C200: Preamp Noise...

Can anyone please confirm if their audio pre-amps are abnormally noisy? I'm getting a constant hiss at all levels but gets really pronounced over 5 gain. I've tried different xlr cables to no avail on inputs 1 and 2. Also tried trimming the levels in the menu to -6. BTW: this is using phantom power with a rode NTG3.

Thanks in advance

I don't have that mic, but I can test with an audio technica at897.

I would suggest trying a different mic to see if it is a mic issue. I've had problems with the NTG-3 on other systems. My guess is that it requires more amps than some other mics and I've had problems with P48 on other systems.

Hey I recorded a test for you at 6 gain on XLR1. Sounds pretty clean to me.

Here's one at 3, which was the right level for my living room.

You maybe be correct and I'll test with a few different ones this week.

It seems I'm experiencing the same issue with P48 and the rode as I've tried using a Senn MKH-416 and MKE-600 that do not exhibit the same issues.

Are there any settings on those mics you're having issues with like phantom power or any kind of signal cut/boost?

Had similar problems with my Rode NTG-3 on my C100. A light buzzing that would come and go when monitoring audio through headphones. The buzz never manifested itself in the actual recorded audio. Might want to see if you can hear it on playback. If not, it's just going to be an annoyance.

On the NTG3 there isn't any options for cut or boost. On the NTG2 I hear the same hiss on P48 but when I use a AA battery with that mic it goes away completely. :)

It's definitely in the recording with a constant high frequency hiss around the 1k hz mark.

I didn't have a problem with the NTG-3 on my C100 and I regularly used it as a camera mounted mic. I have had a problem with an external battery power P48 power supply and a Lectrosonics HMa. I read of some other people having issues as well. It would be unfortunate if the internal XLR on the C200 couldn't handle the mic.

i have a hiss as well. I bought this mic just for the c200, so I will have to return it. Any other mic recommendations are welcomed!

Edit: @Tcap, I am looking at the Senn MKH-416, did you say that you tested that with the c200 and had no hiss?

sanken CS-1 is the one i would go for if you are on a budget, at $850, if you have more money to spend, sanken CS-3 is hands down better than senn416, the noise rejection is superb be it indoors or outdoors!

second that the sanken cs3 is great doesn't suffer from the tone colour changing when the subject is moving closer to camera.
i alternate between the sanken and a shoeps mk41

Some questions as I've never heard of that mic. Has anybody tested it with the c200? I want to obviously avoid that hiss, since this is the main reason for a new mic. Also, does it come with a foam cover like the rode?
