Philip Bloom testing the new HPX370/371

Thanks Phillip! .. That was an excellent review of the
camera and for shooting in my home area ( San Francisco
born :) ).

If you would be so kind, could you detail your scene file settings?
It looks like the Cine gamma setting ... maybe a little down on the
detail? The chroma looks stock ..

thanks again for taking the time to share.

As a 300 owner, I know what you mean about the ease on
the battery .. it's pretty kind to 'em. Sounds like the 370 ups
that yet again.

You briefly mentioned the Fujinon .. care to expound on your
experience with it?

ps: if you dig shooting the seals, check out Point Reyes next time you're by in the Winter.

370 does not have ntsc/ pal switchable
Yes it does.

The 300 didn't have it, but the 370 does. At least, according to the brochure on Panasonic USA's website, and the one I tested had it. And the owner's manual/operating instructions PDF on the Panasonic site shows that it's for both the 370 and 371 models.

great review! I've been on highway 1, I just wished I would of had my hvx with me. It's so scenic around that area. Nice color, btw.

Phillip, I think you do a great job reviewing cameras. Once again, you've captured some beautiful images to showcase the camera's abilities. Bravo!

Nice job reviewing this great camera. You mention that the viewfinder is "pretty good" but compared to what? I compared my 150 viewfinder and LCD screen to my buddies' JVC GY-700U and would have to say that the JVC kicks the 150's viewfinder and LCD butt quite a bit. I would love to mount that JVC LCD on my 150! So what are you comparing the 370 viewfinder to? Also, you mention that it doesn't focus assit doesn't work while recording, is that accurate? My 150 does assist while recording. would be odd to think that the more expensive ENG camera doesn't do that.

Your depth of field looks much better than on the HMC 150, which is one reason I would consider stepping up to this. Any thoughts on DOF comparisons between it and other lens that you've used, both in the price range and a bit lower in price?

You can compare the 370's viewfinder to anything you want -- it's superb. 1.2 megapixels of Liquid Crystal on Silicon.

And yes, for no reason I can discern, the magnified focus assist doesn't work while recording, even though the 150's does. To be fair, the 370's LCD is 6x sharper than the 150's, so it's not nearly as necessary, but even so I don't understand why they would take a step backward from progress that's already been made.

The 370's DOF will be identical to the HMC150's, which will be identical to the HM700's, which will be identical to the DVX100's, which will be identical to *any* 1/3" camera, when those various cameras are set to the same focal length. The 370 can get shallower DOF effects when you use more telephoto on the lens, but when at equivalent focal length all 1/3" cameras will deliver equivalent DOF.

Thanks Barry. That's clear. Looking forward to the new Panny 4/3rds to gain that look of 35mm DOF for me when I need it.

BTW: I refer to your book often, it has been well worth the price many times over.
