Pitch Black (Teaser Trailer)

Don't get me wrong, I'm composing too and I think any composer gets inspiration from other pieces, but you have to admit it's pretty much the same. Just imagine it that way, you create a original piece, and someone else rips it off and does the same thing, only a little bit different. Wouldn't you be mad? I know I would but that's only me ;)

It's the same effect different notes- sorry but you're just taking an overly naive view of it. You don't think Hans Zimmer steals?

Let me run through your hypothesis - if I created something original and someone styled a sound a like... why would I feel upset? Unless I'm loosing money on it, I'd get a little POed on that front. But if it sounded like mine and didn't use my work... I don't know if I would be flattered, but certainly not upset.

The reason I think is that work is mine. Some one can make something similar but their work is theirs and it will never be the same as mine.

I know Trey & Matt do that on South Park a lot, taking "Take on Me" for example from A-Ha and just changing some notes. I just think it's wrong, if you like and want that song, pay for it, don't rip it.

Just to add one quick note since it sounds like your a South Park fan.

"Simpsons did it"

just an fyi - as long as your piece of similar sounding music is in a different key, you are usually in the clear. if it sounds the same and is in the same key then you can get sued. i don't think that would happen to you, but those are the legal quidelines.

simpsons and southpark get away with this because they are "parodies".

You miss the point of the South Park Quote -

Butters tries to come up with original ideas on how to destroy South Park - every plot he comes up with - his henchmen replies, "the Simpsons did it" Butters drives himself nuts because every original idea he has has been done by the Simpons... later to learn that the Simpsons stole from everybody else.

John,

I don't understand why you're even on this forum. Apparently you just want to show off your trailer and have us oooh and ahhh. People are telling you that you are blatantly taking another film's name, a recent film that is more well known that you think--especially within the industry--a fact that could even HURT your film as people searching for your film will come up with his not yours.

People are also saying you shouldn't be ripping off Inceptions theme music, which honestly makes your film look amateur. The "last time I checked" argument regarding copyright and what not is very amateur as well, and you're coming off as a bit of a jip artist and detracting from the originality of your film.

Your song is not 'inspired' by Inception, it's a total direct ripoff without being something you could be easily sued for, although you probably could make a case against you.

Change the name and the music and make the film your own, as everyone else has been saying.

Okay, John's trailer music is the karaoke version of the Inception music. So what??? Who cares??? Do you really think anyone will come after him? What will the argument be? That he's somehow siphoned off an income stream from Inception? Get real people. At least he didn't use "Stuck in the Middle With You" for the garage bondage scene, that would be blatant. Anyhow, looking beyond all the nonsense, John has put together a stylized looking thriller that looks like it will be a pretty intense short. Well done!

I agree. What are you doing in a filmmaker forum showing your film? Forums are for talking endlessly about the films you are going to make someday when you are finished building that DIY rig and posting the test footage on YouTube. After-all who needs real films when you have IndyMogul?

As far as being original, I think you should listen to the guy (Revsta) asking how to do Million Dollar Baby style lighting and Chungking Express effects.
