After a lot of thinking and shooting, I have decided to sell my 17-40 F4L and get a used 17-55 2.8 IS. I figure the 5Diii is still a long way off. I am meeting up tomorrow to look it over and check the AF etc. Is this a good deal or should I just buy new for $1060 from newegg and not risk it (price difference is not the hugest issue).

I found this lens for $850 with hood (private seller)

From seller:

the lens is in excellent condition - I have been very careful with it. I am selling because I switched to Nikon.

The front element is clean and there are no scratches or anything like that. But since this lense extends when you zoom it, there is some dust inside the lens, which is what you are seeing in some of the shots.

I have Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 for Canon EF

Best glass I've ever used...

Way cheaper than Canon and as well built and quality.

Hope it helps...

I was looking at that Tamron lens today (for sale on Craigslist in my area) and i was hesitant to buy it after seeing this

Are my hesitations wrong? is it a great lens?
I found it for sale used for $300.

I've used Canon 24-70mm 2.8 L, 16-35mm 2.8L, Canon 50mm 1.4L and based on extensive experience with using multiple different glass TAMRON stands out for the money and the esthetic.

I give it two thumbs way up...

Might help...

I bought mine for 350. Best investment on glass EVER. Do it! Or send me the link so I can (again). :)

I tried another canon 17-55 2.8 IS hands on and it is really nice. I missed meeting the seller today because something came up at work, but I still think I am going to go for it. The Tamron with VC is more like $650 new, so I can get the canon for $200 more.

I'm getting one of these lens Oct 1st. (or whenever the budget is released) I guess thats a very good reason for useing a UV filter.

Found another one with no dust issues. Trading my 17-40 $250 for the lens with hood. Seems fair.

The 550D, 7D and 60D are all good, but I would rather have the 17-40 and a 5D. It should pick up the extra stop on the FF sensor. I love my 550D and it's paid for itself now 4 times over, but the one job I borrowed a 5D for on request of my client I think has the edge over the crop sensor. The new 5D is right around the corner, so I will "suffer" with the crop format till then. Maybe it will make enough money to buy me one by then. The reality is you can't go wrong with any of these cameras or lenses. It just depends on what you want today and tomorrow.
The Canon 17-55 2.8 is half way to buying a current 5D to mount behind your 17-40. You also have a Tokina 11-16 2.8 you can use at 15-16mm f2.8. Then you will have 2 cameras and if you sell, the 550D is still bringing a good used return if you prefer the FF result. Then the $250 you plan to spend may be about the cost to upgrade to a FF body "today".

I am with you on going full frame, but who knows when they will release a 5Diii? It could be a year before one is available and if I were to move to full frame, the lenses I would need are big bucks. This is a $250 investment to make what I have work much better now. I took a shot with a friend's 17-55 2.8 IS in a dark room at 55mm at 1/6th and it was sharp.

I even considered selling and moving to the 5Dii, but that is just too much money when you can't write it off (and a new camera is on the horizon). I have access to 5Dii whenever I need it for a big job now.

I think if I were to get a 5Dii now, I would need the 24-105 F4L IS minimum. As you mentioned, the tokina covers me at 16mm, so I don't really need the 17-40 when I go full frame :)

A 5Dii body and two 16GB Sandisk extreme CF cards would run me $2760.

My T2i plus 17-40 plus three 8GB Sandisk SDHC cards are $1750 new. The most I could hope to get for that setup is $1550. If I go with the 5Dii body only and CF cards, that is $1200 out of pocket and I have no lens to cover the general range (except manual primes which would be better on FF, but not perfect for general photography). For that I need to get the 25-105 F4L IS kit for $800 more. So for $2000, I am at the same DOF (2.8 on APS-C is = to F4 on FF as far as DOF goes, range is 27-88 [17-55 x1.6] vs. 24-105) and my body will be obsolete very fast. I imagine I can get a much higher percentage of my money back by keeping the T2i. Since it is newer, I figure they will replace the 5D before a "T3i" comes out and the camera will remain hot. Also I will have a great lens to sell along with it (the 17-55 2.8 IS) that I didn't pay full retail for... Hard to argue with that logic, but I welcome you to critique my line of thinking. I have been struggling with this for months!
