Playing with the Canon XC10

Like the Sony x70 I heard there were issues with certain codecs that did not import into FCX and other NLE's

Thought I update on this.
According to a fellow on another forum, today's update of FCX solved the import issue. So now it seems all Software including apples can import it natively.

Ive been asked quite a bit about what the 4K 305Mbps 4:2:2 C-Log looks like ungraded.
Here are a few "Before and After Shots". I've spent maybe 10 seconds per clip on grading so its more to show the ungraded.
But most of all its to also give a link to two random 4K and one HD Slowmo clips that you can download.

Can report that the fellow on eBay selling the 64gb Lexar Cfast 2.0 for less than a 32gb costs in Sweden is legit.

It's obviously some sort of Grey import since it shows up with a sticker in moon language and no warranty.
It was professionally packaged in anti static bags but not in an official Lexar box.

No customs or import tax within the EU.
Tried it at 305mbps for a couple of minutes without hiccups.

Thanks for the info here mate, I picked up an XC10 today and looking for compatible Cfast 2.0 cards - looks like the Sandisk 64 and 128 ending in B work, but which cards exactly appart from the Lexar 64gb above are you using for 4K on the XC10? Which have you tested? I'd be great if you can share, as it seems none of the reviews I've seen talk about which cards they use as I know some people with the XC10 have problems with the older 60GB ARRI Sandisk branded Cfast 2.0 cards.

Thanks

Ive only used the Lexar 32 and 64GB. Works great.

I got my XC10 yesterday. I had read in a few places that the more affordable Atomos CFast (not 2.0) cards worked with the XC10. From the write speed it seemed possible, so I ordered a 128Gb Atomos CFast card. It doesn't work... It will record for a few seconds then stop with an "insufficient write speed" error. This happens on both 205 Mbps and 305 Mbps 4K record modes.

Just an FYI.

Well that's because they are 1.0 CFast cards, and the XC10 specifically requires 2.0 cards due to the 305Mb/s bit rate. But thanks for testing nonetheless.

i tried 2 older Sandisk 60GB and 120GB 450MB/s cards and both work fine in both 205 and 305 Mb/s 4K modes on my new XC10, so I guess I just joined the club too :)

Well that's because they are 1.0 CFast cards, and the XC10 specifically requires 2.0 cards due to the high bit rates required for 4K video. It is possible that also the bus on the 1.0 cards is the bottleneck, but I don;'t know for sure. What I do know is that the XC10 only accepts Cfast 2.0 cards, and not all - I believe I read the Wise Cfast 2.0 cards are no good on the XC10, but the Lexar (as tested by the OP) and the Sandisk ones work. But thanks for testing nonetheless.

I have the XC10 and got my Atomos 1.0 CFast working at 305Mbit by formatting it a couple times on my mac as HSF journaled.

Interesting thread.
So what's the general opinion on the XC10 from those who own or have used one?
What's it like in the real world?
What kind of shooting will it be good for?

For me its run n gun, point and shoot, grab all, bring along etc.
It really is the complete package in a small form factor.

I just did a low level format of the Atomos CFast 1.0 card and now it works! It's a 128 Gb card with a write speed of 80 MB/s (640 Mbps) and cost $240 from B&H.

Lobbamobba,
thanks for your reply. I have been following all your comments on the camera in this and other forums.
Can you access and change ISO etc with the little joystick next to the menu button like the C100 or do you have to use the wheel or touchscreen?
Any chance of seeing any indoor low light to see how the camera handles it?
Thanks again!

in 4K? How long did you record for? Any skipped frames? I am surprised a 1.0 card works, as the Xc10 requires 2.0 at least on paper and some people see MEDIA NOT RECOGNIZED screen for the 1.0 cards. Can you provide more information thanks

Yes, in 4K. Have shot long takes up to 10 minutes with no issues.

Thanks Dusty, that's great news as the 1.0 cards are much cheaper, at least the ATomos ones. Cheers

Any more voices on this? How safe is it now to buy one for this purpose? Have there been people NOT able to do this with this formatting method?

I just got a XC10, its really interesting and surely a "C" image in daylight. It struggled in very low light in HD, 4K was much better. I'd say till 6400ISO is fine on 4K if you output on HD for the kind of projects this camera would be used for. HD not sure yet.

Time lapses with this thing couldn't be easier. And it's great how fast you can switch from HD to 4K.
The file format sucks, it's not easy to quickly check clips on the computer. Using VLC now. Anyone knows a better app for this?

AF is slooowww, but at least it's smooth, it's never really shocky.
Manual focus throw is ridiculously slow even on the fastest setting. Not sure who would ever use the slowest setting, but I'm guessing the battery would run out before you can do a pull.

Even the on camera mic sound is pretty alright for what it is, at least it's audible and there is little handling noise (watch out for the strap though).

The loupe is for specific purposes only I think, you either have it on or off. Once you start switching you're gonna hate it.

Not sure why this is callled a "hybrid camera", as the "photo mode" is pretty much the same as the C100. AF is quicker then I though though, wish it could focus that fast in video mode...
This files are less then 1 MB, quick web delivery only. I guess the 4K is the REAL photo mode of this camera. In that sense it's pretty interesting, it's easy to export frames in camera and transfer over WIFI. Great for all those camera men who don't own laptops :undecided

Does anyone know good options for a wide angle convertor? Would make the camera even better!
