FS7: PMW FS5 Announced.

You can attach a standard Arri rosette to the body of the FS5 and then either use the FS7 arm or add an extension arm to the FS5 grip.

There are some differences in the FS5 grip but both work under the same modified LANC protocol.

Just playing with the face tracking AF at Sony we seemed to get good AF with very minimal hunting, if any at all. However, we had the only 2 pre-production cameras in the US so no recording.

Also nobody has mentioned the direct menu. Many settings can be changed via the joystick and selecting the items on-screen.

Yet another feature not mentioned-- no rebooting when switching modes.

Is that rear EVF as bad as the one on the F3 and the EX-1? Those were terrible and meant you really needed to buy an expensive 3rd party EVF to operate outdoors.
Could you put a hoodman loupe on the EVF? I am quite happy with that on my EX-1 - in fact I like it more than the EX-3. That could be a simple solution.

To me, the EVF looks a lot like the the one on my little AX100. It's a tad small, but once you get it up to your eye, I think that the quality is quite fantastic (on the Ax100 at least). I would hope new "pro" cameras wouldn't take a step backwards...

I was thinking this could be a good camera to hand of to my director on our current project, but business wise (to me) it would make much more sense to get a second FS7 as they would rent easier I'm pretty sure and I already find that such a small and light camera.
Specially after a full day of handheld with a F55 and canon 17-120mm combo (even with an easyrigg)

I tend to agree with you. It's just too small and consumer looking. I would only use this in shots I need something like a DSLR. But not as a main camera. It depends what types of jobs you do. Some jobs it may not matter that you show up with what looks like an amateur or consumer camera. Other jobs this matters a lot and like you said, the FS7 is already very small. I have taken my FS7 to returning clients jobs where I used a F5 before and got some comments along the lines of you downgraded? Why are you using a small camera? Is this as good or professional? etc. On top of all that the feature crippling coupled with the price makes it more worth to go for a 2nd FS7.

So I've got a question that I have not seen anyone ask. If you take a Canon 24-105 and put it on
a metabones speedbooster, and use the 'clear image' zoom on the FS5, does that Canon lens kind of become
both wider (because of the speedbooster), faster (because of the speedbooster) and longer (because
of the 'clear image' zoom)? Kind of making it similar to a 17-112 F2.8? Does this make sense to
anyone else or am I just crazy???

It does not become wider than 24mm. But it no longer becomes 36mm on the S35 crop sensor.

It becomes faster, due to the concentrated light.

Not sure what the Clear Image zoom will do, but sounds great :-)

I am using the Sigma 24-105 f/4 OSS btw, as its a bit sharper and overall better IQ than the Canon, but most importantly, its lower T value and does not change T value when zooming towards the long end. My Canon 24-105 made filming for a real hell in post, as every new composition had different exposure. 24mm was over exposed and clipped areas, while 105mm was too dark and became noisy when lifted. No such issues with the Sigma!

I believe Martin is incorrect re whether it becomes wider. Ultimately these FOV questions have to do with what you are comparing to what and can get confusing . Martin is considering the FF sensor his reference. But if your using S35 sensor camera , make that your reference Thus:

Its confusing to say that a 24mm lens becomes a 36 on a S35/APS-C sensor.
It is simply a 24mm lens on a cropped sensor - same whether the lens is FF or APS-C lens
However a FF 24mm lens on speed booster is now functionally aprox an 17mm on the S35/APS-C sensor - same as a an APS-c 17mm lens would be. It does become wider.

Martin I rejected the Sigma despite its advantages because it went way out of focus as you zoomed as opposed to the Canon which held focus at least better. Never been sure that was the right decision, but the Sigma just unnerved me. Do you find that to be a problem? I'm not crazy about the Canon though.

Yeah, I KNOW it becomes wider because you can see it by putting
the lens on with a regular smart adapter, then a speedbooster. Compare
your field of view and yup, it's wider. And yeah that's why I said 'around'
a 17-112.....because I am using Super 35 FOV as I'm not a FF shooter.
So normally with just the speedbooster you are looking at a 17-75mm
(approximately in Super 35 FOV). And you get the extra stop from a F4 to F2.8.
But with the 'clear zoom' it also extends the range past 75mm.
I was just thinking with the speedbooster and the 'clear zoom'....it might
make this into something more able to use a lens like the 24-105 (Canon
or Sigma) as a 'poor man's Cabrio'.

Clear Image Zoom is a digital zoom. That is, it's essentially a magnification, but Juan Martinez claims that there is virtually no quality loss. It's 2x in HD and 1.5x in 4k. So in HD the 24-105 would be 210 at the long end. You can also use it on primes to convert them into zooms. I find it difficult to zoom the Canon 24-105 smoothly, and it's not parfocal, so if Clear Image Zoom works as advertised, it could be very handy.

Im guessing it will be part of the FS7 upgrade........

It might be part of FW3.0 if the FS5 is based on the same platform as the FS7, however, I would've thought Sony would've bullet pointed that ability in their IBC FW3.0 info.

It would be nice to use the zoom rocker for something...

FS5 positives for me: 240 FPS at full HD res and it does 960 fps at 720P... 960...wow! Pretty cool. The light weight of the camera is startling. The variable ND will be very nice. They upped the computer power so menus will not be sluggish. I like the rotatable handgrip; very EX1ish—pretty cool little camera.

Agreed.

A SpeedBooster is simply a focal reducer which effectively makes lenses wider (& faster).

It looks like an in-body upscale that ARRI uses inside Alexa and Amira for the "4K" image. ARRI has its 5.7 MPX open gate upscaled to 4K DCI and, just using basic math, a 1.5 zoom is basically the same thing (5.7 x 1.5 = 8.55). Now, one should be able to do the zooming in post unless the internal algorithms are somehow superior to the third party solutions.

"Upon initial release in November, the FS5 will output QFHD (UHD) 3840x2160 video in 4:2:2 10-bit up to 30p via HDMI. "

Mitch, is this correct? Everything I've read from Sony & journalists at IBC so far have said it only puts out 8-bit. Be great if your right. SDI too?..
I must apologize and give a correction. The UHD output over HDMI will actually be 4:2:2 8-bit. I looked back in my notes and had it wrong. I confirmed this directly with Sony today. My bad.
