Physical Backup Solutions for projects

This may be a very vague thread, but is something I have been struggling with.

What (in your opinion) is the best solution for archiving project data?

I have about 10 Hard Drives and several hundred tapes and DVDR's stored - only because I haven't had the time to back anything up and it's easier just to go out and buy a new hard drive whenever I run out of room.

Surely there is a recommended standard I can start using that will allow quick and efficient backup of Project files and data for later reference if needed? Maybe a nightly data tape system or?

I'm independent, so cost can also a concern.

Your thoughts and opinions are very much appreciated.

We have put our tape backup system into play. The office already had a DLT autoloader that is used for backing up the rest of the production office.

What we have done is simply set aside one of the backup volumes in the autoloader specifically for Video media, and told it to only archive instead of backup.

This means that it only does the backup when told, and either moves the data offline as part of the process or makes a backup archive of the original media for the project. This is opposed to it doing incremental backups, which would complicate the process some and blow out the amount of data we have to archive.

Our autoloader is pretty quick (2GB/minute) so it doesn't take long to archive large amounts of data. it also uses 400GB tapes, so it can store a lot of data.

In the long term, I would tend to trust DLT media for reliability over a HD mechanism.

Thanks Al, can you tell me the make/model you are using? or if you recommend an alternate at this point?

Just got a 70 gb rev drive and I am going to use that as archive for past project media.
I thought the size was convenient in that a full P2 store could fit on one disk. I ran some informal tests and discovered that I can move about 1 gb per minute over the USB connection to the rev drive. Not bad.
