PL-mount for 7D with support for all lenses

Then Perry, why not make one for $1,000 and sell it here? I'm sure you'll find many buyers. And you'd totally clean up, because making a product for $40 and selling for $1,000 is going to be an awesome profit margin.

Until then, why rag on someone who's actually gone and done it? At least now there's an option in the market.

As they say, a bird in the hand is worth a million in the bush. Although pricing is relative. The cost of this currently available PL mount is likely peanuts to their target audience. When you're dropping $60k per zoom, a couple grand for mount is going to be pretty trivial.

Actually You can't do a pl mount for 7d without modifying the camera it is physically impossible unless you put in some optics and other junk and that will inevitably introduce artifacts and/or make it less light sensitive which defeats the entire point of using a pl lens. And it is hard to use the camera as a director's viewfinder if the exposure isn't the same. And those $1200 for the gh1 mount doesn't include the camera (nice mount though). And the gh1 has crappy compression and (not sure) I think not a full size sensor, which will mean you don't get the full frame given by the pl lens.

As for this one, it has IMHO a very nice build quality. Just lacks the black colorization, which was skipped due to the demand to get it out there.

Can't ? This from Hot Rod Cameras over at Cinema5D:

I've had a PL mount to EOS for almost 2-months now. Yes, I've mounted Ultra Primes and other lenses with deep rear elements without modifying the body.

Sorry, it's not commercially ready- yet. To do this without sacrificing lens performance there's still more work to do.

If you don't mind hacking up your camera (and some people don't) you can put a PL adapter on EOS. That's not the business I'm looking to be in. I don't want to say any more about my PL/EOS mount progress for the moment, but I should have an update in early December.

Well he does say "To do this without sacrificing lens performance there's still more work to do". That is because it is physically impossible to make it without any performance loss. If you are really good you can make it with little performance loss, but it is impossible to do it without any loss of performance. Most likely you will loose on exposure step. You'll need to project it on a matte plate, and then make the camera film that. But in order to not see the projection plane it needs to be moving so it produces noise instead. In any case it will loose performance.

And I don't understand why anyone whould be hesitant to have the camera hacked up if they want a PL mount. The camera costs next to nothing for any non-private person in the business of making or editing film and in six months to a year it will be worth even less, since there will be newer models that are better.

Lenses are what matters, always. The house is expendable. Which is why a PL-mount is very useful.

Malmer, dead on about the camera cost. The body is a fraction of the cost of a set of Cookes, or Master Primes.

I'd be surprised if Mr. Friedman was actually attempting to build the equivalent of a Letus/Redrock/Cinevate ground glass adapter for PL lenses. The quality and light loss would be unacceptable to the kind of people looking to use PL lenses.

My guess is that it involves mirrors or a prism to mount the lens away from the sensor, leaving enough room for the protruding back elements of wider lenses. This would lead to a small loss of quality, but nothing near the degradation of typical so-called DOF adapters.

I understand that there was a lot of work put into this... but as a person who has been machining and fabricating everything from camera mounts to $200,000 motorcycles it bothers me to see people charging crazy money for something that cost $50 material cost and 2 CNC hours to make... yeah countless hours to find the right infinite focal point blah blah blah... all PL mount lenses abide by a single point formula. I could call Zeiss and find out exactly how far away the ass to their digiprimes needs to be away from the sensor for the focus points to be correct. If I had the start up money I would be making these items from everything from rails to mounts, handles and PL mounts... and would price them for the masses. For me it isn't about the money, it is the passion for the craft and pricing things right so other less fortunate people can share that passion and love doing the thing many of us on this forum wake up for.

I always say, there's no room for cheap people at the professional level of this business. If you can't understand why that PL mounted camera cost as much then you clearly do not have the need for PL lenses or can even afford them. Besides you keep saying it's $4000 for only a mount and ignoring the fact that it's $4000 for a mount + a camera body even after several people told you so.
You also forget that the price has to not only reflect the materials and labor but also R&D time and other manufacturing prices which surely are not only limited to materials and labor time. Yes, 2 hours of CNC but have you priced CNC machines lately? Just like we have to pay for our cameras and reflect that in our prices that CNC machine has to also pay for itself. Also need to pay who ever is operating the machines etc.
I think you should just stick with shooting video with still lenses. Old and lower quality still lenses that is because as already pointed out a set of new Zeiss ZFs costs more than this PL mounted camera. Stick with the prosumer stuff and stop complaining how much pro stuff costs!

I'm sorry but I find this response really insulting.

If this other person happens to think it's too expensive for what it is he may have a valid viewpoint. Telling him there is no room for cheap people at the professional level of business or just stick with prosumer stuff and stop complaining is frankly patronizing.

I mean honestly, why put a Pl mount on a 7D to begin with? Because it's cheaper than buying a RED or a Genesis or any other digital camera with an actual PL mount. So who is being cheap here, the one who criticizes it, or the one who is sold on it? The fact that anyone would say to another to basically "shut up you are obviously not pro" around this whole subject makes me laugh. The 7D has a huge host of compromises for anyone at "the professional level of business". The whole thing is a compromise for cheap people by definition. That's the point.

Oh, and this response is not insulting?

$4000 starting bid are they f-ing crazzzzzyyyy?!?!?!??!?!?!?!?!?!

I could quote some more among his very arrogant and one sided posts but I will digress.

Can't be patronizing since I don't know the company, have no relations to them or own anything they have ever made or sold.

Wrong!

I mean honestly, why put a Pl mount on a 7D to begin with?

1. Because you are shooting a RED/F35/ARRI/other PL mount camera show and need to get a shot where none of the cameras above would fit and you don't want a deep focus look of normal HD or need shallow DOF.

2. Because you have a production house with a RED/F35/ARRI and PL lenses and but also has clients or potential clients who can't afford the costs of the bigger more expensive cameras but would be happy with the 7D and you would like to expand your clientele, so you shoot 7D+PL adapter so you can use your lenses, follow focus, mattebox etc, get better quality than still lenses and not piss off your 1AC who is used to the PL lenses.

3. Because you are shooting a RED/F35/ARRI/other PL mount camera show and need a stunt camera. Risking a $1,700 camera + a PL lens beats risking a 200k-300k camera + a PL lens.

4. Because you have a rental business that rents PL lenses, not only Master and Ultra primes but also older Standard Speeds and Super Speeds and offering a cheaper camera body could mean getting more of your lenses out on rental with that body and more often.

5. I think you get the point...

So who is being cheap here, the one who criticizes it, or the one who is sold on it?

Read the above.
Besides, isn't it ironic that somebody is complaining of the price of a lens mount made for very expensive lenses which can have a weekly rate higher than the very price he is finding too expensive?

The fact that anyone would say to another to basically "shut up you are obviously not pro" around this whole subject makes me laugh.

First, I never said "shut up you are obviously not pro" . More along the lines of “If you can’t afford the pro stuff stick with the prosumer stuff and stop complaining how much pro stuff costs!” Hold on, actually this is exactly what I wrote. :2vrolijk_08:
Besides I was just using the same tone and arrogance he had been using. Many tried to reason with him but he's clearly out of touch with the realities of the market which a PL mount is geared towards and chose to keep his arrogant tone. So why would I waste time and reason with him?
PL lenses are not for hobbyists, amateurs or lower end professionals who can’t afford them, so why would a company worry about making PL mounts that hobbyists, amateurs and lower end professionals could afford? It’s a bit like Rolls Royce worrying about making a car for Saturn clients. Professionals pay for their gear with their gear. A PL mount like that could pay for itself with one spot. Unless what you shoot are weddings, corporate and low end type of stuff. But in that case why are you looking at PL lenses to begin with? This is not what they are made for.

The 7D has a huge host of compromises for anyone at "the professional level of business". The whole thing is a compromise for cheap people by definition. That's the point.

Professional only means people who get paid for their services. But there are different levels of professional and a PL lens is obviously at a higher end level of professional. Hence why I said "If you can't understand why that PL mounted camera cost as much then you clearly do not have the need for PL lenses or can even afford them. "

My post aren't arrogant they were nothing more than an opinion based on what info I was given... I still believe that a 4000 dollar PL mount on a 7D is pointless... and their is no arrogance in my statement about having the ability to make it for less... and also being mad at companies that screw the little guy into not being able to pursue their dreams because of money especially since the economy sucks... Your comment is in fact rude and insulting. Just because I am not able, as a student, to afford professional equipment should not exclude me from being in this field. It is obvious you passion is not in this field as much as mine.

I will take creativity over money any day... just because you may be rich and have an infinite amount of PL lenses doesn't mean ur the ****... real skill is being able to do amazing with what you have got... be it a handy cam, 7D, or whatever...

Okay, then this thread, which has devolved into what we don't like to see here, is now closed. I recommend to all of the participants that they, instead of arguing this point, now go out and "do amazing with what you have got... "
