Problem offloading 64GB P2 card to external hard drive!!!

I experienced an issue attempting to offload 64GB P2 footage from the HVX200a to an external 1TB Hard Drive. I was able to format the drive (FAT32) in the camera, but when choosing the "Copy to HDD" command, the camera would start copying and get up to around 2%, but then there was an error message that stated "Cannot access target!". This only happens when I try to offload footage from the 64GB P2 card, I have no problems when offloading from a 16GB card.

I've tried referencing Mr. Green's HVX book, but could not find anything that documented this issue.

Any insight or recommendations (especially from Mr. Green) would be much appreciated.

That's not good. So your saying that it has nothing to do with the formatting, but rather the brand of hard drive? I was under the impression it had something to do with FAT32 file size limitations. I thought there had to be some issue with the creation of the partitions, as the P2's contents are being copied directly to the external hard drive. Again, I can copy the contents of my 16GB P2 card to the same Lacie drive with no issues, just not the 64GB card.

Just so we have the same reference; when transfering to an external HD (and not incorporating the use of a laptop as a type of "go-between" [if you will]), the camera will create a partition (equal to the size of the P2 card, regardless if the card is filled to capacity or not) on the external HD every time the transfer is implemented. So if at the end of a shoot I had (4) 16GB P2 cards I needed to transfer; when the camera has finished transferring the content to the external HD, I would have (4) separate 16GB partitions on that drive. (Sorry that was so long-winded)

So the anomaly I've been experiencing, I attributed to the 64GB P2 card. It's one of the new Eseries cards, whereas the 16GB card is an Rseries.

I really need to get to the bottom of this. I really hope it's not the series of P2 card I'm using.

yes, BRAND of drive CAN be a huge factor. the drive inside isnt usually the problem, its typically the firewire hardware interface of the enclosure. check any video forum and when you discuss drive failure, you will hear lacie and mybook more than any other brand/model.

i had two lacie drives a few years ago. both corrupted my data on contact.

im not saying this is absolutely whats happening in your situation. but id try a better brand of drive (maybe iomega or seagate) before moving on...

Thanks guys,

Our vendor found out that our camera needs a firmware upgrade. However, I will keep a mental note about the brand of hard drives we choose to procure. I'll post again when we upgrade the camera's firmware (Panasonic charges $100!!!), and let you know what happened. I really appreciate the responses.

i cant imagine your camera needing firmware to TRANSFER footage...? i can believe it would need firmware to use the 64 gig card, but not transfer from it. that doesnt really make sense
