FS7: PMW FS5 Announced.

I also read no Cine EI mode, No LUTS.
Hrmm.... Decisions Decisions!
I keep reminding myself how well things have gone with the C100 and how crap 24mbps AVCHD is, so the FS5 should really be awesome in comparison

Sony knows the fine line they walk, most of what people are ticking off as negatives here are the very things keeping the fs5 from undermining the fs7. The 1080 modes alone are extraordinary: 10bit 4:2:2 full raster 240fps? slow motion fanatics should be over the moon about that!

for 4k internal is limited, but that codec will still be 'good enough' for a lot of uses (GH4 users know full well), and even though it doesn't do 10bit out, the eventual raw output will give you the option, but of course at a cost.

Hard decisions on our part means sony is being properly clever.

The FS7 is distinctly sketchy above 60FPS, and that is at 100mbs or suchlike - this cam has a thinner coded 50mbs long gop.

Yep 240 will be cool, but might be a bit mush.

S
Concur... noise & artifacting would likely make it un-usable in most environments

I have to say that I'm impressed by the features of this camera. The electronic variable ND, if working as advertised, is a killer feature. I also hope that Clear Image Zoom is really something better than a typical digital zoom found in consumer cameras. Don't know what to make of the statement that the camera has the same sensor as FS7 (per statement made by Juan Martinez in the interview) but the native ISO is claimed to be 3200 ISO. Maybe better optimized handling of the signal at the hardware level?

That promo film didn't look that great. I don't know what it was - YouTube compression, grading, something?

I need to see more footage and if they look better, this is probably a camera for me. I don't need 4K and I love all the things that make FS5 easy to use (internal ND and so on), I just want that something that cameras like F65, Alexa, Blackmagic cameras, Digital Bolex and some others have. Remains to be seen if that's possible with FS5.

This body style is ergonomic if you use the flip-out screen. If instead you use the viewfinder for long periods of time, yes, I see why you don't like it.

When the VX1000 came out in the late 90s, I scoffed at it, saying that camcorders should rest on your shoulder. Later I worked with a guy who owned a TRV900 and I came to prefer its style. If you cradle it, even holding it against your chest sometimes, I think it works really well. I can manueuver the camera into various angles more easily, and I feel more engaged with my subjects.

It is surprisingly good in the A7S. Maybe not for the most quality critical shootings but sometimes reach is more important, then it's a great feature to have. I miss it on my FS700 when shooting events.

Colorado Springs, CO (September 11, 2015) - Convergent Design today announces full support of the new Sony PXW-FS5 camera. The two companies have worked to provide compatibility between the Odyssey7Q+ monitor/recorder and the new camera. No other monitor/recorder offers this level of integration.

fs5-email.jpg

Upon initial release in November, the FS5 will output QFHD (UHD) 3840x2160 video in 4:2:2 10-bit up to 30p via HDMI. The Odyssey7Q+ will record this in Apple ProRes in 422(HQ), 422 or 422(LT). The FS5 will also offer output of S-Log2 and S-Log3, which are fully supported in the Odyssey7Q+ LUT System.

In a future option, the FS5 will also offer RAW output. The Odyssey7Q+ will support all resolutions and frame rates output in FS RAW, as it currently does with the Sony FS7 and FS700 cameras. The Odyssey7Q+ will be able to record these RAW signals as both CinemaDNG files as well as Apple ProRes.

The FS5 S-Log2 and S-Log3 gamma curves allow the full dynamic range of the camera’s sensor to be captured. Using the Odyssey LUT System, six different presets provide a preview of a color corrected image for proper lighting and exposure on set. In addition to the provided presets, the Odyssey LUT System also accepts up to 140 custom 3D-LUTs. The Odyssey LUT System can display the corrected image on its OLED screen and distribute it over two SDI and one HDMI outputs. These outputs can be individually adjusted to show the LUT, the original signal, or the either along with the Odyssey Image Analysis Tools such as Waveform, Vectorscope and False Color. Other Odyssey7Q+ monitor functions such as Pixel Hyper Zoom and Anamorphic De-Squeeze are also fully compatible with the FS5.

One can also use various support rigs that spread the weight to the shoulder or hips. And, because FS5 is so light, the support rig can be very light as well.

PS. The 10-bit out makes a lot of difference. If there's no 10-bit out, the Raw out via SDI wouldn't make as much sense.

Mitch, is this correct? Everything I've read from Sony & journalists at IBC so far have said it only puts out 8-bit. Be great if your right. SDI too?..

So glad this is super 35 and not FF. there was lots of speculation this would be FF but I always knew that didn't make sense. A manly sensor for a mean man! Ain't no whelps here. Got go lads, no time to waste criticism color depth and nitrate--I'm off to finish the script for SW episode 8. A man's man!

I see Slog3 & sgamut3.cine but have heard nothing about LUTs . Can you record a LUT and white balance at the same time . That would be huge
anybody know if the improved grip will be available for the FS7?

I second this. Does anybody know if a grip like this would work on a fs7? Does the fs7 offer the right connections? A grip like this would add to the fs7 flexibility. Anyone have any info on this?

It would appear that both grips run on the modified LANC standard that has been in use since the FS100/FS700. Therefore, I would expect the FS7 grip to work with the FS5 camera, and vice versa - the FS5 grip to work with the FS7 camera. Either grip uses the same 2.5mm remote port, and presumably the same protocols. For what it's worth, the FS7 grip works on the FS700. Sony has every reason to reuse the same architecture.

except that the FS7 grip is permanently attached to the extension arm.....i am pretty sure that the FS7 arm could be attached to the FS5 and the FS5 grip to the FS7....problem is that the attachment point on the FS7 is so low on the camera that just putting the FS5 grip on won't let you put it down anywhere...well at least not flat of course....i wish the FS7 grip wasn't permanently attached to the arm....there is a thread here somewhere in which somebody found a solution and came up with a custom solution.....
