Hey guys, just wondering what you've had the best success with. Am about to consider the hmc150 or hpx170. But since the sweetspot is 720p and the dslr sweetspots are 1080 i'm thinking i might be better off with something like the xf100 or even xa10.

I can't really afford to go up to ex1 or xf300......thoughts, suggestions?

The uses would be as a second camera (weddings) to the t2i or maybe if i upgrade to 7d.

For most shoots my main choice would be the dslr and using the camcorder as a fill in for moments where the dslr falls short (aliasing on wide shots, rolling shutter, etc) But would mostly be the "b" cam.

I can match up footage fairly well between the T2i, 5D, and my HMC150. Color wise I just have to turn down saturation a tad with the HMC and the colors all look uniform.

I mix footage between my 7D and my Sony FX1000 alot of the time. Most times you cant def tell the difference between the two. If I play with the settings on the FX and its a daylight shoot, it sometimes come out allright.

lol yeah the fx1000 is a great cam, but for mixing hdv against full 1920 x 1080 it can be tricky i imagine. Honestly if this weren't for avchd/p2 technology, i'd be looking at how i could match an a1s or fx1000 with an hv40.......still wonderful camera's and the price is finally reachable...lol.....actually if it weren't for me decing on a dslr for dof and camcorder for that 2nd camera, i'd still be looking at that combo. Loved my hv40, but alas it seems so out of date next to my t2i footage now.

Except the low light situations, I dont find the CANON DSLR footage to be any better than CANON HVseries footage...

really?..........i'd have to reeeeeeally disagree, find the hv really overrated in low light even with the whole photo button trick and this is coming fom an hv fanatic...lol...the t2i is great in low light in my humble opinion......the advantage is being able to use a fast lens in those environments.

The DSLR's, like the HMC150/HPX170, are quite soft in video mode. They don't resolve anywhere near the full 1080p. The aliasing makes it appear sharper because it can introduce a lot of false detail. Most HDV cams will outresolve them (my FX7 easily outresolves my T2i), so don't discount any of them, espescially if you want to buy 2nd hand to save a few dollars.

What will be more important than sharpness when matching footage is the colours and contrast levels. This is where I think the Panasonic's are closer to the DSLR's than the other competition in that price range.

hmmmm, interesting point.......just don't know if i could move back to hdv, my reasons are the compression but also just the tapes and slower uploading. The one thing i still love about hdv tho is the computer resource friendliness in the edits.

anyways, a lot of it is apples and oranges isn't it?...obviously the hmc/hpx will not quite match a dslr's sharpness (false detail or not) so my real aim would be to figure out the dummy friendly way of matching colors and brightness/contrast.

Thanks for all the input tho......i am extremely happy with my decision to go dslr. I have many reasons, but if for nothing else having real dof, not the foggy dof adapter look. The only question is what camcorder is best suited as a b cam. I know it sounds weird saying the hmc/hpx or equivalent would be a b cam to a t2i/7d....lol.....i guess really they would be b cams to each other depending on the situation.
