But anyways, looks like this thread turned into a mac request more than a hvx support poll.. they should look at this and think about doing the port.
What kind of software on a PC even supports DVCProHD at the FCP level with variable framerates, 1080p, etc.?
The writing is on the wall. They should port this over to Mac...

A DVCPRO-HD version should give us full-screen real-time full-resolution pixel-accurate monitoring, waveform, vectorscope, quality assurance, /URL].

Hmmm....wouldn't you need one hell of a laptop to fit both a pixel-accurate monitor, a waveform, a vectorscope and a quality assurance box and other panes onto the LCD scrren?

Hey Barry Green!
Can I put a DVRack on this little guy?

Might run for DV mode, but definitely not HD or HDV. I think the screen's too small too, I think DV Rack requires 1024 wide and the ogo's only 800 wide.

Do you guys remember when a few years ago AVID announced they were not supporting Mac anymore. Then 3 days later the biggest BackPadde in video history making up all kinds of BS to cover the 4 thousand Mac Seats they already sold.

I wish FCP did do real-time scopes ... even on ingest. They don't even do realtime Timecode readout. Hmmmm .... Dell sound good right now ... Oh, where's that soap !!!

Serious lame is a better name for their company.
FCP does do real time scopes...but only with hardware cards though....

FCP has avids number...especially with multicam support and being cost effective.

I've thought seriously of getting a PC laptop for Serious Magic DV Rack and Ultra. Wouldn't you need a least a 3 gigger CPU (more like a 3.4 intel or 3.0 AMD chipset) to be able to capture HD? If that is the case, you looking at about $2,500 to $3,000 as an addition to whatever else you use as a tool. I edit on a Mac, so, it's an added expense on top of the camera. That's a whole lot for me at this juncture, so, I'll wait and see what comes out of the hopper!

In several emails to Serious Magic about this, they said that they very much want to do this, but that there are some serious technical problems that will probably hold them up for a while (longer than any of us want)>

Anders, take a Powerbook and attach a second monitor to it via DVI, could even be a 30" Cinema Display. Hey, it works, technically speaking. However, this is no comment as to whether such a setup really makes sense.

Ah, BTW, I am also on a Mac and would love to have a Mac version:-)
Unless FCP6 includes those features - hopefully.

Best, Pe.

dv rack 100 arf carse

dv rack 100 arf carse

yess, even as a mac user i've set a pc laprop aside just for that purpose, can't wait to see the sw ready.... or to use a hvx in the real world:cry:
best, soren

I don't even have a Mac right now (although I plan to get one specifically to use FCP with the HVX200) - and the attitude of the Serious Magic people towards Mac offends me too!

Sounds to me as if they are trying to alienate a good portion of their market, and that they are succeeding.

Certainly doesn't sound like a software company that will give much of a damn about you once you've coughed up for their product - if what I have read on this page is anything to go by...

I think sometimes the thought is " Mac is only 6% of the market"
Well 5% of the people control 85% of the worlds economy. People running Word or Surfing AOL at home are not their market. It's everyone who has chimed in on this thread. Sorry to start the MAC'off - but it seems to not only be me who's a bit bummed out.

The Mac holds a very tiny market share overall (around 2%, not 6%). However, in video apps it holds a proportionally larger share. At one point Jarred said that 82% of DVXUsers were PC based, and 18% Mac-based. That would imply that a DVX User was 9 times as likely to be using a Mac as the public at large is. Still not a huge percentage, but definitely something more to be reckoned with.

I expect that the HVX will have even a larger percentage of Mac users; I know it's already converted Jarred and I'm only waiting for MWSF to see which way to jump.

And how many of those respondents are creative professionals (meaning make their living at it).

In the world of agencies, design ,and audio and video post Mac is pretty much the standard and has been for a while.

I'd say your hunch is right, if I'm an example. I'll be buying a mac almost solely because of the HVX.

I held off for years because my girlfriend bought one of the dud G3s back in 2000, and Apple never fixed it for her - gave her the run around for years: she limped along with a machine that crashed up to a dozen times a day.

There is another factor: Shake not being supported on windows anymore. I hate to cave into the tactics employed by Apple: buying Shake and discontinuing windows updates and support - I think its despicable... but I don't really have a choice.

Oh well.

well shake is getting pretty powerful in the mac world and alot of movies are now using macs to make fx (king kong i.e.)..

but yes.. i switched only because of the HVX. even worse.. i switched 2x. A few months back when i heard vegas wont support it i switched, but that switch failed cause it was such a shell shock and i think i got a lemon.. three weeks ago when i learned for sure vegas was bailing on the HVX.. i switched again, and its been alot easier.

It's still hard though.. i mean i have been on PC's since 1982.. i ran BBS's via dialup on 1400baud modems then.. ascii and all, way before this internet stuff. So for me to through out those 20 years kinda hurts.

Good thing a few years ago when dvxuser was running off a unix box in my closet I learned some unix stuff.. so the new Mac OS is a little better to me.

You're right, Macs are popping up here and there in the VFX world, but we used Linux stations to run Shake at Weta on King Kong.

:) Unix rocks: I'm sure you'll love Mac OS. That is one thing I'm looking forward to when I get my Mac...

Reality Check

Reality Check

I also talked to someone over at Serious Magic about an upgrade pack supporting DVCPRO-HD. They made it clear that it is not trivial but they are considering it. While they are chewing that decision over, I am likely to purchase a new Mac laptop (depending on announcements at MacWorld.) But I don't begrudge Serious Magic. They have to focus on their core competency and that doesn't extend to the Mac & Unix platforms. So not only is there a request to support DVCPRO-HD, but also port their products to Macs. I think we are overestimating the size of their company and the potential revenue streams.

As to my philosophy, I'm not for OS zealotry. I just want the best tool for the job irrespective of brand. Feed them and they will come. :cheesy:

Full disclosure: Mac dual G5, FCP/Shake; AMD dual core w/ WinXP Pro x64; Intel dual w/ Gentoo Linux.

I'd like to point out that i chose No, i wouldn't buy it because I'm on a mac and it wouldn't run, so what's the point of buying it?

Jarred,

What do you know about how HDVRack records the MPEG2 HDV to disk? Is the quality equivalent to what goes to tape? I use DVRack as a redundant system in studio conditions, but tape is still rolling at this point.

I'm curious about your thoughts on how the DVCProHD / 50 product would contribute to tapeless workflow in file formats friendly to PC users.
