Preliminary results with IndieHardware stabilizer

My IndieHardware stabilizer arrived yesterday. This is the link to the mfg. page:

After about an hour of attempting to get the stabilizer set up properly sent the following email to the company:

Today I received my stabilizer which I want to use with my Panasonic GH1 still/video camera. The GH1 with lens weighs just under 2 lbs, so I thought your stabilizer would work OK with it.

What I found out is that I can only achieve the correct balance by including all the stabilizer weights and by clipping on a small Vise-Grip pliers to the weight knob, with the Vise-Grip handles extending down the length of the balance arm.

This tells me I need either a longer balance arm or heavier weights, or both. So I'm wondering if you can provide me with some heavier weights and/or a longer piece of aluminum to which the weights are attached. I really don't want to return the unit to you, but I also can't use it with the darned Vice-Grip attached.

Thanks.

I'll post updates here as they develop.

Well I did make some test shots last night with the rig slightly off balance. Even though the camera was tilted and had a bit of a swing to it the resulting video was much better than straight hand-held. What I think I'll do is put up a web page with all the results and what I did to get them. I'll include photos of the rig (including with the Vice-Grip attached) and sample videos that will (hopefully) show improved performance.

One thing that I can say now is the rig is very sensitive to where the camera is placed. Just moving it fwd/back 1/8" makes a huge difference when you are close to the proper balance point. I reckon this is not new news to people who knwo about stabilizers.
