Pmw F5 & F55

Mitch, I don't know if you can say, but do you know if the same glass was used in the new PL lenses?
I was extremely happy with the quality of the glass, obviously the housing needed a lot of improvement, which it looks like you were able to offer feedback on.

Why are they talking about a Fimware update for the F5 when it will not ship until Feb 2013. Could they not just update it before it ships since its not a hardware issue? Without the upgrade the F5 is just a 60P camera, right?

Getting high frame rates means getting the software running the camera working at very high efficiency. Takes time to work out the bugs that slow the camera down. I've seen a log file from my F3, there is a LOT going on in these cams.

Is this normal procedure for Sony? I am not sure that I would buy until I knew when the free upgrade was going to be out.

It's becoming normal procedure, it seems. Red started it, now Arri and Sony are following. I'm ok with it as long as they're free updates.

I can give you the timetable for the F3's updates, it's something to go on. For the most part, Sony makes good on their time estimates, they don't give times when they don't know.

Nov 2010, F3 announced

Feb 2011, F3 shipped

Jul 2011, S-Log firmware shipped

Aug 2011, 3D firmware shipped

It use to be that all features would be enabled at product release and firmware updates were only bug fixes, but the market has changed. Nowadays you have to release a product faster so some manufacturers have decided to release their products earlier and then enable some features later after more development and testing has been completed. Software development and verification can often take a very, very long time because of the interdependency of the code.

Mitch, is the 55's internal 4K 10bit 422 S-log as well? Can it be graded like current 10bit 422 HD? If so, I see little need for the raw recorder (for myself anyway).

I got my question answered in the FB chat: the side monitor cannot be used as a video monitor, strictly for control data.

First footage will be shown at the end of November at the LA launch and at the Cameraimage show in Europe.

The F5 will NOT replace the F3.

NO dedicated side hand grip with a zoom rocker for the cameras. So, how do you use the servo zoom lens?

Two SxS queries:
- Will all new SxS cards be backwards compatible with EX1/EX1r/EX3/F3/PMW-200 etc. ?
- Will the new cards read properly in laptop express34 slots and the old USB 2.0 reader, or is the new USB 3.0 reader required?

When can I pre-order one of these?

LOL!!!

Sweeney, at IBC Sony had a prototype zoom rocker control for tripod use. So, they have been working on external protocol use of the servo lens. Not sure exactly what product release we'll see, but I expect we will see something.

I would not be loughing...
Japanese speed of manufacturing is nothing like US. Expect Sony Marketing blitzkrieg well before this year is over.

Sebastian:
Hi fabio, 14 stops is our planned target. Slog 2 can support 1300% D-Range and also the 16 bit linear RAW
