Philip Bloom's mini shoot out with C300 and other cameras

I love philips reviews and I love this camera. Its a great sign of things to come from Canon.
Gary ... I'm looking forward to your findings on the 17-55

Thought his review was pretty funny begging for 1080-60p and 10bit HDMI :)

I have to agree though. How can they put out a $12k camera that doesn't have full resolution 60p? To my way of thinking 1080-60p is manditory these days. I'd rather see that than 4k any day. True 2k 60p so you could stabilize with the C300's image quality would put it over the top for any sort of action sports work.

Cheers,
Pete

I must say that Mr. Bloom sure knows how to showcase a camera, that was absolutely beautiful!

I really don't want to highjack this thread, but Scarlet has absolutely nothing on this camera, except numbers...
Loved it! Thanks Philip.

Merry Christmas everyone!

i'll take the bait ... A red Ford fiesta goes 60 mph, just like a red Ferrari...

Difference is, you'll never get 12 bit, 3-4K resolution or RAW out of a C300... ever.
Canon isn't ready yet to compete with the RAW output of Arri, Sony or Red,
perhaps someday they will be...

It's great to have choices, and I look forward to Nikon's next new low-light DSLR
to compare to the C300 and Canon's intentionally crippled 1Dx (in video mode, no clean HDMI out).

Some numbers do matter, but if you need a camera that performs
well in the dark with low data/power requirements,
the C300 is a good choice in a couple of month...

Im very curious to know if Sony is soon going to propose a replacement of the F3, with a more mobil modular design like the C300... If they do this, well it's going to be a big hit!

Are you planning to get the C300, J? Would love to see your work with it.

The C300 and F3 are plenty enough for all types of work out there. The only big question mark is for Big screen features. I was lucky enough to find the budget to get the camera i wanted, but if I couldn't, at the bellow 17K price range, I would seriously consider the F3, the C300 and the Scarlet. There is no clear winner between the 3.

From reading and from other posters comments, we can clearly see that all have their advantages and disadvantages and provide great pictures:

The C300 Pros:

Excellent form factor. Everything out of the box ready to shoot. CF cards. 8Bit 4:2:2 professional, BBC approved codec. Excellent low light up to usable 20 000 iso.

COns

Less dynamic range than the other 2 (seems like the consensus right now, needs confirmation), 8Bit only, no Auto focus of Eos lenses (not much of an issue for video but still not understandable with Scarlet being able to use it).

F3 pros

Excellent Dynamic range with SLOG, fantastic colors (with SLOG), very good low light performace, 10Bit SDI out, uncompressed 4:4:4, 1080 60P out HDSDI

Cons

SXS 4:2:0 8Bit internal recording, no good colors without SLOG (subjective personal opinion ), form factor not guerrila friendly and requires more expensive support gear.

Scarlet

Pros

4K, good dynamic range, RAW, 12bit color, Different recording modes and frame rates. 10Bit HD-SDI out (not 4:4:4), excellent form factor. Basically a Red One MX in a small package- the same performance of the camera responsible for Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and other Hollywood Blockbusters.

Cons

Requires more computing power for edit. Records to RED SSD's (EXPENSIVE), Worse Low Light of the 3, redvolts last 30 minutes.

very very possibly. one of my biggest clients is likely to be getting a few anyway so I'm sure I will be using them
the next wave of canon dslr's also hold my interests as do the upcoming canon cine zooms such as the EF mount 14.5-60mm T2.6 L
... so much to budget for !

Excellent summation of the 3 contenders.

Hi Philip your site is down (huge traffic apparently) so I'll just add to my comment about deinterlacing the Sony Nex5n material. Apparently you guys use FCP to edit. It has deinterlaced the 25p material of the Sony Nex5n thinking it's interlaced. You can check this out by looking at the materials in the project. They are probably set to upper field. Then the sequence has been set to none. This will cause FCP7 to deinterlace all the "upper" flagged materials resulting in a 50% drop in resolution and huge aliasing. The sony nex5n 25p material in your video has the telltale signs of deinterlacing so offcourse it will look bad. A lot of FCP editors fall for this trap as these settings are somewhat hidden.

Just look at the original files in quicktime and you will see that they are way better than that end result that came out of FCP.

Part 1 of my shootout is now up! philipbloom.net/?p=16350

Philip-

Thanks for the great work....But, your little film of St. Michel is outstanding....showing how good this camera does in low light is what's really getting everyone's attention here in Hollywood. Now, inside the chapel there it is really "medevil dark", so what was the ISO you used?....because it looked like you lit it.

Happy New Year!

The GH2 footage really impressed me. Everything seemed on par with what I'd expect EXCEPT the 720p C300 footage. What was all that colored moire in there? BIG disappointment to me. I hope that's just an issue with this preproduction model and hopefully something they fix in the final version. Looking forward to Part 2.

Also, did anyone else notice the purple fringing differences on the different cameras? Why would the AF100 fringing be so much more to me? All I could think is it was an issue with the tighter crop of the lens meaning the performance of the lens would be a bit different since we are using a smaller portion of it that we'd see blown up to 1080p as opposed to a larger sensor using a larger area of the lens at 1080p.

The XF100 & XF300 all have that same slight moireing when doing 720p and they use the same Digic DV processor so that will most likely be in the final production version too.
