Price on Sony F5 and F55 After the Red Price Drop

I have a feeling I'm going to feel like a doofus when pricing is out and I see this table I made (and it's all wrong, and not by a little), but whatever, it's a little fun to guess.

I have a strong feeling the F55 will be about 35K, F5 about 22k.

The F5 recording being around 9k + media, and the RAW recorder for the F55 about 13-18K + media.

What do you figure will be included in the price? I see there are different EVF options, and other things, do you think those will be bundled with the pricing you are guessing? Or is this a 'body only' pricing guess?

Unless the F3 and the FS700 migrate forward in terms of firmware and specs, the gap is going to be very great between the F3 and the F5.
There is a reason there is no F4, and I want to know what it is. Certainly this would reflect a perceived quality leap from the two cameras.
The real question is if Sony is going to phase out or update the F3 to close the gap a little.
If they phase it out, then certainly the F5 is going to drop in price to recover that market.
If that is the intended strategy then I see it around 18K right now.

I honestly never believed that any camera could last in the market for over 5 years, but the RED ONE MX did it, and now looks like it will be the F55. I mean seriously, after that, what's next?

You must have a short memory. My Arri 35-3 was viable for 20+ years.

Short cinema camera lifespan is a new phenomenon.

all very good posts here.....I have to wonder if wonder if Sony is monitoring this and other forums to see what we'd like the pricing to be then what we would tolerate to move up from the F3?
Also did I read / hear somewhere that the F3 will still be kept in the current product line-up?

Nothing.....Isn't that the truth?......I'm still holding on to my Aaton Xtera and A-Minima kits....and why not? It isn't as if they're worth selling now anyway.
Rather like our F3's in six months time when the F5/55's will be all over the place.

Did you keep your 35-3? I loved operating that camera.

Yeah I still have it - and it's working on a music video this week :)

Good to know.......I also still use the Aatons whenever possible, some 10K ft through the Xtera this year. Not like the old days but with a good transfer/colourist it's still hard to beat.

SONY,
Soon, Only Not Yet

LOL. But then RED should be Really Exciting (but) Delayed (by years).

and you can't really say the Red lasted 5 years. It was still in development the first three years and revamped the last two years.

Its sad the F3 now feels somewhat obsolete. But its a perception, not a fact. I'm hoping the v1.5 firmware does something exciting.

I was at a conversation with Bonnie Curtis the producer of Jurasic Park, Albert Nobb, etc at AFM. She said she shot her last two movies on the Alexa and is never going back to film. I still think of my F3 as a baby Alexa.

[Edit: She also had used the Red in the past and plans on sticking with the Alexa. Resolution wasn't a consideration.]

I want it to succeed. The nice thing is when you tell buyers you shot on the Sony F3 they don't dismiss you as not knowing what you're doing.

Four is an unlucky number in Japanese.

My guesses:

I think this a good guess... can't remember who said it earlier or in another thread.. I think Sony will be pushing 4k... think of it this way... i-sony.... they'll make more profit in the long run with consumers than us filmmakers... but who knows I've been wrong before... lol

I have strong feeling I will not be owning the F55 in place of my F3 and RED Scarlet, which perhaps I'm better off sticking with.

I'm talking about digital video based cameras mostly, I've owned 8-9 already in 10 years. But I change them regularly and probably more often then most.

With respect, she'll shoot with whatever camera Stephen Spielberg chooses...

She hasn't been working for Spielberg for quite awhile. She's completely on her own now, so it's her choice (along with the DP) depending on what the script requires. The latest is "5 to 7" a romance with some comedy. The Alexa's handling of skin tones is perfect for that.

Remember Nikon F4? No "death" there...
Sony says the F3 is staying in the product line.

Its called tetraphobia.

In Japanese (and Chinese), "shi"(si) means death, 4 can be read as 'shi'. The number 4 in any combination can be considered very unlucky in many parts of Asian, its not infrequent that an elevator would be missing just the fourth floor but the floors 40-49 (as well as 13). In extreme cases, all 4s are skipped in elevators. In some cases you could be on the '50th' floor but actually really be on the 35th.

However, for Japanese, F4 would actually be read "F-yon". Hence, there is no real connections with 'death' or unluckiness in Japanese. Japan, for the most part, isn't that superstitious with numbers like many other Asian countries. So Nikon just went ahead and called their camera the "F4", as well as the more recent "D40", "D4000" and "D4".

For Sony, being that its just a name, its probably a smarter business move to just skip the "4" all together. Since the F55 would probably be called the F44, and be "F-die-die" in some countries, its best avoided.
