Pmw F5 & F55

I'd choose the F55 over the RED EPIC, all other things being equal. Global shutter for one is huge. 4K compressed internal recording, as well as friendly 1080p recording. An external module to rent on an as needed basis for RAW. That just the call I'd make.

I wasn't even talking Epic, I meant RED scarlet but yes the features Mitch and you mention are hard to ignore.

Workflow may be the answer to your ?... if the F55 in HD is the same as the F3... and if the workflow in 4k is easier than others companies that might be your answer there as well...

lol Mitch beat me to it about the dual recording... my bad wrist makes me a slower typer than normal...

I sure as hell trust Sony more than RED when it comes to engineering, support, reasonably priced accessories, add-ons, etc.. etc... I'm just looking at it economically and practically. I already own the F3 and in process of receiving RED that was dirt cheap. I've got some stuff invested there but nothing which can't be sold.

Bottom line is I wonder if the F55 plus recorder can come in at $30k total.

Ned, just read this on your website re: the Euro launch-
"No prices have been announced yet but we were told today that we will know the prices "in about two weeks"."
Is that two weeks from today, Oct 30th?

One camera for 4K/2K/HD internal recording.

Maybe too much information over load... pulled the below from the Sony spec sheet at the beginning of this thread...

Consider the enormous flexibility of internal recording codecs and the choice of HD, 2K*, QFHD* and 4K resolutions.

It does say its coming later... on the 2K & QFHD... so does the camera shoot 4k to the cards and if you want 4k raw you have to use the recorder...

Spec sheets have a hard time conveying practicality and utility. It's beyond their ability as mere paper and ink (or #FFFFF background and #00000 font--wait do I have that turned around?)

Can it be FS700 owners that invest in the raw recorder gets 14 stops DR? If the F5 and FS700 shares the same sensor then they must share the same DR when capturing raw right? Not to mention the same IQ. Another thing could be S-log2 on the F5 but that would only apply to baked in recordings.

Estimated retail price of $2,000. That'll make a lot of people happy.

Keep in mind this is only for the adapter. The 4K module's price isn't included. Who knows how much that will be.

Imagine if:
F5: 4000$
F55: 6000$

:D

why not a iphone app with a free down load? Lets get real these cameras are not entry level so they will not be cheep but Sony seems to have created cameras that are not crippled as they often do.

Exactly. On the F55 all the video formats go to the cards, including the "Cinema 4K" (4096x2160) and the "Broadcast 4K" (3840x2160). If you want RAW you use the R5 recorder which clips on the back.

Why are they talking about a Fimware update for the F5 when it will not ship until Feb 2013. Could they not just update it before it ships since its not a hardware issue? Without the upgrade the F5 is just a 60P camera, right? Is this normal procedure for Sony? I am not sure that I would buy until I knew when the free upgrade was going to be out.

The following qoutes were taken from: http://www.redsharknews.com/product...l-you-need-to-know-about-sony-s-new-f-cameras

[h=3]The PMW-F5 is based around the same 4K 11.6 megapixel sensor as the FS-700. The F5 records internally MPEG-2 50Mbps 4:2:2, SR 220Mbps 4:2:2 (future free firmware upgrade records to SR 440 Mbps 4:2:2 or RGB 4:4:4) or XAVC 4:2:2 HD or 2K at frame rates up to 120 fps). With the newly introduced R5 4K recorder, the SDI output from camera will record 2K or 4K 16-bit linear raw to Sony’s new recording media AXSM.[/h]
Pricing for all products will be announced closer to the anticipated shipping dates of February, 2013.

It's to give you a roadmap of what is to come FOR FREE in the camera as planned right now. They have a calendar and programming and other work takes time. You can buy a camera when it is released knowing that the free firmware upgrade is coming soon or you can wait until the upgrade is released and buy the camera with that included. Your choice.
