Predators..... Robert Rodriguez

Seems Mr. Rodriguez is supposed to be doing a new Predator film. He is calling it a reboot and not a direct sequel.

Thank goodness they've decided to do this instead of an Alien vs. Predator 3.

As a big fan of the original Predator, I hope this is treated right if it actually gets made. Concept sounds cool. Now.... where is an Alien/Aliens reboot? That would make me pee my pants. :2vrolijk_08:

I hereby propose that the next Hollywood person to use the term "reboot" gets instantly shot.

There is absolutely no reason that the Predator franchise needs to be "rebooted." You wanna make a Predator movie, Bob? Fine, go right ahead. But considering there's only two frickin' movies so far, and the last one was, what, fifteen years ago? Why the hell does it have to be a "reboot?" What's wrong with a sequel?

I agree on the overuse of the whole reboot/re-imagining lingo that Hollywood uses these days. I guess they think it glosses over the fact that they're doing a sequel or a remake, and that people will think they are doing something radically different. The problem I have with it isn't so much the actual word, but that there are so many darn reboots and remakes these days that the fad has worn thinner than cheap toilet paper.

This Predators concept that Rodriguez has actually sounds more like a sequel than a "reboot" anyways. Either way the concept of having the Predators abduct a bunch of worthy adversaries and dumping them on a jungle planet, then hunting them is a pretty good idea for this. It could be similar to the first film, but very different at the same time.

As for the Alien series, I only mentioned the r-word because that franchise actually needs a complete start over, sorta like Star Trek is doing now. Not necessarily remaking the first film with someone else playing Ripley, but they need new characters that are not familiar with the Aliens. Otherwise it is not as mysterious and terrifying for the audience if the main characters are already in a "been there done that" mindset.

Again, I'm not a huge fan of the endless remakes Hollywood does now, but in terms of the Alien and Predator films, after AvP parts one and two, they owe the fans of the originals an apology in the form of a good Predator and Aliens sequel/reboot/re-imagining or whatever they want to call it.

The Alien vs. Predator movies never happened. They don't exist. These are not the droids I'm looking for...

I hadn't read the entire article until now, just a couple of excerpts here and there on different sites, and quite frankly it only proves my point even more. Rodriguez had an interesting idea for a sequel, and some studio douchebag finds it twenty years later and says, "oh, this would a great 're-imagining'" for us. Have these idiots forgotten that there even is a word "sequel" in the English language?

(Obviously I won't be working for this guy at Fox anytime soon... :) )

I think this "idiot" is just using the hot catchphrase of the moment without thinking. The Predator franchise isn't really continuous. They are just individual stories revolving around an alien species. Each movie is a reboot in a sense, so RR's approach really would change nothing. As long as you still have dreadlocked aliens hunting humans then it's a Predator movie, and as far as I know, RR will not change that. That's fine with me. I'm really not interested in the continuing saga of Schwarzenegger's Dutch or Danny Glover's cop character. Their stories are done.

Neither will I by the way I've torn into them about AvP 1&2, which you are right, don't exist. I'd even say the same about Alien Resurrection. Alien 3 was the last one for me.

The next thing they'll come up with is some sort of mash up of a sequel and a remake, a requel.

I really hope they don't have Predators with all kinds of crazy alternate hairstyles like fros, perms, mohawks, and jerry curls.

Yep, Dutch's story and Glover's ended with each of the two films. I don't think the premise would work for a third one if they had a character that had encountered the Predators before. Part of the fun is seeing a new character discovering the Predator's capabilities, finding its weaknesses, and then killing it.

Sounds like a disaster in the making unless it has a small $15 million budget or less so Weinstien can recoupe via dvd sales.

Huh?...Anything with the Predator name on it makes cash. Even that last piece of garbage made 128 million worldwide. And while I think RR is overrated as a filmmaker I'm pretty sure he can make something better than AVP2.

I don't know, it could be a turd or it might be amazing. Certainly the concept of taking some human warriors and some other types of alien warriors and dropping them into an alien jungle to be bait for some Predators has some potential to be good sci-fi action flick.

Although, they have to be careful as it easily could slip into Alien vs. Predator lameness if they don't have a good story and neglect to develop both the human and other alien characters.

Not to go all textspeak on you here, but I literally LOL'd at that one. :D Technically, Abrams' Star Trek could be called a requel...

Wasn't Gary Busey's character in P2 originally supposed to be Ahnold's Dutch?

But you're right, when I say "sequel" I don't need (or want) to see the same characters again. I just don't need (or want) to see the slate wiped clean and have it like the first two never happened. Although... while you're right that part of the fun is seeing the new character, I also think that you could make a good movie showing a human who's accepted by the Predators and "hunts" with them. Not with one of the existing characters (although you could almost do it with Glover's character), but as part of a larger arc. You introduce the character in P3, run him/her through the usual scenario, and then take it in a different direction in P4.

Hmm, if they haven't found a writer for this yet.. Anybody know the number of a good agent? :)

I think RR will knock this out of the park :)

Based on what?...I think RR's film output has been pretty piss poor actually. Sin City is the only film of his that is worth a damn. I think he's more notable for being an inspiration to independent filmmakers than he is for the quality of his actual films.

I'm a big RR fan... :D

Do you really think most of his films are good? Or are you more a fan of RR the myth...the rebel without a crew?...I can understand that. I just can't see how anyone would think his films (other than Sin City) are anything more than juvenile and cheap entertainment.

juvenile. cheap entertainment....

what's wrong with that? :D

I just think his reputation far exceeds the quality of his work. As a director he is competent and occasionally inspired. As a writer he is sloppy, amateurish and juvenile.

I agree, I think RR is a great indie but on a Hollywood feature standard in a world of $125+ million dollar budgets he is out of his league, WAY OUT OF HIS LEAGUE. Even on $30 million budgets.

RR should be doing $10 million dollar and under straight to dvd movies and if he gets lucky (won't happen) and turns out the next Pulp Fiction they will throw it up on the big screen. He is far from being a Danny Boyle type director. However he is a great indie and an idol to most wanna be film makers.
