Post nuclear short finished!

Komeata kuvaa, vaikkakin vähän sisällötöntä elokuvaa.

I wanna see what you can do with your coming 35mm adapter!

Thanks my fellow user, I will receive my go35pro just before christmas and will use it in the next episode!

Very cool short, nice job of creating a 'world' that seems to stand on it's own. At first, I was worried because it felt very similar to a short I'm working on but once we got a little further into the film, I saw some major differences from my project and this one. I almost thought I had to scrap my project for a moment! :)

Visuals are the key for me, they're your most engaging aspect and the most professional element. Acting wise, so-so, not bad or anything, but not great. I'd like to see more story in future episodes and I'm definitely looking forward to the winter one. I love the end credits with the drawings/sketches, another small touch that further personalizes and makes this a more memorable short film.

You've got some good shots there and an interesting premise as well. Great sound design too. The editing could've been better though.

Some examples I can remember off the top of my head is the cut to the close up of the lead at the start which was very jarring and the suspense of the "villian" sneaking up on him could've been built up better.

Your images definitely look good but you could use a little shallow depth of field in certain shots. Since you're getting an adapter for your next shoot, I believe that should not be a problem in future!

Nice use of CG but I think you should not have made the sky cloudless. Still looks unreal for me but that's just personal preference!

Luzer: you have got some good points there. The editing could definitely be improved as you said and what comes to the dof, the go35pro will give me those possibilities.

Geoff R: The plot was very simple because this was some kind of a test for this post nuclear theme, I mean we wanted to test if anyone is interested in seeing this kind of stuff more. So now we really have to concentrate on the story. By the way, great images and lighting on your short "Cárcel". I liked the short much.

Thanks again for the comments, I really appreciate them. All these aspects discussed will be observed before making the next short.

Is there any way to save this file to watch it again and again?

No not this flash version of the movie I quess, but I can compress an good quality wmv-file for you and others who want to save it on hard disk. I'm not home at the moment, but will do it 21.12 when I get back. So check out the same thread again then!

ellegrand, you could always just do it yourself by downloading the .flv file and converting it in any number of applications that can convert flash to video.

Here's the .flv:

(badlaa, I hope you don't mind me posting this... just trying to help.)

NickC: thats ok, but the wmv-file will give you better full screen image quality.

Very interesting visuals. Good design, props, etc. Some of the close-ups bothered me though, especially the first one. I'm not sure if it was the acting or what.

Also, I think the sound design needed a lot more bass and atmospheric sounds. A lot of the shots in the beginning just had that tinny sound of the knife and plates. I felt that it needed more sound across the entire frequency range. The first shot was decent, but most of the background sounds dropped out with the first cut. There were some sounds around the time he sticks his knife into the food and starts to eat it that I couldn't make sense of. It sounded intentional, but I didn't like it. It sounded almost like the sound of wind against the microphone, or something rubbing against the microphone.

It was good that you added in more texture later when the bad guy comes in, but to me the sound was more erie than brutal. I think the sounds of your film should be deep and give a feeling of hardess and violence to that world. I liked the thought behind that horn sound of that approaching ship, but that sound needs to be a terrifying, booming sound that literally shakes the audience in its boots.

I liked that creaking sound in that shot after the protagonist gets up after seeing the flying ship, the one that's all black. That might be the only time I thought one of your sound fx really had the depth it should have had, though the guys footsteps in the shots that follow sound much too hollow and wood like for the concrete and rocks he's walking on.

Also, when the music first comes in, it sounds to me like it is overmodulating...it's short and feels out of place, considering how in arguably more dramatic parts of your film, like the fight and the choking part there isn't any music.

I really liked the props and set though.

Haha so what ever happened to this? Did this project just die? Whatever happened to the winter episode?
I can't believe people are nitpicking over tiny unimportant things about this. This is literally some of the most amazing footage i have ever seen on the DVX. I have yet to see anything that can match it's video quality (for dvx).

Please, please, please continue with this project!

I think panasonic accidentally made an HD dvx100b

Yeah me too, very hard to believe this is DVX. I've seen one other short with this quality claim to be DVX. Was a boxing short, anyone know which one I'm talking about? Wish my DVX looked this good.

STYLZ: can u pm me this video?

Hey guys, i couldn't resist, the key in the sky was TO perfect, so i had to test out the magic eraser in photoshop. I CCed the pics a little to

Here one:

Believe it or not folks, this is what DVX footage looks like when it's properly exposed and focused.

His camera does have 20% more vertical resolution, being in PAL land, but resolution is only one part of the equation. You can get just as good an image from your DVX. HD won't help you - if your DVX footage looks like garbage, you won't be able to get any better a result from an HVX or other higher res camera. But follow the basics and your DVX footage will look start to look as good as Badlaa's.

Even distance shots looked crisp, when i do that with my dvx, its not great quality. Like close ups are really good for me but when i shoot something farther away, its not as crisp

His wide shots weren't that wide. But you're right, the DVX is not going to deliver perfectly crisp landscapes. That's pushing its resolution capabilities to the limit. All the same, make sure you're zooming all the way in to grab focus, then re-framing your shot.

But yeah, closeups are always going to look sharper than wides with the DVX and other SD cameras.

I've seen hundreds if not thousands of DVX clips and shorts, none this good. So are you suggesting all those other clips are out of focus and improperly exposed? Their creators inept and incapable? I'll attribute it to the 20% more vertical resolution.
