Pricing F5 F55

CVP now reporting a price of 19000 pounds +vat... that's quite a lot cheaper than the prices posted above.

I'd assume around a $32,000-33,000 street price for the 55, body only. Hard price to sell that at, I think. Unfortunate.

CVP saying 30.000 dollars without VAT.

Creative Ventures is sticking it at 22.000 Euro for the moment, maybe now is the time to move before they roll the price up?

Which is about 6-8000 usd more than what it needs to be for most owners. $30K+ for body only is hard to return the investment on. Rental companies will like it I guess. Maybe the footage will be extraordinary.

I'm still comparing numbers between Euro, £, and I think there's still hope for a F55 around $27K USD

I won't cry if the F5 is the only one within my budget, because it means I can likely swing the AXS then as well.

We'll see in the (US) morning, I suppose.

If those are the numbers and close to the converted usd, I might say forget it and I'll stick with RED and pay for the Dragon update instead. Thats a bit more than I was hoping for for the F55. Unless it turns into the next "Alexa" craze I'd be hard pressed to spend $30K USD on the body if it wont have clients really wanting it over what I already own.

It would be great if these new cameras didn't have that "Sony look" or rather had a new type of Sony look. I like my EX3, but all the Sony cameras have that same look and they are not very organic. For the EX3, a small sensor camera, it's fine I guess. But for their S35 cameras which are directed at cinema production I expected a more organic and less electronic look. But the FS100, FS700 and F3 still look the same. This is the reason I passed on them. Even the F23 has that look. I hated how Public Enemies looked like and pretty much any other show shot on Sony. It makes all look like a made for TV movie in my opinion. I guess this is why it works for TV shows like Dexter. But for cinema I just don't like that look. You look at Ben Button shot with the old Viper and it looks miles better. This is where RED and the Alexa win. So I hope the F5 and F55 will bring something new to the table in terms of a more organic look and a less electronic robotic look.

First thing is first, it's the DP who makes or breaks the footage, not the camera. I've owned the F3 for a while and it shoots very filmic footage and theres no "video look" to it at all, specially talking about the F35.

Public Enemies was shot with shutter angles that were exadurated for that look, and I agree it sucks, but that had nothing to do with the camera, that was the DP's fault and they should have never gone with that look. Do no base 1 crappy movie on what a camera system can do. I'd bet you a lot of money that you've seen F3 and F35 footage that you most likely thought was film or another camera. The F35 has been on everything. There is no video look about it at all.

What you're seeing is the lack of common sense with some DP's, thinking its ok to go to a 360 degree shutter, which then makes things look horrible videoish, but this can be achieved with most digital cinema cameras now, and it will dive you the same effect. Also the difference between 24P and 30P might be what you're seeing on some sony gigs too. Some producers (I have NO IDEA WHY) still force projects to be 30P instead of 24P, giving you a "video" look.

I assure you its not the camera, the F3 with S-Log is the closest thing to the Alexa as you can get till now.

Now I have never used the F3 in S-log. But in normal mode it looks basically or exactly like a large sensor EX1/EX3 as do the FS100 and FS700.
I know, I have had an EX3 for years now and it's a great camera.

I also have to disagree with the notion that it's not the camera but the DP. Sure, to an extent. Put a great camera in the hands of an incompetent shooter and nothing good will come out of it. But at the same time, the different digital cameras of today are like film stocks. They all have a backed in look and you can somehow get away from it a bit, but not totally. Otherwise matching different cameras for inter-cutting would be a walk in the park and yet it isn't. I just dislike the Sony look for drama. It's my personal opinion and I understand you may have yours. But although I have never used the F3 in S-log, I have seen footage and close to Alexa it is not.

Hi,
sad that the F55 is so much more expensive..
for 6k more it would have flown off the shelves, but not for 12k more than the f5 i think ...
so i'll stick to my wonderful F3, for the F5 isn't worth the extra money to me...
not in this climate of "every half year we bring you the new next best camera" thing that's going on right now ;-)

But for new buyers the F5 seems to make more sense than the F3 since the price difference seems to be small.

About the F55 pricing, the camera is clearly aimed at the Alexa market. Have you seen how much that camera costs? Sony can't shoot themselves in the foot.

Don't forget we get ripped off bad in the UK. If these figures are UK prices, the US ones tend to be a fair chunk cheaper... Go on CVP and compare, say, a Sony FS700 price to your US equivalent

True that. Hence the reason I will be flying to the US to buy my F55...:)

Haha oh... more "maybe" prices, just give us the USDs already Sony! ... You know, the currency 90% of people will actually be buying these with?

As any sensible person would; if you have a large enough shopping list, you can easily get a free flight's worth of savings and more even. Hardware of this level is expected to have worldwide support, so no reason not to take a week-off trip to NY and buy a sweet camera to try out on the spot as well.

The CVP Price on the F5 is really quite tempting... £10.5k + VAT that's very attractive positioning. I'll stick to the 700 i have to see what happens to the RAW recorder there but perhaps for next year (once it's out in the wild and put through it's paces). However good street price. Interested to see what the US version would be.

cheers
Paul

I'm thinking of how the partially let loose the F3 prices, we all said they were too high, then they dropped the prices in the US and elsewhere when we complained.

I know they haven't released US prices or street prices yet, but the F55 seems way too high. At $6k higher as a couple people estimated it was a no brainer. At $12k higher its not something I can even consider.

For the fully outfitted current F3 owner with recorder and paid S-Log the F5 isn't that much of an advantage. 2k, meh. 4k, meh. It was a global shutter and color gamut that was lighting my fires.

It would still be interesting to see if they give paid S-Log owners any usable break.

Without a significant difference who would buy the F5? The pricing structure does make sesnse, despite the fact I'm sure we would all love it for free.

Also don't forget the feature list of the F55 - not many cameras pack this much punch for anywhere close to the price.

Of course a significant difference is necessary. It's a matter of degree. (And no one is asking for it for free.) I'm just saying the delay on releasing prices may be because they are still debating pricing internally, and they'll see how we react. My opinion matches that of a few others here that the F55 is too high. Sony has never quite understood the popularity factor.

Red made themselves popular, in part by promising cheaper cameras. When popular camera people talk about he camera to non-camera people, who will then ask for it because they've heard of the camera. Sony started teasing their products a little more like Red. They still have a ways to go with understanding popularity.
