Philip Bloom's initial GH2 review & video

Mr. Bloom's son [grin] has posted his initial impressions (and a video) of the GH2 he has on loan from Panasonic:

He says a full review will be forthcoming, but so far his impressions of the GH2 seem overwhelmingly positive.

Here's the video:

There are additional comments on the Vimeo page.

If just this one thing is true, his statement below is what's going to get many "hacked GH1" owners on the bandwagon for the GH2:

"Better than hacked GH1…yep for me it is, as the hacked GH1 no matter how high the bit rate goes it still SUCKS in low light with those damn vertical lines. None here and I shot at 2500 ISO today. Again, I need to do a full test soon before giving my definitive opinion"

Have a low light situation susceptible to banding then shoot with a GH2 otherwise use your hacked GH1. It will make a great combination on any shoot. Of course there are other reasons you might want to use the GH2 over the GH1 like if you need live monitoring on an HD monitor on set, especially when using a jib/crane.

I'll take the banding over a bright red spot.

Even if things like that do happen with your model, you can still easily remove it in post as philip said and nobody will ever know it was there. The banding on the GH1 however...

GH13 is not for the "common man" but for the ambitious folks that wants to go there. It's not the best, it's the potential +20k camera picture output that you can get if you know what you're doing. I would certianly not recommend a hacked GH1, hell even a GH1 to begin with, to anyone really.

This just in (tune in tomorrow for further updates) from Philip's blog:

"... Best of all…I have just checked this…the HDMI out is totally clean, no graphics (unless you want them) and the great thing is you can have as many graphics on the GH2 LCD without affecting the clean HDMI. Once caveat. If you use the EVF it for some reason disrupts the HDMI out if you move your eye away from it. To get round this make sure you disable auto EVF/ LCD switching in the menus and it won’t do this…My Marshall says it is outputting 1080i 60i once recording but it certainly looks progressive rather than interlaced. I will connect it up to my Nanoflash tomorrow …we shall see! Great news though as the pre-production version I had two months ago had a record bug and timecode on the HDMI out. I asked Panasonic to remove this as we needed clean HDMI out. I think they may listened to me. Hurrah! ..."

very easy to remove that dead pixel but that gh1 vertical banding always killed me. Uploading a fixed version now. My production unit doesn't have it, it's the one i bought in japan, did not use it due to me not being used to the Japanese menus yet.

This video kills me that we don't have a good US source for the Voightlander .95 lenses yet.

I should probably get a GH2, just for high iso, and leave 100-400iso high detail 24p and 720p for the gh13

Now if the nanoflash works better than I expect it to (low res - unless recording) the camera could be the best deal of 2011.

Is it possible to get 1080/60p through HDMI out?

Ever since HDMI 1.3 a standard single link cable can get 1920×1200p60 at the highest colour output of 48bits, and more resolution at lower colour bits. 1.4 spec, ups that again, though I don't know if the GH2 has a HDMI 1.4 port

Mark, have you checked out the V 50 f1.1? Not too bad, and its a considerable steal:

He probably means 50i - though at 17mbs, it would be better to speed up the 24 for PAL. (but it would have B frames, no?)
