Please give us our forum back!

I am a 7D user. I visit this website everyday for information, and problem solving.
I do not want to share it with information about another camera.
So I am starting a vote to get our little space back.

DVX typically only gives out forums to Panasonic camcorders. Be happy that your cam is even mentioned in a forum title. Think of all the HF, HV, Red, etc users that come to these boards.

I think the reason the two cameras are grouped into one forum is because they're essentially the same camera. They use the same sensor, shoot the same frame rates and will probably suffer from the same moire and aliasing issues. The only major difference, as far as hardware is concerned, is the 7D's second digic 4 processor, and the 550D's smaller form factor.

I'm of mixed opinions, I feel that the 5D and 7D have separate forums, why can't the 550D have its own also, but I also see the similarities between the cameras.

I sympathize and am also a bit annoyed by all the mostly content-less T2i posts. However I think in a week or so the excitement will die down and people will get back to shooting.

we will have an onslaught of specifically T2i posts but eventually the subject with be applicable to both cameras..they are almost the same and therfore it would be silly to create another forum...I only wnat to look one place to find info.

I would point out that the HPX-170 and the HVX-200 have separate forums despite the fact that their similarities are comparable to the similarities between the T2i and the 7D.

Conversely, I would point out that for several months the GH1 had its SECTION separate from the rest of the DSLRs and we loved it and when they took it we were pissed....but it made sense. This too sort of makes sense.

I say if you don't like it wait till the firmware update mid march and buy a 5D...they have their own forum :D

Yet, I can promise you that when the GH2 comes out it will likely share a forum with the GH1...which is fine...but I wouldn't want the barely video shooting G2 or GF1 sharing it..however, we get posts from GF1 users from time to time, and we welcome them. The T2i just happens to shoot great video...so don't hate, be glad! Go buy one as your B-Cam! Life is good!

So, you "would" point that out, except for the fact that it's not true. :P

HPX170 and HVX200 have been in a combined forum since the 170 was first announced, because they are so similar and all the workflow issues are the same.

HMC150 is in a separate forum from the HPX170, because the workflow is simply nothing alike. Even though they're the same basic camera hardware, AVCCAM is not P2HD, so that warranted them being separated out.

Let's take a live sample!

Breakdown of current "Canon EOS - 7D/550D/T2i" threads:

  • A Mamiya Lens...
    Lens Discussion
  • Few T2i Questions
    Noob questions for T2i
  • spy photo of t2i replacement
    T2i & 7D joke
  • Please give us our forum back!
    Complaint about 7D/T2i forum combination
  • General Optical Low Pass Filter swap project (to reduce moire and aliasing)
    General DSLR
  • T2i in premiere pro CS4
    Noob question for T2i
  • Unclear on 7D/T2i
    Noob question about T2i(and 7D)
  • T2i It's begun
Rant about T2i test footage/"time of month" for OP
  • Variable ND filters?
Filter question, belongs in lens sub-forum?
  • Kessler Pocket Dolly
    General DSLR
  • Build a two shoulder PVC support rig for cheap!
    General DSLR
  • Hollywood Celebrity Canon DSLR Users
    General DSLR
  • Canon 2ti Body Only Where to Buy?
    T2i launch
  • FCP Timeline Help w/ 7d
    7D Workflow
  • Stolen Alert: 7d/18-135 in NYC
    7D Amber Alert
  • 7D Filming gunfire
    Technical Question
  • Edited it H.264 and now I'm in trouble
    7D/T2i Workflow
  • Just Picked Up My New Canon 7D!! Pics Inside..(first cam was broken)
    7D enthusiasm
  • Bitter Cold Trade Show and Comp
    7D footage/stills
So, as far as I can tell, it breaks down like so:

  1. 2 lens threads about lenses or filters could be on the dedicated sub-forum "Lens Discussion"
  2. 3 noobers are asking T2i questions without doing a basic search
  3. 1 is complaining about the 7D/T2i combination on this forum
  4. 1 more is complaining about T2i footage on Vimeo
  5. 4 are general DSLR issues that would fit on the general DSLR board
  6. 1 T2i and 3 7D threads address normal stuff with 2 others that belong
  7. 1 thread should be in the technical discussion sub-forum
  8. 1 is an out of place footage thread

So, as unscientific as that was, I guess I feel like yes, there are the newbies that have the silly questions that make you want to say, "is your computer plugged in?" But they are by no means overrunning the board.

My whole take on it though is that yes, the 7D group is a bit more established and I would prefer it so stay that way. The T2i is at such a low price point that I think even more new entrants to DSLR video are going to be showing up for several weeks to come, if not longer. It would be cool to keep them corralled in their own pen and the DSLR savvy folks that make the switch to the T2i can help their own kind out.

Once the 5D firmware is out, its basically going to be a 7D with full sensor. I don't want it to be included here, I'd prefer each to have their own board, but given the T2i's inclusion, the 5D has no logical barrier to its inclusion.

Here's what we can do that would cut down on some clutter. We could use a super faq of answers to all the questions that roll in. Something that old users can quickly link to when a slew of newbs comes in with the same tired questions. It will save time and cutdown on clutter. I am juggling some things at the moment so can't put my full attention to it but if everyone wants to start putting stuff together I'll collate it.

Hopefully ratings for threads and video posts would help to showcase the "Good stuff" and help week out "my kid doing twitter on my iPhone" :)

I knew I forgot to finish that sentence!

Yup...and the HMC-150 deserves its own cause it is different.

Again..I was sort of arguing both sides there so I sort of forgot to finish certain points lol.

forum structure is always liquid around here. not fixed...

It is not based on the brand of a particular camera. It IS based on user demand for this particular board. Beyond that, it is primarily based on trying to create a forum structure that is comprehensive but not overwhelmingly unnavigable.

So, things are fluid. particularly so right now, with the onslaught of inexpensive, very popular cameras.

Don't want too many new sections, but at the same time don't want to encourage the stepping on of toes by things being too compacted... which is why the whole dslr section got a nice expansion when it became apparent that the 7d was here to stay... at least for a while.

Just give it some time. offer up suggestions along the way, and eventually we'll get the forum structure worked out. It's pretty evident that dvxuser needs another pretty major overhaul in the realm of forum structure. It's coming. but, hopefully in proper doses. Plus we'll be moving to new software here hopefully in the next month or so that'll change things up a good bit as well.

One thing is for sure though. It doesn't matter how well structured a forum is, if the membership isn't committed to helping keep the house nice and tidy, it will become cluttered and highly inefficient.

Jason

its because once you dip down into high school budgets, the posts get dumber

I don't understand where this apparent elitism is coming from with some of the 7D owners....

It's kind of funny to hear some 7D owners speak of these two camera's as though they have vastly different budget requirements, and somehow have exclusive markets. Again, somehow indicating by default that the owner of a 1600 dollar camera is going to be far more experienced than the owner of an 800 dollar one....

Let's keep things in perspective here guys :)

Just delete the threads and ban the idiots. Lock the place down and order will come.

nope. but the 1600 and 2400 camera owners, are normally older. thus know how to read, and search, and try and find what they are looking for. rather than new kids that are used to not looking, and having everything spoon fed. Two distinct demographics. Not saying all the rebel cats are like that. but posts show they are mostly.
