sell it. If you don't want to modify your system to get 720p50 support, then don't use it.

sweet is their anything else important I need to know ?
Will this conflict with apples codec or anything ?
Cheers

I purchased it and it runs very nicely on my MBP. I did notice what appears to be a glitch, when I'm playing a clip in the viewer and I stop it and then go to re-start it playing or scrub it or whatever it jumps back to the beginning of the clip.

That is expected behavior. Click the Play/Pause button to stop play, but stay in the same location.

So, if I understand correctly, I should install the 720p50 support codec, even if I don't use that format, and it'll correct the playback problems?

The Imagine passthrough codec accepts 720p frames (p60 or p50) and passes them through to the Apple DVCPROHD 720p60 codec, converting p50 frames on the fly to a format that the Apple codec understands (no active video information is lost in this process). Our component will (or should) only be called when working with files created with P2 Log or HD Log, but it will work with any DVCPROHD 720p file. We pass through every function that the Apple component implements and so no functionality is lost and no conflicts should occur. The core functionality of the passthrough codec is really rather simple, but it is the process of wrapping it up and trying to get it to work 100% with FCP and the rest of the DVCPROHD components that is the problem.

The additional DVCPROHD components provide extra capabilities that we haven't created passthrough components for. The Apple DVCPROHD video output component in particular, will bypass our passthrough component, which is why you have to move it outside the QuickTime folder to deactivate it. I'd like to eventually create the additional passthrough components, but what we have now will work well enough for viewing purposes. Will keep looking at it though, as time permits or until Apple comes out with official support.

The fast forward and fast rewind buttons set the movie playback rate to 5x, which won't work well, as you noted. The next update, which should be coming shortly, will scale it back to 3x max, with 2x, 1x, and 0.5x being the other options. Works better on my PowerBook. Thanks for pointing it out.

Not too thrilled with one thing about this...
AFTER paying for it, they tell you that it is only for one computer, and cannot be tranferred to another one.

"This product is sold as a single user, single computer product. It is not
transferable."

While the product is awesome, I do not agree with this concept for a piece of software that costs $100. For a $10 shareware program, sure. But for $100 I can't put it on my new Apple laptop when I get it to replace my desktop? Or when I replace my G5 with whatever newer one comes out later this year? I basically have to throw it away with my computer? That is completely ridiculous -- basically adding another automatic $100 to whatever system I decide to upgrade to.

Tell me that I'm not the only one who feels this way.

You would think they mean not transferable in the way of having it run on multiple computers at the same time. I would hope when I want to get a new computer I could "transfer" the license to another computer after I de-activate it from my old computer?
Still $99 is a small price to pay even if you had to buy one copy for your laptop and one for your desktop.

They have designed their software to work with the system rather than against it.

Computers are like cars, the internal relationships between parts are mechnical and simple - the only difference is computers have many orders of magnitude more relationships between components than an average car. So, if you are happy to drive your car around town and never give a thought to what is under the hood, great. However, if you want to charge across a desert in central asia riding a land cruiser, may I humbly suggest that you learn how to change tires, fix oil leaks, change coolant, reattach hoses, wire a bumper, etc.

It is the same with a computer. If you are going to rely on one to process and store your valuable data in the field, you had better be happy to COMPLETELY understand how it works, where things are, what things do, and what to do when it all goes wrong.

Well said Alex,
Is their a work around for the poor performance of clips playing back ?
I'm just getting a s,,s,s,s,stutter.

Ok a problem.

I have a big project shot using DVCPRO HD 1080/25p. I rerendered the project yesterday after having installed the Passthrough codec and suddently some of the Plug-in preview overlays was included in the rendered material:

Here it is the Four point garbadge-matte showing the points on the burned DVD :-(

would like to know if this is true. Applications are made for a single user not a single computer. This would be ridiculous if it's true.

I edit on my desktop but use my laptop in the field. If this is true why should i pay 200 bucks for p2 log.

Acctually no they haven't. And your comparison to cars is way off. After being an IT Engineer for 20 years, haveing worked with several big software companies, computers are nothing like cars, and nothing like being in a war zone.

They do have to write pass through patches for the method they are going about writting this software. They have not written all the patches for all the play back codecs yet. I'm not sure why they take this approach, but it is the one they take.

And now, as you see in a post here, removing that playback codec from the QuickTime library is causeing some redering problems with some plug ins. I'm having problems with two of my thrid party plugins ever since removing that playback codec. I put it back.

I'm VERY aware of how computers work and how software is written. And I'm questioning how this application is handeling it's tasks. I'm very not happy with my $100 for soft ware that requires I cripple my system so they can get smooth playback.

Not to mention removing that playback codec, and installing the 50p codec they have on their site does NOTHING to correct my playback problems in this application.

Yes, I know more about how your computer/car runs than you probably do, bud. But thanks for the grossly inaccurate comparison.

The P2 Log installer has been updated on our website with the following changes:
1. A P2 CONTENTS folder, or its containing folder, can be opened by dragging it onto the P2 Log application icon.
2. The video format and FPS is displayed in the lower right hand corner of the document window.
3. Field dominance is set to Upper and the pixel aspect is set to HD (960x720) inside FCP XML when you export 720p50 footage.
4. The fast forward and fast reverse controls are now limited to 3x max. Make the monitor window smaller to improve performance at faster speeds. P2 Footage on USB/FireWire/or other remote volumes is not guaranteed to playback at faster than playback speeds due to throughput limitations. USB throughput is especially limited in throughput on pre-Intel machines (and unusable on USB 1.1 machines, such as pre G5 PowerMacs), and so playback may stutter even at 1x speeds (http://www.barefeats.com/usb2.html). Copy files to a local or FireWire drive for best performance.
5. Open Recent has been added to the File menu.
6. When a document closes, its attached media will close (if open) to free up volumes for ejection.
7. When a document window closes, its size will now be automatically saved into a global preference.

Download the installer from the same place that you downloaded your original installer.

I would like clarification on this "single computer" thing as well. I was about to buy it, but I am running of a laptop in the field and a Desktop at home. Not being able for the program to be installed on both computers is kind of deal breaker for me. Also, I'll be updating my Desktop whenever the Intel Mac Towers come out, and I would hope I can transfer it over to that machine when it does. Let me know. I'm happy to buy the product if I can do this, but if I have to buy it twice right now, I think I'll rethink it.

If you don't have an HVX200E or a need to view DVCPRO HD 720p50 footage, then you don't need our 720p50 passthrough component. It is meant only to provide viewing support for 720p50, since Apple does not have a codec that will playback such footage. The component will NOT provide any benefits for users who are working with any other format. If you are working with DVCPRO HD 720p60, 1080i50, 1080i60, or any SD format, then you do NOT need the 720p50 passthrough codec. It will not improve playback performance for any format, as performance is limited by the connection type that your footage is being streamed through, as well as the speed of your computer.

To remove the component, go to your main hard disk -> Library -> QuickTime and drag the DVCPROHD720p50.component file to the trash (authenticate as necessary). Return the DVCPROHDVideoOutputCodec.component to the Library -> QuickTime folder, if you removed it, and you will be back to a stock installation.

I have dual 2.3GHz powerpc g5 with 3.5 GB ram and i'm getting verry stuttery playback. It's so bad it's not usable !
note - (looks like I was playing clips through the camera and should have been dumping then off first to get good playback)
