playback

Is it possible to play back footage directly from the HPX300 to an old fasion CRT Tv using a cable? What kind of cable with what connectors on both side of the cable do I need?

Yes you can do this by taking a composite or component BNC output from the 301 to the TV via scart/video in or RGB inputs.

Hi Gary,

I have a very old tv with only a scart input, but I am glad this is fine as well. What do you prefere at the camera site the composite or component BNC output?

Probably I have to redirect the camera signal to those outputs right? Can you give me the path in the menu to do this?

tanks in advance

I just use the composite output and it should work straight away with no settings needed in the menu. I have been using it today with a bnc at the camera end into a phone which is them plugged into scart plug with video and audio phonos. I was just using the video feed so only one lead was needed. The compostie isnt full HD but it is good enough from framing and colour checks.

You can also select in the output menu if the on screen displays are fed to the ext composite monitor output, this can also be cut down to just timecode and record with the display button on the side of the camera. You can also choose to send the zebras to the ext composite output.

I just noticed that when playing back on the CRT using the composite out I do not get 16:9 images (recording was done in avc-I-100 720/50p). I thought all HD codecs are in 16:9 or is it somehow changed when you take it of the video output and is it just 16:9 if you would transfer the footage of the P2 card in FCP ? Does the composite video output also give not the best quality images?

edit : forgot to mention that I use a CRT 4:3

You sort of answered your own question there, the 301 is ouputing 16x9 but your monitor is 4x3 so that is what it will display.

I use a cheap 14" 4x3 LCD monitor as my location guide but I have to switch it to 16x9 on its menu to display the full 301 output. It is actually good to display 16x9 on a 4x3 monitor as it shows the black bars to and bottom and allows you to see the top of frame accurately, sot of like an underscan.

The composite output is not the best quality as it is converted from HD to SD if you want the best quality you need an HD/SDI monitor.

That is what I don't uderstand I do not getthe the black bars top and bottom when displaying 16:9 on a 4:3 display.

You need to switch it to 16x9 but if its a CRT it will probably be 4x3 only so you will not get the black bars only a 4x3 picture.

Small 4x3 LCD TV's are very cheap or you could even get a 16x9 15" TV for around £100.

Ok I see. By the way are you family of the famous Graeme Nattrass?

A distant relation as we are both from the same area in the UK, we also look similar and the name spelling difference is down to the family being split in two when an ancestors name was spelt slightly different.

There is also a long hsitory of John and names begining with G in the family so Gary, Greame, George, Gavin etc is very prevalent.

The 300 does not have a component output - just composite and SDI, which is the video and the audio in one BNC style connector.
