Ok...I've got the camera..

But it scares me man! If I start pressing buttons will I mess anything up? This camera cost me two grand man. Thats bloody $4000 if we're talking Dollars! (I'm sure we're getting ripped off in the UK!)

Whats the best settings? Peoples favourites?

Is F5 the best to get the film look?

Anyone know of any good DV courses (part time) that don't cost silly money?

Or does anyone live in Buckinghamshire who is willing to teach me how to use my new DVX100b? I'm willing to pay a bit....just not HUNDREDS...

Best wishes,..

Robstene.

Hi Robstene,

If you have the manual, read it a few times with the camera in front of you. After learning the features it'll be a breeze. This website has tons of articles and posts that teach the basics. You shouldn't be able to break anything just by pressing buttons, so explore! lol

take care,

The best settings are the ones that look the prettiest :) Just play around with one at a time and see what they do. Oh and that read the manual thing too... And Barry's book. Read that twice.

Why not man? I did, figured it out, and take some fantastic shots now. And Robstene, if you play with the settings, but dont save them. It will go back to the factory settings.

Well, I mean it's cool if you want to do it I guess. I'm not saying he shouldn't have.. But if I'm spending $2,500 on something I usually do some research and learn how it works, first.

Oh well.. I suggest getting Barry's book and DVD. Surely they will tell you everything you need to know about using the DVX :)

A classic, I just bought this camera, how do I get the "film look" post. I just bought this hammer and screwdriver and one of those compass thingies (ouch I poked myself on it,) can someone show me how to build a rocket ship? RTFM, man.

I'm drinking my morning coffee- so I apologize in advance, but for now I have that excuse. Read read read. There's no magic film look button.

Robstene, definitely check out Andy Starbuck's thread. Click that link and go to page one. Read his primer. It is what I did when I first had the same questions as you and it got me off on the right step.

Next, start shooting and experimenting. And read Barry's book!!!

Best of luck. Have fun.

The film look button is to go buy or rent a light kit. 24p is scene file f5 24pA is scene file f6. Which to use when and how to capture each and what to do if you accidentally shot in the wrong mode or captured in the wrong mode, or don't know what mode you captured in, or are mixing footage shot in different modes and how DVD encoding works with those modes are some of the many questions you may be asking soon. It's all here and more if you search. And here's another good place to start.

Coffee on board. Woop. K sorry I was a d!ck.

Yeh..so I bought the Camera without knowing how to use it...big deal..everyone had to learn how to use it!

Just thought some people could help me out,...and most of you have...thankyou..

Its just a little daunting when you first start out,..but hopefully I'll be fine.

Thanks for the help...

...Now how do you turn the bastard on???

Actually, go to page 15 and scroll down. Andy fixed the problem with the quotes. It's much easier to read! (I keep a printed copy in my camera bag, just in case I have a total brain freeze on location)

Robstene, re-read this thread a year from now, you'll be amazed how much you have learned! (if you follow the advice given by these users)

Shame you can't get this in a library in UK..

Good point.

What's stopping Barry from having a PDF download of the book, and maybe a compressed online version of the DVD?

Seems simple enough... you paypal the cost and get a code that leads you to a page with the download info...

Maybe that just make's it much easier to spread illegally? too much work to make it a PDF with all his focus on the new HD stuff? (although I'm sure he's got it typed out on a computer already somewhere)

eh... just an idea... I'm sure he has his reasons (and might even chime in here)

Honestly, why do we encourage these posts?
I, like many others was definately overwhelmed but I just spent a few weeks reading through the technical forum and spent everyday reading the manual. It wasn't until i was already semi-fluent with the camera that i got barry's book (but man do i wish i had got it earlier). Everything you need is right here, just ignore the frustration you'll undoubtably feel and just browse the site. Sorry to be such a downer but your on the best resource you can find.

It's a society of instant gratification and with the invention of the internets, it's only getting worse! Why do the research when with one post someone will give you the answers?

I don't know if it's "encouraging", but I don't mind passing along a few simple pointers to a newcomer. You have to step back and realize that everyone hasn't been on dvxuser since December 2006, or February 2005 or whenever. They don't realize there is a search function. They don't know there are readily available answers to such crucial questions such as, "what's that clunk?", "what's that red X?" or "how much should I charge for a music video?" If they stick around long enough, they'll find the answers. (Maybe.)

Alright, back to editing crappy car commercials for me.

I must agree the DVX is a bit overwhelming when you unpack it but as everyone has said, with a little experimenting and alot of patience you can get some great footage out of this camera. admittedlly I'm still a noobie ( wife bought it for me this past Christmas ) but I feel a little more comfortable with it everyday. just READ READ READ!
