C100: Philip Bloom reviews the Canon C100

It might be due to carrying the camera by the handle with that 70-200, and if it's still attached to a rig with rods, yeah that would definitely loosen some pieces up. I'd say a 3rd party handle would definitely be wise with that kind of use. Movcam and Genus make great ones that are much more robust than the stock handle, for sure.

Scary the broken wheel...
I just use the 24-105 with an HF on the handle, that's all. Plus I rarely hold the cam by the handle, most of the time the side grip.
And I always have to screw back on the wheel after few hours.

I'm fairly certain that the handle on the C300/100 is good for the camera +lens only. Maybe an attachment here and there. If you are adding rails, MB, recorder, evf, monitor... Buy a cage.

I'm gonna say that Cowpunk shoots lots of work with his C300 and I've never heard him say anything about handles and grips.

The C300 is a professional tool that many of us gladly ponied up $16k. "the handle is cheap..." Deal with it. Element Technica has a cheese plate/handle mount with 3 points of contact. Done. Peanuts compared to the $50-$60k ENG 2/3 setups that were the only way to go previously.

Yeah I know it's picky and the picture is awesome.
But how much more would it have cost to put in
two screws? People complained about the one in the
FS100 and they fixed it on the FS700. Camera
manufacturers DO listen to us and make improvements.

I like Phillip's reviews. They are always nice and long, well organized, and well shot. I thought this was a great review that IMO echoes what a lot of working DPs have already said about the C100... (paraphrasing) "Good camera, but I already own the c300, so I don't see much use for it aside from a B-cam".

I do find it interesting how he completely ignored the light meter on the LCD when discussing exposure. In fact, everyone seems to ignore this feature. It's a unique feature not found on the C300. Am I the only one who uses the light meter on the C100? I've found exposing two clicks over the middle usually yields excellent exposure and lines up nicely with the WFM. I would use the WFM all the time, but it hides the audio meters! In my experience, exposing two clicks above middle gets middle grey at 50 IRE (or 33 IRE for you C-log guys) 95% of the time... or close enough that I can tweak by eye.

I don't use it because it doesn't tell me WHAT AREA of the frame it is using to give me that exposure reading.

Zebras work much better, imo.

The "light meter" is only an averaging meter just like in dslr's that only gets you in the ballpark. Zebras and the waveform give much more specific information about exposure in certain areas. Personally, having used zebras for so many years it is just second nature depending on what I am shooting to know where the highlight values should fall in the objects in the frame. They can tell me where exposure is on a face or on highlights like clouds.

I'm just glad we aren't discussing the dam handle anymore.

I use a mixture of both zebras and the light metre and can easily get the exposure to my liking. Its so nice to have zebras back after years of missing them in DSLRs. Not to mention peaking! :)
