Hey guys,
I am a graduate film student working on my Master's right now. I assume there are other film students who are interested in Phillip Bloom's new 7d DVD. If so please post or pm me. If there is enough interest I am going to email Bloom directly and see if he would be interested in an educational discount for film students. Or I suppose we could buy a copy and mail it around to each other, but that is not exactly supporting Mr. Bloom and all the work he did on the 7d...

Yea, that's also stealing and copyright infringement.

It is $135.00, AKA a good night at the bar. Just buy if you need it.

actually i did not realize that was copyright infringement unless we were copying the disc... sorry about that... to be honest... at this poor point in my game i will probably buy it, watch it religiously, take notes, and then ebay it to recover anything i can from it... who knows... $135 is not a night at a bar for me and if it is for you can we go out for drinks together sometime? $135 gets me the 701 head, half toward m h4n budget, or almost a glide cam... i am just trying to save in anyway possible

Then wait until someone releases a cheaper video. There are other people working on them as well.

I'm also a student (in th UK)... I'd be interested in a reduced price copy of the DVD (maybe an h.264 dl version would be cheaper?). Let me know what philip says...

It's not infringement if you are letting other people borrow it.

However, if you charge money, or copy it, it is illegal. You can let friends or strangers borrow your things anytime you want.

Yeah - even though I'm no longer a student and couldn't take advantage of a price discount anyway I'm still a poor just out of college student and think the price point is a little far north. I mean it is his right and prerogative to charge whatever he wants, and I'm sure the market will bear that - it's just a bit out of reach for me :(

Sure it isn't cheap nor free for that matter. But it's full of good info and if you can afford a $1,700+ camera (or a lot more if you go for good lenses and rigs like the Zacuto) is $130 really breaking the bank for training? That's barely even as much as the taxes or duties you may be paying on the camera. Seems like a fair price for first-hand expert training from someone Canon trusts enough to loan prototypes to before anyone else can even buy one. I don't get that kind of love myself from any camera makers...

There may well be other 5D and 7D discs that come along for cheaper and the market will adjust if any of those are equal to or better than Philip's. Haven't seen one yet but I'm on the lookout because I want to offer the best.

You can also find plenty of free training out there or just read the manual but getting the sort of experience someone like Philip brings is worth the extra dough IMHO. If you don't think so- you vote with your wallet. Just like anything else you are not obligated to buy anything. Value is in the eye of the beholder.

Students have been buying expensive textbooks for ages and selling them after they did what ever they needed to do with it.
So, watch it, take notes of the for you relevant parts and resell. Nothing elegal with that.

Or you can just read the manual, search dvxuser and other boards and actually learn how it works by actually using the camera...learning what not to do can be just as good as learning what you are supposed to do...imho

Unless you can back up lending a DVD is copyright infringement, I'm calling BS.

To the OP, start with the manual and go from there. I'm also getting my masters. But what do you really expect to learn from the DVD that you can't teach yourself?

Here is the chapter list:
Introduction
Sound Limitations of the 7D (dual system)
Setting up the Camera Menu (picture style)
Expanded ISO (Like gain, use multiples of 160)
Creating a more Filmic Picture Profile (shoot low contrast and low saturation to get more dynamic range for post)
How to Focus (does it look sharp?)
Using a Follow Focus (Left goes left, right goes right)
Using a Monitor (Wow bigger)
Using a Viewfinder (This works too)
Setting correct Shutter Speed for video (fps times two)
Re-mapping the Operational Controls (Why?)
Controlling Exposure (aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, ND filter)
Using a Matte Box (Heavy and expensive)
Selecting Lenses (There are lots)
Sensor Crop Factor (Not a big deal, learn about different sensor sizes by Wikipedia)
Tips for Shooting Handheld (Strap tension)
Using Video Support
Video Frame Rates (Easy)
Shooting in Slow Motion (Shoot 60fps)
Recording Sound (Press record)
Shooting a Sequence (Classical hollywood)
Rolling Shutter (Don't pan too quickly)
Avoiding Flicker from Artificial Lights (Change shutter speed, or don't use crappy lighting, or the D90)
Shooting at Night (Have fun, and don't drink and shoot)
Timelapse Techniques (Read a magazine if you get bored)
Summary (Read more DVXuser)

All of these topics have been well covered in these forms, and are free. I appreciate what Phillip Bloom is doing, and respect that he is trying to capitiplize on his blog, but seriously, everything you want to know is here.

Mr Bloom deserves to make a good living from the work he produces and he'd be rightly angry at people copying the DVD and distributing it on the internet, as so often happens to commercially produced work these days of course.

But I look at students in a different way.

They shouldn't have to pay for an education.

I am not advocating a mass copying spree by saying that, but what's the harm in one student buying it and passing it to his fellow students so they can learn? I don't get the capitalist copyright mania stuff some have posted. It shouldn't apply to educational stuff where the benefactor has no plans to make money from using it. It's just spreading the knowledge around the campus thats all.

I wish I had the kinda cameras that are available now when I was at uni, only 5 years ago. The DSLRs are game changers for students.

Save your money. You can learn more from watching free videos on vimeo. All you're going to learn from Philip's dvd is how to put the camera on a tripod, hit record, step back and watch the camera, then apply a magic bullet filter in post.

Everything you want to know about everything is on the web if you want to spend your time looking for it. But what is the quality and organization of what you're getting. You want to spend hours/days/weeks of your time sifting through the info that's out there to put together your own version of what Philip gives you in his class that's totally up to you.

I can tell you that if that's the practice that gets adopted no one will ever make training videos such as this one anymore because there will be no profit/motivation to do so. And then you as the customer will have three basic options:

1- Read the manual and teach yourself. Which is great if you have a lot of patience and can understand most manuals- which are written as dictionaries about a particular piece of gear with little or no practical instruction.

2- Sift through advice and free tutorials on the web on your own and devise your own composite training of what's out there. Great if you have the time and can distinguish the good advice from the bad.

3- Ask questions on forums such as this. Again this is a good way to go and what DVXuser was designed for but you'll be spending a lot more time asking questions and waiting for answers when you really want to just dive in and start getting more than adequate results with your gear.

It's the same with Apple's official training for Final Cut Studio. Is it for everyone? Nope. Is it cheap? Nope. But do you learn a lot of critical information in the most straightforward and efficient manner from true experts in the field- you better believe it!

(For the folks who are running pirated versions of FCS on an old Powerbook and frustrated as to why they can never get a project to turn out right... well there ya go with the students shouldn't have to pay for education theory. You get what you do or don't pay for...)

It's the same paradigm with any other form of something you might purchase: fast-cheap-good, pick two. You want fast and cheap training, this is not it, but I can tell you of all of the folks who have decided to take the plunge so far and purchase the 5D disc from my store, I've had no complaints. Quite the opposite in fact.

There's nothing wrong with eschewing a training course such as this by saying that it has no value or that you can learn all the stuff on your own for free. But then when you look at all of the thousands of training DVDs, books and websites around the world offering precisely this sort of information you'll realize that a market does exist and for good reason. For a lot of folks with brand new cameras like the 7D and other pieces of complicated equipment, fast and cheap training is not the preferred way to go.

Whoops, I read it as copy and mail around. Not, buy a copy and mail around which is how the OP had it written. My bad.

I do think $135 is cheap for a crash course quick education on a tool and skills that will make you money.

Totally agree Noah but on one issue I draw the line. I think that penniless students shouldn't have to pay for training material. The thing should be given to them for free by their mentors. Some students have it a lot easier purely to due being from a richer family and that isn't the way education should work.

The money should come from people who can afford it and people who will make money themselves from the knowledge it provides. I am sure there is a big enough market from that to support the student side of things should you guys so wish - but it's completely up to you. We all have to make a living, and you are right to be concerned about piracy. I hope the DVD is sustainable as a business, I hope the training DVD market continues to be a win-win (in awful business speak!!) for everyone who buys a copy and everyone who makes the guide in the first place. I did my own with the GH1 a few months ago and would have hated to see it pirated.

I hope i have not set up fire in the dvx camp... didn't mean to get anyone heated and to be honest i think we are all pretty much on the same page. As a student, I am certainly poor (married too by the way so that cuts into budget), but in no way am I looking for a handout. I am all for capitalism and people making money- it is what makes our country awesome (though Bloom is UK- oh well- excused).
The point about textbooks is spot on! That is exactly the analogy I was thinking when I posted it. Bloom is awesome and I value his advice and while I know sifting thru the forum and other sites I could learn it, I am under the impression that I should take in as much knowledge as possible to get the most out of this camera.
The entire reason i am getting a film degree is because it makes me work. I work hard for good grades and by going to grad school I have forced myself to learn to shoot, edit, produce, etc... I could've learned it outside the classroom for sure and might even be better at if I would have done that, but for me, school was the only thing that was going to MAKE me work for the knowledge! Same thing with this DVD

I will let you guys know if I hear from Den or Phil.
