Price drop on the AF100. Could this be the end of the line?

The end of one line is the beginning of a new line?
i really WANT to use my AF100, but my GH4 with is superior image is chosen 9 out of 10 times.
Dear Panasonic, I would pay good money for a retro fit processor. I don't shoot 4K.

It's a few years old and still one of the most underrated, internet maligned, misunderstood, unappreciated, finest skin tones, excellent cameras I have ever shot with. I just finished shooting a doc with mine. My client is over the moon with the results. I'm upgrading, as I need to but as long as people are taking HD deliverables, I will keep my AF100. It's a bargain and if you have projects accepting deliverables of HD 4:2:0 8bit AVCHD, and be reasonable, there are many of them, then you should grab it up!

My crystal ball is covered by tea leaves ... but the new "high end" MFT camera/AF-100 replacement has been bandied about for a very long time. (and in its own thread too) NAB'15 seems like a good time for introducing a new model.

BTW, what's interesting is that, aside those 50 MPX Canon 5DS models and the Olympus EM 5 MK II, there's really not been any major announcements coming out of the CP+. Maybe everything will pour out at the NAB in two month time.

A thousand-dollar price drop two months before NAB practically telegraphs an AF-200 (okay, just $900 off).

You forgot ugliest and fattest ;) No seriously, I think size, shape, and style affect sales, no matter how much the no-nonsense, workaday cameramen say "just give me a box." But speaking of telegraphing, there are a thousand threads (okay, just 900) pleading for a lensless PX270 with the heart of a GH4. If Panasonic fails to deliver at least that, then it's on them.

Meanwhile, Blackmagic will introduce another camera with a fine picture and a nice price but in the shape of an elephant.

Yup, all of this and the fact that you can easily sync multiple A100's. I already have two in the studio, I may be able to get a third one at these prices . It's just a crazy-good workhorse. I love the IQ from my Blackmagic cameras, but man do they make me miss the AF100's functionality when I use them!

Quite a deal, especially with the prices used ones are selling for ($900-$1500 depending on accessories). I shot a feature with one a few years back and other than dealing with highlights was very happy with it. Love the Panasonic "out of the box" profiles, all they need is a bit of tweaking.

The years of Panasonic camera development that evolved into the on camera switch/button/wheel/audio layout, built in NDs, the video menu options and exposure tools on the AF100 give it a usability that represents a kind of high water mark for functionality in a "baked in" image camera.

I keep trying to hate my AF so I can justify a new camera like all the cool kids, but the damn thing just keeps performing

There is quite a difference between "a reliable source, known to me, but who wishes to remain anonymous" and just "an anonymous source". Looking at that 43rumors website, I get the impression that the rumor is from just "an anonymous source". Anyone have more info about that source?
(BTW, I do hope the rumor is true, but I don't want to get up false hopes.)

Most of these rumor sites have an individual rumor ranking, from the most to the least legitimate. The "most" usually goes to an old source, who's been right in the past. The "least" goes to a new/unknown source. Often, site owners won't publish rumors that seem too outlandish (and there are a ton of those) and will try to verify them with those correspondents whom they had known for a while.

One assumes that the manufacturers themselves create those rumors when it's advantageous to them. In other words, if a company X needs to clear off a substantial amount of inventory or milk an existing cash cow, it will sign own employees and/or independent testers to the fairly stringent non-disclosure agreements and keep mum on what they have in store. When they want to play a few tricks with a competitor, they may do just the opposite.

What happens frequently is that a rumor will hint at the rough outline of a camera but the exact specs will only be known on an official release date, so what you think a particular model will have, it may not ... but the rumor itself will be seventy five percent or so accurate.

There's a post (sorry, tried but couldn't find it) where Barry had some communication with the consumer group at Panasonic about a camera to replace the AF100. I would find that less of a successor but may prove to be the right thing for a lot of shooters. I had hoped that the next one, probably more near the $8K range near Cion and PS7, would have been in the professional group, deriving sensor tech from the Varicam. However, I do not really think that's what is happening, only what I wish would happen.

I have saved the dough, I'm upgrading. I have projects in the spring. The upgrade paths are so different now and none include Panasonic. Just a huge gaping chasm between the GH4 and the Varicam.

Yes, thanks DLD, that's the one. That chopped HCX1000 looks like it would be a heck of a camera for many purposes.
