GH4 Possible Fix to this Magenta blocking crap

Alright. Shian said something in another thread that got me thinking. He said, "What were your settings before Vlog". So I decided to try something on my own.

I went in and reset the camera. A full reset with version 2.3 FW. Then went back into the app and reloaded Vlog. I'm not sure but I've seen a DRAMATIC improvement to the files internally. When I first loaded the Vlog, it was just plopped into the camera with all my previous settings saved. After a total reset of the camera, I'm kinda gonna say it works. Very faint magenta blocking, but as others have said, no more or no less than in other profiles like CineD.

So give this a try and confirm if you see it in your cameras or if I'm just crazy.

1:Reset camera completely
2:reload VLOG

Also, I'm also trying just working with the images native without transcoding.
my luminance shows in greyed out 0-255.

GIVE IT A TRY!

(A public apology to Shian here. Lets just get to the bottom of this VLOG).

Good luck guys! I might get back to GH4 again if you'll nail it! (could be a nice b-cam for fs7, anyone that is intercutting it give us a shout!)

Since I've done this I'm getting result that I would expect out of the Gh4 and a LOG profile. No more random weird magenta blocking.

@dustylense, So do a full factory reset, with v2.3 firmware, then reload v-log? Just make sure I understand.
Yes.

Just go in the menu and reset the entire camera. Then launch app and reload VLOG.

@ RedChalice. I don't know man. I did it and for some reason I'm seeing better results. Which is why I'm asking others to do it to see if in fact there was/is an improvement for others.

I'll try this tomorrow. When I can shoot the same stuff that has been causing problems. Man, I hope this helps...but I gotta admit I'm pretty skeptical.

Well I'm not saying the blocking is completely gone. I'm seeing an improvement in my camera of things I've shot earlier that now look useable.

Will do this tomorrow for completeness' sakes, but given that I have watched internal VLog tests from pre-release cameras that show the same YUV chroma smearing problems, I'm skeptical too....

Off to bed now!

Cheers from Berlin,

Paul :)

I am seeing an improvement. Under the worst case it's still visible but not as bad, at the point of being correctable.

i dont understand, what would previous camera settings have anything to do with performance of v log?

It's called hysteresis. The GH2 and GH3 both had this problem as well but it manifested in a couple of other areas. Like changing ISO while shooting on the GH3 would create a ton of white noise, but if you did the same move while not rolling, it wouldn't. The GH2 would sometimes say it was changing your lens's aperture while shooting, but the exposure wouldn't change unless you stopped the roll and changed it while not rolling. When we were hacking the GH2 it was absolutely necessary to do a global reset on the GH2 before installing certain firmware versions otherwise you'd get macro blocking and heavy noise where there should be none.

So... if I have FW 2.4 and have properly activated V-LOG L, will factory reset erase V-LOG from my camera? Will I be able to re-activate you think?

Hmm. I'm not sure. I'd say no, but this whole "activate" function is so new I have no experience with it. You'd have to ask a Panny rep. It used to be you had to do the reset BEFORE installing the firmware. But if you experienced results that didn't match what the patch was supposed to do, you could just reset the camera and it'd fix it.

Okay. To be honest I've not tested the V-LOG L footage since doing the upversion this morning. I had a half-thought that I should do a factory reset and promptly spaced it. Argh. I sent a tweet to Lumix, let's see what they say.

I would think so, If you have the paid version from Panasonic with FW 2.4, There's no reason you shouldn't be able to do a factory reset. If in fact it did vanish from the menus it would be a bigger fail than the screw up earlier in the week.

All the same, I'm going to wait until I hear from LUMIX! Haha. I can work with V-LOG as it is now thanks to FilmConvert - would suck to lose it altogether. Panasonic doesn't inspire the greatest confidence in things going as they should lately! Haha.

tried it. rolled test clips in 8 bit internal and 10 bit external before and after the reset. no meaningful change here. maybe less magenta and more cyan now, if anything.

But you don´t get maximum from FC, because they haven´t released the Vlog profile, or have they?
